Garador Carlton Steel Side Hinged Garage Door, Purpose Made
This is Garador's classic Carlton design, featuring narrow vertical ribs running top to bottom across both door leaves, built to the exact overall width and height your garage opening requires. Ordering a purpose made door is by far the best route when your brickwork has been built to an awkward or non standard size, when you are replacing old handmade timber doors on a period property, or when fitting the nearest standard size would leave wide timber packers and plastic trims showing down both sides.
The vertical ribbed pattern is also one of the most forgiving and best looking designs for a made to measure garage door. Because the ribs are evenly spaced across the face and there are no pressed boxes or mouldings to centre, the door looks balanced and Properly proportioned at any custom width within the manufacturing range.
Ideal for How UK Homeowners Use Their Garages Today
With most UK garages now used for accessible storage, workshops, utility appliances, bicycles, or home gyms rather than parking a car, outward opening side hinged doors are much more practical for everyday life than a heavy lifting door:
- Easy walk in access: Simply turn the lever handle and open the leading leaf like a normal external door to step inside without exposing the entire garage to the street or bad weather.
- 100% clear ceiling and wall space inside: Because both leaves swing outwards and there are no internal tracks, springs, or lifting gear running back into the garage, your full internal ceiling height and side walls stay completely free for shelving, lighting, or overhead storage.
- Maximum clear opening width: Having the frame built to your exact brickwork opening rather than packing down to a smaller standard size preserves every millimetre of walk through width for bikes, wheelbarrows, and appliances.
- Controlled, reliable operation: Fitted with hydraulic gas pistons and mechanical metal door stays on both leaves to dampen the swing and hold the doors safely open in breezy weather.
Made to Fit Your Exact Opening
The purpose made Carlton covers the widest custom size range of any Garador steel side hinged model, manufactured to the millimetre from 1930mm to 2539mm wide and from 1891mm to 2196mm high overall (including the steel frame). That includes the narrower and lower openings often found on older UK single garages that panelled steel designs simply cannot be made to fit.
- Built to your exact overall dimensions: Door leaves and steel frame manufactured together for a clean brick to brick fit.
- Supplied factory framed and prehung: Arrives fully assembled in its frame with hinges, locks, and handles already fitted for fast, accurate on site installation.
- Dependable two point shoot bolt locking: Top and bottom shoot bolts secure the fixed leaf, while the leading leaf locks tightly against it via a Euro cylinder lock and lever handle.
- Concealed hinges and all round weather seals: Hinges are hidden inside the frame profile with no exposed knuckles outside, paired with rubber frame seals and a 20mm aluminium floor threshold.
- Gas pistons and mechanical door stays: Fitted to both leaves as standard for smooth closing and secure hold open control.
- 19 factory powder coated colours: Finished in Traffic White (RAL 9016) inside and out as standard, with 18 optional colours available at extra cost.
Robust Steel Construction
The narrow ribbed door panels are pressed from high grade galvanised steel, fixed into a rigid welded steel box section chassis, and finished with a durable factory powder coat. Every door arrives prehung in its own matching steel box frame, which features 75mm wide uprights and a 60mm high head section. On site, installation is simply a matter of positioning, levelling, and fixing the complete steel frame assembly directly between your brickwork.
Choosing Your Ordering Size and Door Split
Purpose made doors are ordered by the overall width and height of the door including the steel frame. Simply measure your structural opening brick to brick, deduct a small fitting tolerance so the frame can be plumbed and packed square, and the figures you are left with are your exact ordering dimensions. The Measure tab on this page walks you through this step by step.
The Carlton comes with an equal 50/50 split as standard. On overall frame widths up to 2234mm, you can also specify a 1/3 and 2/3 split at the exact same price, giving you a convenient 800mm wide leading leaf for everyday pedestrian access. Please call or email us when ordering if you would like the 1/3 and 2/3 split.
* Money saving tip: If your required overall frame dimensions match one of the 18 standard Carlton sizes closely enough to fit without wide packers, our Standard Size Garador Carlton listing will usually work out more cost effective.
Garador Purpose Made Steel Side Hinged Door Options
These options apply to every made to measure Garador steel side hinged door. The panel designs, colours, and hardware are identical to the standard size doors, with the only differences being the custom sizing and the width limits on asymmetric splits.
Colour
Every door is powder coated in Traffic White (RAL 9016) as standard on both the inside and outside faces, with the steel frame finished to match. A further 18 factory powder coated colours are available at extra cost:
- Black RAL 9005
- Anthracite Grey RAL 7016
- Slate Grey RAL 7015

Handles
- Black lever handle outside and inside: Included as standard for easy everyday opening from either side.
