Toplight Centre Ribbed Horizontal Design
The Toplight Centre Ribbed Horizontal side hinged garage door features a very popular, wider horizontal panel arrangement, topped with a dedicated row of vertical windows. This design gives a clean, uncluttered visual appearance that suits both modern builds and older properties. The integrated glazing is perfect for bringing natural daylight into the garage, making it an excellent choice for those using the space as a workshop, gym, or utility room without wanting to leave the main doors wide open.
Available made to measure up to 3500mm wide, you can select a standard 50/50 split or opt for an asymmetric configuration to give you a standard pedestrian door size for everyday access. When choosing an asymmetric split, please make sure you allow for the fact that the maximum leaf width for the active door is 1524mm. The door is available in a wide array of surface textures and colours, allowing you to easily match your existing exterior finishes.
Exceptional Insulation and Thermal Performance
If you spend a lot of time in your garage or it is attached directly to your house, thermal performance is crucial. These doors are built using 40mm thick interlocking double skin steel panels with a rigid foam core. Unlike traditional single-skin steel doors, this thickness gives the door leaf immense rigidity, so it feels reassuringly solid to operate and will not rattle in the wind.
The complete doorset achieves an independently tested insulation U-value of 2.20 W/mK. This rating accounts for the entire door, including the panel joints and weather strips, not just the panel itself. To further minimise cold draughts, each door leaf is fitted with a circumferential weather strip, backed up by an additional three-sided weather strip on the frame. At the base, the standard 179mm wide stepped aluminium threshold features a built-in thermal break and a heavy-duty bulb weather strip for the doors to compress against, creating a highly effective barrier against the elements.
Heavy Duty Security Features
With the robust panel construction comes highly dependable security hardware. A major advantage of this door is the use of heavy-duty concealed hinges as standard. By moving the hinges to the inside of the frame, the exterior of the door not only looks much sleeker, but it also completely removes an obvious point of attack, making it incredibly difficult for anyone to lever the door open from the hinge side.
The primary locking system relies on a high-grade stainless steel lever handle paired with a BS EN1303 Cylinder Security Grade 2 euro profile cylinder. This lock is designed with anti-drill and anti-pick internals. It also includes a clever break-off system; if someone attempts to snap the cylinder, a sacrificial front section breaks away, leaving enough of the mechanism intact for you to still operate it with your key. The inactive leaf is held securely in place by adjustable flush bolts at the top and bottom, ensuring precise latching over time.
* For maximum peace of mind, especially if storing valuable tools or vehicles, an optional 3-point hook locking system is available. This locks the active leaf at the top, middle, and bottom, preventing the door from being prised apart.
Toplight Glazing Specifications
The Toplight windows are built to maintain the door's overall thermal and security benefits. Each window unit measures 370mm wide by 680mm high and uses a tough, scratch-resistant polymer double glazing. To ensure your privacy while still letting the light in, the exterior pane is finished in a frosted satin, while the interior pane is clear.
A natural lead grey mock leaded effect comes fitted as standard, giving a traditional nod, but plain, black, or white leading options are available on request. The surrounds to the windows feature a smooth finish matched to the door frame, blending the glazing and panels into a single cohesive design.
Factory Assembled Frame and Practical Details
Every doorset is delivered fully assembled with an engineered hollow section aluminium fixing sub frame already attached. Having the frame factory fitted ensures incredibly tight tolerances where the door closes, meaning fewer draughts and a much simpler installation process on site without the need to build a separate timber frame.
Inside the garage, the back of the door is exceptionally practical. The panels are completely flush, doing away with the exposed bracing bars that tend to gather dust and cobwebs. The interior is finished in a Grey White (RAL 9002) stucco texture, which acts as a great reflective surface to brighten up the room.
* A level floor is essential for the best results when fitting the frame and threshold to ensure the weather seals compress correctly. Top grade, spring dampened door stays are also fitted as standard to hold the door securely open on windy days, assuming the leaf is over 780mm wide.
