Medium vertical ribbed design
The Medium Ribbed vertical design works in either a 50/50 or 1/3rd and 2/3rd split arrangement, making it a very popular choice for side hinged garage doors in all available sizes and colours.
When design is a sensitive issue, such as on listed properties or in designated areas with planning restrictions on appearance and colour, vertical ribbed doors will often satisfy all parties involved.
The medium and standard ribbed doors are deliberately simple and inoffensive in their design, so the door colour usually becomes the more important decision to make.
Icon range construction and performance
The GDO Icon range of steel side hinged doors offers a higher specification than the Classic range, using reinforced internal door panel bracing to create a more stable and secure overall construction.
These are single skin, uninsulated steel door leaves, but they carry many of the same enhanced features as the insulated models. This includes double rubber seals on the door leaves and the outer aluminium fixing frame, alongside an integrated gasket between the leaf and panel.
This combination produces one of the strongest and most stable single skin steel side hinged garage doors currently available on the UK market.
Made to measure as standard
Sizing and frame details
Made to measure sizes are supplied as standard at no extra cost; simply select the overall width and overall height, including the factory fitted aluminium sub fixing frame, which is finished in the same colour as the chosen door panel.
Sizes are available up to 2750 mm wide and 2350 mm high, covering the vast majority of single and small double garage openings.
Key structural features
• Concealed shoot bolts on the slave leaf, locking securely at both the top and bottom.
• 3 dimensional hinges as standard, allowing maximum adjustment in all directions for precise on site alignment.
• Steel bracing on the rear face of the door panels, creating a more rigid and durable final door leaf.
• Outward swinging operation supplied as standard, with inward opening available on request at additional cost.
Hardware, locking and operation
The more robust outer panel construction is matched by equally robust handle and locking hardware, using a latch and deadlock system as standard for secure everyday use.
An adjustable keep allows precise latching, while the internal thumb turn provides effortless daily locking and unlocking from inside the garage.
A black lever handle set and black 3D external hinges are supplied as standard to complement the door design and colour options.
Weather protection and door control options
Optional aluminium threshold
An optional 15 mm aluminium threshold can be specified where you want to optimise overall weather resistance at the bottom of the opening.
This threshold requires a level floor to perform at its best and, like all thresholds for side hinged doors, cannot create a fully waterproof seal but will help reduce dust, debris and rainwater ingress.
Door stays
Optional door stays are available and are particularly worth considering on 50/50 split doors that are opened frequently or where the door is more exposed to wind.
Matching pedestrian doors
GDO also offers matching pedestrian access doors built to the same Icon specification, providing a consistent look and feel around the property.
These side doors are available in widths up to 1320 mm wide and 2340 mm high and feature the same lever handle and deadlock arrangement as the main garage doors.
How to Specify Your Custom Door
The GDO Icon side hinged door is made to measure to your exact requirements. Please review the key options below to configure the perfect doorset for your garage.
1. Ordering Your Size
To order, first select the pricing band from the dropdown menu that represents the nearest larger 'up to' size for your requirements. Once selected, you will be prompted to enter your exact custom measurements into the dedicated text boxes provided. Please note: The measurements you provide must be the exact Overall Width and Overall Height including the aluminium fixing frame.
2. Door Panel Configuration & Leading Leaf
You can choose how your doors are divided and which door opens first (the active/leading door):
- Panel Split: Choose a symmetrical 50/50 split, or an asymmetric 1/3 : 2/3 split (ideal for frequent pedestrian access).
- Leading Door: Select whether the Left Hand or Right Hand door opens first (viewed from the outside looking in).
- Important Note: If you choose a 1/3 : 2/3 split configuration, the smaller 1/3rd door must always be the active, leading door.
3. Colours & Frame Finishes
Personalise your garage door to perfectly match your home's exterior:
- Door Colour: Choose from an extensive palette of 32 high-quality paint finishes.
- Frame Colour: The aluminium outer fixing frame comes in standard White. Alternatively, for a small additional charge, you can choose to have the frame colour-matched perfectly to your chosen door panel colour.
4. Friction Door Stays (Highly Recommended)
Door stays are a key optional extra that we strongly recommend considering. They securely prop the door leaves open at roughly 90 degrees, preventing them from blowing shut in the wind or swinging back on you while you are moving items in and out of the garage.
5. Bottom Weatherseals
To help prevent leaves, dust, and draughts from blowing under your door, you can add a bottom weatherseal to the door panels. Depending on your floor levels and clearances, you can select from a choice of depths, available in either a solid rubber blade or a flexible brush seal.

