GDO ROLL77 Electric Key and Genesis Button Control

Simple, Hard Wired Control Inside and Out

The GDO ROLL77 Electric Key and Genesis Button Control is a UK manufactured, insulated aluminium roller garage door designed for people who want simple, hard wired controls rather than remote handsets. It combines robust 77mm double skinned slats and a foam filled core with an easy to use Genesis control panel inside the garage and a secure key switch outside, so you can operate the door confidently whether you are in the garage or arriving on foot from the driveway.

Ideal for Integral and Foot-Access Garages

Instead of fobs and batteries, you have clear, intuitive buttons and a key. Press once on the internal panel to open the door fully, then press and hold to close so you can stop it instantly if anything is in the way. From outside, you unlock and turn the key to open or close while watching the door move, making this an ideal solution where the garage is integral to the house or used mainly as a store, utility area or workshop rather than a daily drive-in space.

Made to Measure with Premium Finishes

Every GDO ROLL77 is made to measure, manufactured to the exact millimetre up to 5200mm wide and 2900mm high, so it fits neatly and helps to maximise weather sealing and security. The insulated curtain is available in 18 premium powder coated colours, with matching or contrasting hoods and guides if you choose to add a half or full hood for extra weather protection or to cloak the roll.

Reliable, Practical and Easy to Live With

Behind the clean appearance sits a straightforward, reliable mechanism with a built in internal manual override, so you can always wind the door open or closed in a power cut. If the door is your only access, you can also add an external low level manual release for complete peace of mind. The overall result is an insulated roller garage door that is easy to use, easy to install and easy to live with, without the complexity of full remote control systems.

How to Order Your Made to Measure Door

Ordering your GDO ROLL 77 in a premium colour is straightforward. First, measure your garage opening and select the nearest “up to” size from the drop down menu. This selects the correct price band.

Then enter your exact required width and height in the boxes provided. Your door will be manufactured to your precise measurements.

  • External key switch: A secure wall mounted key switch is included as standard, providing convenient access from outside without remote control handsets.
  • Internal manual override: A winding handle and internal manual override point are included as standard for use in the event of a power cut.

Choose the options that best suit your garage, installation position and preferred finish.

  • Guide colours: Choose guides in the same premium colour as the curtain or select a contrasting colour to frame the opening.
  • Motor side: Specify which side the motor, manual override and power cable should be positioned when viewed from inside the garage, based on your preferred power supply and access arrangement.

Construction and Insulation

77mm insulated aluminium slat profile for the GDO ROLL 77 roller garage door

The GDO ROLL 77 is manufactured using high quality 77mm deep, double skinned aluminium slats with an insulated foam filled core. Each door is made to measure and manufactured to your exact width and height requirements for a precise fit.

This electrically operated roller garage door provides a practical, space saving solution for a wide range of single and double garages.

Genesis Control Panel and External Key Switch

This GDO ROLL 77 model uses the Genesis hard wired control system instead of remote control handsets.

Inside the garage, the compact wall mounted Genesis control panel provides simple push button operation. Press once to open the door fully. To close the door, press and hold the button while the door travels down, releasing it at any point to stop movement.

An external wall mounted key switch is supplied as standard, allowing access from outside without a remote handset. Turn the key once to open the door fully. Turn and hold the key to close the door while watching it move.

This provides straightforward and reliable operation from both inside and outside the garage, without wireless remote controls.

Manual Override and Safety

An internal manual override is supplied as standard for use in the event of a power cut. The supplied winding handle hooks onto the eye of the motor drive, allowing the door to be opened or closed manually.

Specify whether the motor, manual override and power cable are positioned on the left or right side when viewed from inside the garage, according to your power supply and access requirements.

The Genesis system uses hold to run control for closing. You must keep the button or key switch held while the door is closing, allowing you to stop it immediately if you see an obstruction.

Roll, Endplates and Headroom

The curtain rolls around a durable steel barrel, supported by steel endplates on each side. Allow approximately 300mm above the guide height for the curtain roll and endplates.

When the door is fully open, allow up to 110mm for the bottom slat to hang down within the guides. This should be considered where maximum drive through height is important for a vehicle, roof box or stored equipment.

Hood Cover Options

As standard, the GDO ROLL 77 is supplied without a hood cover, leaving the curtain roll and barrel visible when the door is open. Choose an optional hood cover for a more finished appearance and additional protection for the roll and operating components.