- Black plastic knob outside with lever inside: The fixed outside knob means the door can only be opened from the outside using the key, so it cannot be left accidentally unlocked.
- Anodised aluminium lever handles in White: Matching lever handles inside and out.
- Anodised aluminium lever handles in Chrome effect: Smart metallic lever handles inside and out.
On the inside, a central flip up handle on the fixed leaf releases both the top and bottom shoot bolts in one go, saving you reaching up to the top frame or bending down to the floor.
Leading Leaf
The leading leaf is the door you open first and the one fitted with the outside handle. The right hand leaf leads as standard when viewed from outside. A left hand leading leaf is available at extra cost if a wall, fence, or driveway layout makes the right hand side awkward to open.
Door Split
Purpose made steel doors are supplied with an equal 50/50 split as standard. A 1/3 and 2/3 split is available at the same price, depending on the door design and overall width:
- Carlton: 1/3 and 2/3 split available on any overall width up to 2234mm
- Georgian, Beaumont, Cathedral, and Beaumont with Windows: 1/3 and 2/3 split available at 2234mm overall width only
- Ascot and Windsor: 50/50 split only
On a 1/3 and 2/3 door, the smaller leaf is always 800mm wide and always acts as the leading leaf. On the panelled designs, the pressings are set out in three columns with wider spacing. Please call or email us if you would like to order a 1/3 and 2/3 split.
Windows (Beaumont with Windows Only)
- Window style: Standard, Cross, or Diamond
- Glazing: Clear or stippled
- Window frames: White or brown as standard, or colour matched to the door at extra cost
Colour matched window frames are not available in Burgundy Brown or Golden Brown. On coloured doors ordered without the colour match option, standard white window frames can be painted on site.
Use
Suitable for domestic garages and lightweight commercial use.
Garador Purpose Made Steel Side Hinged Specification
Door Construction
Single skin galvanised steel door panels built around a rigid welded steel box section chassis, powder coated in Traffic White (RAL 9016) inside and out as standard.
Factory Framed
Each door is built to your exact overall size and prehung in its own steel box frame at the factory, finished to match the door colour. The frame uprights are 75mm wide, the head is 60mm high, and the frame is 75mm deep. These frame dimensions are included in your overall ordering size. The right hand leaf leads as standard when viewed from outside.
Concealed Hinges
Heavy duty hinges are concealed neatly within the steel frame, with no hinge knuckles standing proud of the exterior door face.
Two Point Locking
Internal shoot bolts secure the fixed leaf at the top and bottom of the frame, and the leading leaf locks tightly against it via a Euro cylinder lock and lever handle. The overlapping centre stile helps prevent forced entry to the locking mechanism.
Door Stays and Gas Pistons
Solid metal door stays with a pull cord release hold the leaves securely open, paired with hydraulic gas pistons on each leaf for a smooth, controlled close.
Weather Seals and Threshold
Rubber weather seals are built into the steel frame along the door stop and leading leaf, sealing around three sides of the opening. A 20mm high aluminium floor threshold is supplied as standard for the base.
Handles
A black lever handle is fitted on the right hand side as standard (viewed from outside), paired with a central flip up handle on the inside of the fixed leaf to release the top and bottom shoot bolts in one movement.

Installing Your Purpose Made Garador Steel Side Hinged Door
Your purpose made door arrives fully assembled and hung in its steel frame, built to the overall size you ordered. The hinges, handle, locking, stays and gas pistons are all fitted at the factory, so on site it's a case of fixing the frame into the opening. It's a job a competent DIYer can manage with a helper, or a local fitter can do it for you.
Installation instructions are supplied with every door.
Before You Fit
- Re measure the opening before fitting day and check it against your door size. The frame should go in with the fitting tolerance you allowed when ordering, around 10mm on the width and 5mm on the height
- A level, finished floor is essential, as the bottom shoot bolt drops into the floor to lock the fixed leaf
- The doors open outwards, so make sure there's clear, level ground in front of the garage for both leaves to open fully
- The frame is designed to fit between the brickwork. Fitting behind the reveals isn't recommended
- Check the brickwork either side can take fixings, especially on older properties where purpose made doors are most common
During Fitting
Fix the frame plumb and square, checking the diagonals. On older openings that aren't quite true, pack behind the frame at the fixing points rather than forcing it to follow the brickwork. A twisted frame stops the leaves meeting evenly and the seals closing properly.
Looking After Your Door
The door is factory finished and doesn't need painting. Wash it down with warm soapy water now and again, and clean off salt, bird droppings or anything corrosive promptly. Touch up any scratches straight away to stop corrosion. Lightly lubricate the hinges, lock and shoot bolts once or twice a year, using graphite powder rather than oil on the lock cylinder.