Installation Guidance: GDO Icon Side Hinged Doors
The GDO Icon side hinged garage door is designed with both the professional installer and the competent DIY enthusiast in mind. Because this is supplied as a complete, factory preassembled doorset, the installation process is straightforward, fast, and highly secure.
What is a Doorset?
Unlike traditional timber doors that require you to build a frame, hang the hinges, and align the lock keeps on site, the GDO Icon is delivered entirely preassembled. The steel door panels are already hung on their 3D adjustable hinges within the aluminium fixing frame. The locking mechanisms, seals, and keeps are all factory fitted and aligned.
Key Installation Steps
While full, detailed manufacturer instructions are provided with your delivery, the core installation process involves:
- Preparation: Ensure your brickwork opening is structurally sound, plumb, and square. Ensure your floor is as level as possible, especially if you are fitting an optional aluminium threshold.
- Positioning: Lift the complete doorset into the structural opening. Pack and wedge the aluminium outer frame to ensure it sits perfectly level and plumb within the aperture.
- Fixing: Drill through the aluminium frame and secure it directly into the surrounding brickwork or blockwork using suitable heavy duty frame fixings.
Warranty Information: GDO Icon Side Hinged Doors
The GDO Icon range is manufactured in the UK to the highest quality standards, using premium materials and robust engineering. For your peace of mind, these doors are backed by comprehensive manufacturer warranties.
10 Year Safe and Reliable Operation
A warranty covering the safe and reliable operation of the garage door is provided for a period of 10 years from the date of purchase. This warranty covers the core structural integrity of the door panels and framing when used in normal domestic applications.
2 Year Comprehensive Parts Guarantee
A standard guarantee of 2 years is provided to cover all moving parts and hardware, subject to normal usage (defined as up to 5 open/close operations per day). This includes:
• Lock mechanisms and cylinders
• 3D adjustable hinges
• Shoot bolts and latches
• Door stays (if fitted)
2 Year Factory Paint Finish Guarantee
The highly durable factory applied powder-coated paint finish is guaranteed for 2 years against significant flaking, peeling, or fading. The paint finish is cosmetic, and the front panel should appear uniform when viewed from a distance of 3 metres. (Please note: Minor blemishes in the finish are inevitable due to the manufacturing process and are not considered a defect. The rear of the door will naturally have a different level of coating and is not subject to the same uniform finish guarantee as the front).
Important Warranty Conditions
To ensure your warranty remains valid, please be aware of the following manufacturer conditions:
• The door must be installed correctly in accordance with the manufacturer's provided instructions.
• The product must be maintained, cleaned, and serviced regularly (an annual inspection is recommended).
• The door must be kept clean and free from impact damage. Any areas of accidental paint damage must be dressed with touch-up paint as soon as possible.
• The warranty does not cover damage caused by abnormal environmental influences, such as fire, acidic/alkaline solutions, bird droppings, or abnormal atmospheric pollution.
• Coastal Locations: Doors fitted within 250 metres of the coastline or an inland estuary are exempt from the paint finish warranty due to the highly corrosive nature of salt air. (For coastal locations, we recommend considering GRP or aluminium door panels).

Ordering size = overall size
Please refer to the measuring drawing for this product: the ordering width and ordering height are the exact overall dimensions of the complete doorset, including the factory-fitted steel outer sub frame.
When you enter your sizes online, you are entering the overall frame size (width and height), not the opening size and not the size of the door leaves only.
Allowing fitting tolerance
Always remember to allow some fitting tolerance between the steel frame and the structural opening. In an ideal aperture we recommend allowing around 10 mm clearance all round.
In practice, this usually means measuring the structural opening width and height in several places, taking the smallest width and smallest height, and then deducting approximately 10 mm from each to give your ordering width and ordering height.
Real-world openings are often not perfectly level or square, so make sure you allow enough tolerance to cope with any out-of-level floors, out-of-plumb reveals or variations across the opening.
Minimum and maximum ordering sizes
All sizes below are ordering sizes (overall width x overall height including the steel outer frame). The same minimum and maximum heights apply to both 50/50 and 1/3–2/3 split options.
| Door split | Minimum width (mm) | Maximum width (mm) | Minimum height (mm) | Maximum height (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/3 – 2/3 | 1500 | 2438 | 1500 | 2286 |
| 50/50 | 1500 | 2650 | 1500 | 2286 |
Helpful measuring tips
- Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the opening, and the height on both sides; always use the smallest readings as your basis.
- Check the floor level across the opening, as any fall or step may reduce the usable height on one side.
- Confirm there is enough clear space for the doors to swing open fully on the chosen side, taking into account paths, walls, downpipes and other obstructions.
