GDO Icon Medium Vertical Side Hinged Steel Garage Door
Medium vertical ribbed design
The Medium Ribbed vertical design works in either a 50/50 or 1/3rd and 2/3rd split arrangement, making it a very popular choice for side hinged garage doors in all available sizes and colours.
When design is a sensitive issue, such as on listed properties or in designated areas with planning restrictions on appearance and colour, vertical ribbed doors will often satisfy all parties involved.
The medium and standard ribbed doors are deliberately simple and inoffensive in their design, so the door colour usually becomes the more important decision to make.
Icon range construction and performance
The GDO Icon range of steel side hinged doors offers a higher specification than the Classic range, using reinforced internal door panel bracing to create a more stable and secure overall construction.
These are single skin, uninsulated steel door leaves, but they carry many of the same enhanced features as the insulated models, including rubber seals on the door leaves and the outer steel sub frame.
This combination produces one of the strongest and most stable single skin steel side hinged garage doors currently available on the UK market.
Made to measure as standard
Sizing and frame details
Made to measure sizes are supplied as standard at no extra cost; simply select the overall width and overall height, including the factory-fitted steel sub fixing frame, which is finished in the same colour as the chosen door panel.
Sizes are available up to 2750 mm wide and 2350 mm high, covering the vast majority of single and small double garage openings.
Key structural features
- Concealed shoot bolts on the slave leaf, locking securely at both the top and bottom.
- 3-dimensional hinges as standard, allowing maximum adjustment in all directions for precise on-site alignment.
- Steel bracing on the rear face of the door panels, creating a more rigid and durable final door leaf.
- Outward-swinging operation supplied as standard, with inward opening available on request at additional cost.
Hardware, locking and operation
The more robust outer panel construction is matched by equally robust handle and locking hardware, using a latch and deadlock system as standard for secure everyday use.
An adjustable keep allows precise latching, while the internal thumb turn provides effortless daily locking and unlocking from inside the garage.
A black lever handle set and black 3D external hinges are supplied as standard to complement the door design and colour options.
Weather protection and door control options
Optional aluminium threshold
An optional 15 mm aluminium threshold can be specified where you want to optimise overall weather resistance at the bottom of the opening.
This threshold requires a level floor to perform at its best and, like all thresholds for side hinged doors, cannot create a fully waterproof seal but will help reduce dust, debris and rainwater ingress.
Door stays
Optional door stays are available and are particularly worth considering on 50/50 split doors that are opened frequently or where the door is more exposed to wind.
Matching pedestrian doors
GDO also offers matching pedestrian access doors built to the same Icon specification, providing a consistent look and feel around the property.
These side doors are available in widths up to 1320 mm wide and 2340 mm high and feature the same lever handle and deadlock arrangement as the main garage doors.
Options & Upgrades
Door leaf configuration
Choose how the two door leaves are split to suit everyday access and the way you use the garage.

Pre-assembled doorset
These doors are supplied as a complete pre-assembled doorset, with both door leaves factory fitted into the steel sub fixing frame, so there is no on-site hanging of individual leaves required.
The frame and leaves are delivered as one unit, ready to be positioned into the prepared structural opening, fixed securely and then finely adjusted for the correct clearances and sealing.
Lifting and handling
Due to the size and weight of a fully assembled doorset, a minimum of two people is strongly recommended for safe lifting, positioning and temporary support during installation.
Care should be taken to protect the finished surfaces of the frame and door leaves when moving the doorset into place, using suitable packing or edge protection where necessary.
Site preparation and opening requirements
A level, solid and even floor is essential for the best results, ensuring the door leaves sit correctly, close evenly and, where specified, allow any threshold to perform effectively.
A square and plumb structural opening will make installation quicker and easier, but the frame and hinges provide adjustment in all directions to compensate for minor irregularities in the aperture.
Fixing and adjustment
Once the doorset has been offered into the opening, it should be temporarily wedged or braced, checked for level, plumb and squareness, and then fixed through the steel sub frame into suitable surrounding structure.
After fixing, the 3D adjustable hinges and frame fixings allow you to fine-tune the gaps around each leaf, optimise the latching and locking action, and ensure that the seals are in consistent contact all round.
Final checks and sealing
On completion, check that both leaves open and close freely without binding, that the latch, deadlock and shoot bolts engage smoothly, and that the doors hold firmly against the frame seals when closed.
Any required perimeter sealing between the outside of the steel frame and the surrounding structure should be completed using suitable sealants or trims, in line with the fitting instructions and site conditions.
2-year product guarantee
This door is covered by a standard 2-year product guarantee, which applies to all parts and the door panel provided the product serial number remains readable, intact and in place.
Factory-applied paint finishes on steel doors supplied in standard colours are also covered for 2 years under this guarantee; special or non-standard colours are excluded from this paint finish cover.
Hinges, locking and operating limits
The product carries a 2-year warranty on the hinges and locking system under normal use, where normal use is defined as no more than 5 open/close operations per day.
For long-term reliability, it is recommended that the door is inspected and serviced annually by a competent engineer from the garage door industry.
Parts replacement and service work
Where parts are replaced either by an engineer or supplied on a supply-only basis under warranty, those replacement parts are covered for 6 months or for the remainder of the original warranty period, whichever is longer.
If any warranty work is carried out on the product, the overall product guarantee does not extend beyond the original anniversary of the installation or supply date.

Ordering size = overall size
Please refer to the measuring drawing for this product: the ordering width and ordering height are the exact overall dimensions of the complete doorset, including the factory-fitted steel outer sub frame.
When you enter your sizes online, you are entering the overall frame size (width and height), not the opening size and not the size of the door leaves only.
Allowing fitting tolerance
Always remember to allow some fitting tolerance between the steel frame and the structural opening. In an ideal aperture we recommend allowing around 10 mm clearance all round.
In practice, this usually means measuring the structural opening width and height in several places, taking the smallest width and smallest height, and then deducting approximately 10 mm from each to give your ordering width and ordering height.
Real-world openings are often not perfectly level or square, so make sure you allow enough tolerance to cope with any out-of-level floors, out-of-plumb reveals or variations across the opening.
Minimum and maximum ordering sizes
All sizes below are ordering sizes (overall width x overall height including the steel outer frame). The same minimum and maximum heights apply to both 50/50 and 1/3–2/3 split options.

Helpful measuring tips
- Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the opening, and the height on both sides; always use the smallest readings as your basis.
- Check the floor level across the opening, as any fall or step may reduce the usable height on one side.
- Confirm there is enough clear space for the doors to swing open fully on the chosen side, taking into account paths, walls, downpipes and other obstructions.