CarTeck Toplight Options Guide
To help you create the perfect Toplight side hinged garage door for your home, we offer a comprehensive range of options and upgrades. This guide explains the choices available through our online ordering process, allowing you to configure a door that perfectly matches your property and practical needs.
Sizing Your Door
All CarTeck Toplight doors are made to measure as standard at no extra cost, up to 3500mm wide and 2500mm high. To generate your base price in our online shop, simply select the nearest 'up to' size from the width and height dropdown menus. If you decide to proceed to checkout, you will then be prompted to enter your exact required opening dimensions in the boxes provided.
* Always remember to allow for some fitting tolerance when taking your measurements. A level floor is essential for the best results when fitting the frame and threshold.
Colour and Finish Selection
With an extensive palette of finishes available, you can easily match your new garage door to your existing brickwork, window frames, or front door. The options include:
- Trend Colours: A selection of 19 popular architectural shades, including Anthracite Grey, Jet Black, and Steel Blue.
- Trend+ Colours: An extended range of 20 distinctive shades, such as Chartwell Green, Ruby Red, and Pigeon Blue.
- Wood Effect Finishes: Highly realistic laminates offering the visual appearance of timber without the ongoing maintenance (Golden Oak, Night Oak, Rosewood, and Winchester).
- Custom RAL: If you require a very specific shade not listed, we can colour-match to almost any RAL code. Please call or email us for a custom pricing quote.
The engineered hollow section aluminium outer fixing frame is automatically colour matched to your chosen panel finish as standard, ensuring a cohesive look right around the opening.
Coastal Paint Upgrade
If your property is located within one mile of the coast, we strongly advise selecting the Coastal paint upgrade. Salt air is highly aggressive, and standard finishes can corrode or discolour quickly in these environments. The Coastal upgrade provides enhanced protection against high salinity, ensuring your door maintains its finish and validating the manufacturer's warranty for coastal locations.
* Please contact us directly for an accurate price on the Coastal paint upgrade, as it varies depending on your chosen door specifications. You must also select a 316 Stainless Steel handle or the CarTeck Lever Handle option if choosing this upgrade.
External Surface Textures
The texture you choose for the outside face of the door panels significantly impacts the final aesthetic. Depending on your chosen colour or wood effect, you can select from up to four different textures:
- Smooth: A completely flat, sleek finish that works brilliantly on modern, contemporary properties.
- Woodgrain: A textured finish that mimics the subtle grain of sawn timber.
- Stucco: A lightly dimpled texture that is very practical and helps to mask minor scuffs.
- Micro-Profiled: A fine, corrugated texture that adds subtle detail to the door face.
Door Leaf Configuration
By default, these side hinged doors are supplied with a 50/50 split, meaning both leaves are the same width. However, if you regularly access your garage on foot, you can specify an asymmetrical split. This gives you a standard pedestrian door width for everyday use, with a larger secondary leaf that you only open when you need full vehicle access.
* If you require an asymmetrical split, please email or call us to order. Note that the maximum leaf width for the larger leaf on an asymmetrical setup is 1524mm.
Leading Leaf Choice
You can choose which door leaf opens first (the leading leaf). This active leaf houses the handle and locking cylinder. The secondary, inactive leaf remains secured by flush bolts at the top and bottom until you choose to open it. Selecting the correct leading leaf is usually determined by which side is most convenient for you to access from your driveway.
Threshold Options
A good threshold is crucial for stopping draughts, leaves, and rain from blowing under the door. You have a choice of two standard options:
- Standard 3-Part Ramped Threshold: At 179mm wide, this stepped aluminium threshold includes a robust bulb weather strip for the doors to compress against, creating an excellent seal. It features a built-in thermal break to reduce cold transfer and is supplied in three sections, allowing it to be extended beyond the frame legs for a neater floor finish.
- Optional 1-Part Ramped Threshold: A narrower 134mm wide stepped profile that also includes a seal and a thermal break.