GDO ROLL 77 half hood and full hood cover options

Half Hood Cover

A half hood provides a neat aluminium fascia and top cover for the curtain roll. It is a popular choice where the roll is visible from the front of the garage, helping to create a cleaner and more finished appearance.

Full Hood Cover

A full hood encloses the curtain roll and barrel, apart from the opening where the curtain enters the side guides. It is strongly recommended for external installations and exposed locations, where it helps protect the roll and operating components from weather, debris and accidental contact.

Guides, Sizes and Clear Openings

The aluminium side guides are 34mm deep and are supplied in one of two widths, depending on the overall door width. Your ordering size is stated as Over Guide Width (OGW) x Guide Height (GH).

Over Guide Width is the total width of the curtain and both side guides combined. Always allow for the guides, endplates and any selected hood cover when checking your available installation space.

Door ordering width Guide width Clear opening width Clear opening height
Up to 3000mm 75mm each side OGW less 150mm GH less 110mm
Over 3000mm 90mm each side OGW less 180mm GH less 110mm

The maximum overall width, including guides, is 5200mm. The maximum guide height is 2900mm. At the maximum guide height, allow approximately 300mm above the guides for the curtain roll and endplates, creating an overall height of around 3200mm. The maximum door width at this height is 4600mm.

Fitting Positions

Between the Opening

The door is fitted within the structural opening. This can provide a neat recessed finish, but the side guides reduce the available clear opening width and the bottom slat hang down reduces the available clear opening height.

Behind the Opening

The door is fitted to the wall face behind the structural opening. This is the most popular installation position because it provides the maximum available clear opening width and height.

Behind opening fitting can

Simple, Hard Wired Installation

The GDO ROLL77 Electric Key and Genesis Button Control has been designed to be very straightforward to install. The curtain and barrel are supplied pre-assembled, the guides are pre-formed and the Genesis control panel with external key switch uses simple hard wired connections. There is no remote handset programming, making this system ideal for competent DIY installers or any local builder or electrician.

Core Installation Steps

  • Prepare the opening: Check the structural opening is sound and square, confirm your ordered Over Guide Width (OGW) and guide height match the intended fitting position (behind or inbetween the opening).
  • Fix the guides: Position the side guides plumb and level, then securely fix them to the wall or frame in accordance with the fitting instructions.
  • Mount the barrel and curtain: Lift the pre-assembled barrel and curtain into place on the steel endplates, allowing around 300mm headroom for the roll and any hood cover, then fix the endplates firmly to the structure.
  • Connect the power: Plug the factory-fitted mains lead into a suitable 13 amp, three pin, switched socket. Any new socket or fixed wiring must be installed by a qualified electrician.
  • Fit the Genesis control panel: Mount the internal Genesis control unit inside the garage at a convenient height, where you have clear sight of the door while operating the buttons.
  • Test operation: Check the door opens fully with a single press of the open button and closes smoothly using the hold-to-run close command, confirming you can stop the door at any point.

Installing and Using the External Key Switch

The external key switch is supplied as standard with this model and gives you secure access from outside the garage. It is housed in a robust steel or alloy body and connects back to the Genesis control panel using a low voltage cable.

  • Positioning: Mount the key switch on the outside wall of the garage, usually near the opening at a comfortable operating height, but where it is not easily reached by children.
  • Cabling: Run the supplied control cable from the key switch position back to the Genesis control panel inside, keeping it secure and away from any moving parts of the door. Follow the wiring terminals shown in the Genesis instructions for the external key switch connections.
  • Operation: To open the door from outside, insert the key and turn to send an impulse command; the door will open fully. To close, turn and hold the key so you can watch the door while it closes, releasing it immediately if you see any obstruction in the opening.
  • Security: The key switch uses dedicated security keys, so only authorised users can operate the door externally. When the key is removed, the switch returns to a neutral position and the door cannot be moved from outside.

Manual Override and External Release

Every GDO ROLL77 is supplied with an internal manual override as standard. In a power cut, you simply insert the winding handle onto the internal override point and manually wind the door up or down from inside the garage.

If the roller door is your only way into the garage and there is no separate pedestrian door, you should also specify an external low level manual release. This allows you to operate the manual override from outside if there is no mains power and you cannot enter the garage to use the internal handle.

Always follow the full GDO ROLL77 fitting and wiring instructions supplied with your door, and consult a qualified electrician for any permanent electrical work or if you are unsure about the power supply and control wiring.