Garador Steel Side Hinged Door Warranty
Garador cover the safe and reliable function of their steel side hinged garage doors for 10 years from the date of purchase. A 5 year warranty applies to the hinges. Replacement parts are covered for 6 months, or to the end of the original warranty period, whichever is longer.
What's Covered
During the warranty period Garador will put right any defect that can be shown to be caused by a material or manufacturing fault. At their discretion they'll replace the faulty part, repair it or offer a reduction in price. The costs of removal, refitting and carriage aren't covered, and any replaced parts become the property of Garador Ltd.
Requirements
Warranty claims only apply in the country where the door was bought, the door must have been bought through Garador's authorised distribution, and the warranty only covers the door itself. You'll need the completed warranty card and your dated proof of purchase to make a claim.
What Isn't Covered
- Normal wear and tear
- Incorrect installation
- Lack of care and maintenance
- Incorrect use, at first or later on
- Deliberate or careless damage
- Fire, water, salts, alkaline solutions, acids and abnormal environmental conditions
- Damage in transport or fitting
- Priming and other surface treatments, including treatments applied incorrectly or too late
- Repairs by unqualified persons
- Use of non Garador parts without the manufacturer's approval
- Removal or defacing of the product number
Looking After the Finish
Minor scratches and marks aren't covered and should be touched up straight away to prevent corrosion. Touching up minor surface damage with a touch up spray or paint stick won't affect your warranty. Corrosive substances like salt should be washed off promptly.
Making a Claim
If you need to make a claim, please contact us with your name, address and phone number, your original invoice, the door type and product number, and a description of the problem. Garador may need to inspect the door in place. If the claim turns out not to be covered, the cost of the inspection visit may be charged.

Measuring for a Purpose Made Garador Steel Side Hinged Door
Purpose made doors are ordered by the overall width and overall height of the door including its steel frame, which comes factory fitted. The frame uprights are 75mm wide and the head is 60mm high.
Size Range by Design
| Model | Purpose made overall size range W x H |
|---|---|
| Carlton | 1930mm to 2539mm wide x 1891mm to 2196mm high |
| Ascot | 2234mm to 2539mm wide x 1991mm to 2196mm high |
| Georgian | 2234mm to 2539mm wide x 1991mm to 2196mm high |
| Beaumont | 2234mm to 2539mm wide x 1991mm to 2196mm high |
| Cathedral | 2234mm to 2539mm wide x 1991mm to 2196mm high |
| Beaumont with Windows | 2234mm to 2539mm wide x 1991mm to 2196mm high |
How to Work Out Your Ordering Size
- Measure the opening brick to brick across the width, at the top, middle and bottom. Use the smallest figure.
- Measure from the finished floor to the underside of the lintel, on both sides and in the middle. Use the smallest figure.
- Take at least 10mm off the width and 5mm off the height. These are total allowances, not per side. If the opening is out of square or the brickwork is uneven, allow a little more.
- The figures you're left with are your overall ordering width and height.
No fitting tolerance is added at the factory, so the door will be made to exactly the size you give us.
Choosing Your Size Online
Choose the width and height options your ordering size falls into, then enter your exact overall width and height when prompted.
| Width option | Covers overall widths |
|---|---|
| Up to 2234mm (Carlton only) | 1930mm to 2234mm |
| Up to 2384mm | 2235mm to 2384mm (from 2234mm on Ascot, Georgian, Beaumont, Cathedral and Beaumont with Windows) |
| Up to 2539mm | 2385mm to 2539mm |
| Height option | Covers overall heights |
|---|---|
| Up to 1990mm (Carlton only) | 1891mm to 1990mm |
| Up to 2041mm | 1991mm to 2041mm (Carlton from 1891mm on widths up to 2234mm) |
| Up to 2196mm | 2042mm to 2196mm |
Worked Example
Your brick to brick opening is 2300mm wide and 2150mm high. Take off the tolerance and your overall ordering size is 2290mm x 2145mm. Choose the up to 2384mm width option and the up to 2196mm height option, then enter 2290mm x 2145mm as your exact size.
Clear Opening Inside the Frame
The clear opening inside the frame is 150mm narrower and 60mm lower than your overall size. On a 2290mm x 2145mm door that's 2140mm wide x 2085mm high. With the leaves open, their thickness takes a little more off the usable width.
* If your ordering size matches one of the standard sizes exactly, for example 2234mm x 2041mm, check the standard size listing as it will usually work out cheaper.
* If you can't find the size you need in the drop down menus, please call or email us.