* A simple, low-profile aluminium strip threshold (without a weather strip) is also available on request.
Security and Hardware Upgrades
As standard, your door comes with a high-quality pair of stainless steel lever handles, a single-point security lock, and a BS EN1303 Cylinder Security Grade 2 euro profile cylinder. This cylinder features anti-drill and anti-pick internals, plus a break-off system that allows you to still use your key even if the front section is snapped during an attempted break-in.
Optional 3-Point Hook Locking
For enhanced peace of mind, we offer a 3-point hook locking upgrade. This secures the active door leaf at the top, middle, and bottom using robust hook locks. These hooks provide an extra layer of security, making it incredibly difficult for potential intruders to prise the door leaves apart. This system operates similarly to a patio door, where you simply lift the handle to engage the top and bottom hooks.
* Top grade, spring dampened door stays are also fitted to securely hold the door open while you are in and out, provided the door leaves are over 780mm wide.
Toplight Glazing Styles
The Toplight design incorporates a row of vertical windows across the top of the door, letting natural light flood into the garage while maintaining your privacy. Each window unit is manufactured from scratch-resistant polymer double glazing. The exterior pane features a frosted satin finish, while the interior pane is clear.
You can choose how these windows are detailed to best suit your home:
- Natural Lead Grey Mock Leaded-Effect: Supplied as standard for a classic, traditional look.
- Plain Design: Available on request for a cleaner, more understated appearance.
- Black or White Leading: Also available on request to match specific exterior detailing on your property.
The window surrounds are finished smoothly and colour-matched to your main door panels, ensuring a cohesive and high-quality final appearance.
Door Construction and Finish
The Toplight Centre Ribbed side hinged doors are built using 40mm thick double skin steel panels with an insulated rigid foam core, held within a fully finished engineered aluminium sub frame. The inside face of these panels is completely flush, meaning there are no traditional bracing bars or surface-mounted lock gear to gather dust. This makes the interior far easier to wipe down and keep tidy. To help brighten the inside of your garage, all doors are finished internally in a practical Grey White (RAL 9002) stucco texture, which does a great job of reflecting the light.
You have a choice of surface textures for the outside face of the door, including Woodgrain, Smooth, Stucco or Micro-Profiled, depending on the specific colour or wood effect finish you select.
Toplight Glazing and Window Finish
A key feature of the Toplight design is the row of vertical windows across the top of the door, letting natural daylight into the garage without compromising your privacy. Each window unit measures 370mm wide by 680mm high and is manufactured from a scratch-resistant polymer double glazing. The exterior pane is finished in frosted satin, whilst the interior pane is left clear.
These windows come with a natural lead grey mock leaded effect as standard, but plain, black, or white leading options are available on request. The surrounds to the windows feature a smooth finish matched to the door frame, making sure the glazing, frame, and door panels all blend together nicely.
Scratch-resistant polymer double glazed windows featuring a frosted satin exterior and clear interior, available with either traditional leaded effect or plain designs to suit your property.
Extensive Selection of Finishes
You can specify these doors in a massive palette of finishes. This gives you the flexibility to coordinate perfectly with your existing windows, doors, and exterior brickwork, whether you want a solid paint colour or a natural timber look.
Wood Effect Finishes
These tough laminates offer the visual appearance of natural timber without the ongoing maintenance.
Trend Colours
Trend Satin Colours
To ensure a completely integrated appearance right around the opening, the outer aluminium fixing sub frame is always finished in a matching smooth finish for most standard Trend colours, at no extra cost.
Aluminium Fixing Sub Frame
Every doorset comes factory fitted with a hollow section aluminium fixing sub frame. Having the frame already attached ensures incredibly tight tolerances where the door hinges and closes, meaning fewer draughts and a much simpler installation process on site without the need for a separate timber frame. Because each doorset is made to measure, we can maximise the usable clear width and height of your specific opening.
