Considering how long sectional garage doors have been on the market worldwide it is surprising how many people are unaware of this type of garage door. Extremely popular and prevalent in America, Europe has followed the trend and now in the UK it is one of the fastest growing sectors of the garage door industry. And when you examine the numerous benefits and features associated it is easy to see why.
So what makes the sectional door so special?
Unlike up and over garage doors the sectional door rises vertically on tracks within the garage. This opening action completely eliminates swing-out which carries several benefits firstly the usable length of the driveway is maximised, allowing the parking of vehicles tight up against the door, particularly handy for households with more than one car. Secondly if the garage door opens directly onto a public footpath bylaws are not breached and the risk of injuring a member of public by opening the door blindly from the inside is eradicated. Thirdly when opening and closing the sectional door with an electric remote controlled operator it is far less likely to encounter hazards and objects that will interfere with the smooth operation.
The drive through height and width is increased quite
dramatically.
Because is usually fitted behind the garage opening
directly on to the brickwork, the whole of the width of the garage is
utilised. Drive through height advantages may vary slightly between
manufactures so we will look at the Hormann sectional garage door as an
example. Sectional garage doors, with standard gear, up to 10ft wide,
manually
fitted will leave a hang down of approximately 80mm. When operated by
electric garage door opener the hang down is reduced to approximately
30mm. On a double sectional garage door with standard gear, manually
fitted the hang down is around 50mm and when remotely controlled the
hang down is absolutely nil! Compare the sectional door to the
retractable garage door up to 9 wide that gives a hang down of 110mm
and 140mm on doors over 9 wide. The hang down on retractable garage
doors is not reduced when operated by an electric garage door opener.
Whilst a roller shutter garage door will give many of the above advantages it will invariably need more headroom than a sectional door.
What happens if needs to be fitted between the opening?
Obviously the maximum drive through heights and widths will
not be
achieved. Also the track legs will be visible so cover profiles would
be recommended to finish the appearance.
When might a sectional garage door not be suitable?
Rarely is the answer. If you have really minimal headroom inside your garage you may struggle to fit a sectional garage door although there are low headroom options. If the garage has any low rafters further back check that the tracks will fit. One other point - make sure that the tracks dont run across the opening of any pedestrian door into the garage for the sake of safety.

Hormann Sectional Doors
Generally Hormann
have an
excellent reputation for quality of
product
and an absolutely vast certainly the biggest in the UK - range of
styles, patterns, finishes, colours, operating gear, material etc the
list goes on. The Garador door is of the same quality but the
range is nowhere near as extensive. Carteck have an excellent product
and although the range is more limited the delivery periods tend to be
faster than the Hormann or Garador on certain sizes. The Wessex Vienna
is probably a more niche product manufactured in GRP. The Rundum
overhead sectional garage door is ideal for those looking for a
specialist timber garage door. Novoferm produce a very nifty sectional