* You can specify the doors with a standard 50/50 split, or an asymmetric split for easier pedestrian access, assuming of course you allow for the fact that the maximum leaf width for the large leaf is 1524mm.
3 Part Threshold with Bulb Weather Strip
A stepped 3-part aluminium threshold, 179mm wide, is supplied as standard across all these side hinged garage doors. This setup incorporates a bulb weather strip for the bottom of the door leaves to close firmly against, creating an improved barrier to dust, debris, and rain. The threshold also includes a built-in thermal break to help reduce cold bridging into the garage floor. Because the threshold is supplied in three separate sections, it can be extended beyond the frame legs for a neater floor finish.
Click here for further information on the threshold options.

Locking, Hardware and Security
Optional 3 Point Hook Locking
If you use your garage for storage and want an additional layer of security, an optional 3-point hook locking system is available. This locks the active door leaf at the top, middle, and bottom, providing much stronger resistance against forced entry and preventing the leaves from being prised apart.
Lock Cylinder Security
The standard Euro profile cylinder provides dependable security and peace of mind. The practical benefits include:
- Certified to BS EN1303 Cylinder Security Grade 2
- Anti-drill and anti-pick internal design
- 3 keys supplied as standard in the box
- Built-in break off system, meaning a sacrificial front section snaps away under attack but leaves enough cylinder in place for you to still operate the lock with your key

Handles and General Hardware
The high grade stainless steel handles and lock covers are tough enough for daily use while keeping a very attractive finish. The included hardware features:
- Dependable single point security lock
- Pair of stainless steel lever handles
- Internal thumb turn for convenient operation from the inside
- Adjustable flush bolts at the top and bottom of the inactive leaf for secure, precise latching
- Top grade, spring dampened door stays fitted to securely hold the door open while you are in and out (only supplied on door leaves over 780mm wide)
* Doors installed in coastal or high salinity environments must be fitted with a 316 Stainless Steel lever handle upgrade or the 3-point locking with CarTeck lever handle option to prevent corrosion.
Double Weather Strips and Mitred Corners
To really cut down on cold draughts entering your garage, there is a continuous weather strip right around the circumference of each door leaf, backed up by an additional three-sided weather strip on the frame itself. The frame profiles are mitre jointed at the corners, which leaves you with a very clean and precise final finish.
Concealed Hinges
These side hinged doors use heavy-duty concealed hinges as standard. Moving the hinges out of sight brings several practical advantages to your doors:
- A sleeker, more contemporary visual appearance from the outside
- An improved drive through width of up to 80mm between the frame compared to surface mounted hinges
- Quicker alignment and adjustment during installation, to help align the door leaves perfectly
- Improved security by removing an obvious point of attack, making it far harder to lever the door open from the hinge side
* A level floor is essential for the best results when fitting the frame and threshold.
See the Installation tab for a video showing how to adjust a concealed hinge.

Installation Guidance – Made to Measure as Standard
Every CarTeck 40mm insulated side hinged garage door is made to measure as standard. This means the doorset is manufactured to your exact brickwork opening sizes (allowing for the correct fitting tolerances), so you are not trying to "make do" with a standard size. You benefit from maximum clear opening width and height, tighter seals and a far neater finished appearance.
1. Measuring Before You Order
Before ordering, carefully measure the structural brickwork opening width and height in at least three places (top, middle, bottom for width; left, centre, right for height). Use the smallest measurements and check that the reveals and lintel are reasonably plumb and level. These clear opening sizes are what you provide for your made to measure doorset – the factory will calculate the finished frame sizes and tolerances from these figures.
2. Delivered as a Complete Doorset (Up to 3188mm)
For openings up to 3188mm wide, CarTeck side hinged doors are supplied as a fully assembled doorset. The aluminium fixing frame, door leaves, hinges, locks, seals and glazing are all factory fitted and pre-aligned. This eliminates the need to hang door leaves separately on site. Once unpacked, the frame and doors are lifted into the opening as one unit, making installation faster, cleaner and more predictable.
* Important Note for Oversized Doors: Due to the sheer physical weight and handling practicalities of very large panels, any doors ordered over 3188mm wide will not be delivered pre assembled. The aluminium outer frame and the door leaves will be delivered as loose components that require assembly and hanging on site. Additionally, these oversized doors will be supplied with heavy duty traditional surface mounted hinges to safely support the extra weight, rather than the standard concealed hinges.
3. Fitting the Aluminium Sub Frame
With the old garage door and frame removed and the opening cleaned back to sound masonry, the new aluminium frame is positioned into the reveal. For pre-assembled units, use packers and a spirit level to ensure the whole frame is perfectly plumb, level and square, then drill and fix through the pre-designated fixing points into the brickwork. Check the operation of both leaves as you go and make minor hinge or latch adjustments if required. For oversized loose-component doors, you will need to perfectly plumb and fix the frame first before carefully hanging the heavy door leaves.
4. Threshold & Final Sealing
The supplied 3-part threshold is then positioned and fixed in line with the frame legs, creating a continuous base for the bulb seal and improving weather protection at floor level. Because it is in three pieces, you can extend it slightly beyond the frame legs for a neat transition to adjacent paving or doorways. Finally, any small gaps between frame and brickwork are neatly sealed with a suitable external grade sealant or trim.
5. Post-Installation Checks
Once installed, check that:
- Both leaves open and close freely without fouling the floor or reveals.
- The locks engage smoothly and the compression seals make consistent contact all round.
- The stays hold the doors open securely at the desired angle.
Because these doors are made to measure, a competent installer or experienced DIYer can achieve an excellent, professional result with far less time and adjustment than a traditional, site-built timber door and frame.

Measuring for your CarTeck 40mm Luxe Toplight side hinged garage door is a straightforward process. These fully insulated doors are completely made to measure and supplied factory assembled with their sub fixing frame and hardware already fitted, ensuring a fast and simple installation. The entire unit is designed to be installed directly in between your structural garage opening.
Step 1: Measure the Structural Opening Width
Take the width measurement from brickwork to brickwork inside the structural opening.
- Measure the width in three distinct places: at the top, the middle, and the bottom of the opening.
- Record the smallest of these three dimensions. This becomes your definitive structural opening width.
Step 2: Measure the Structural Opening Height
Take the height measurement from the floor directly to the underside of the lintel.
- Measure the height in three places: on the left, in the middle, and on the right side of the opening.
- Record the smallest of these three dimensions to determine your definitive structural opening height.
Step 3: Calculate Your Ordering Size
Because the door and its pre-fitted frame sit inside the opening, you must allow for a fitting tolerance. The manufacturer recommends a minimum tolerance of 10mm all around to ensure the frame fits comfortably without being forced.
- Ordering Width: Deduct 20mm from your smallest structural opening width, which allows for a 10mm gap on both the left and right sides.
- Ordering Height: Deduct 10mm from your smallest structural opening height to allow a gap at the top.
The resulting dimensions are your Overall Frame Size, which is the exact measurement you will use when placing your order.
Step 4: Check Floor Levels and Squareness
The garage floor level is a critical factor because standard CarTeck side-hinged doors open outwards.
- Use a spirit level to check that the driveway is completely flat or falls away from the garage opening. Ensure the ground does not rise up and obstruct the outward swing of the door leaves.
- The door features a 3-part stepped aluminium threshold as standard, which requires a sound, level surface across the full width of the opening to sit correctly and provide an effective weather seal.
- Check how square and true your brickwork is. If the opening is visibly out of square or the stonework is particularly rough, you may need to increase your fitting tolerances (deducting more than 10mm) to ensure the pre-squared frame will fit within the space.
Please allow for any tolerances you require in the ordering dimensions and the doors will be manufactured to the exact dimensions specified.
