GDO ROLL77 Electric Key and Genesis Button Control

Simple, Hard Wired Control Inside and Out

The GDO ROLL77 Electric Key and Genesis Button Control is a UK manufactured, insulated aluminium roller garage door designed for people who want simple, hard wired controls rather than remote handsets. It combines robust 77mm double skinned slats and a foam filled core with an easy to use Genesis control panel inside the garage and a secure key switch outside, so you can operate the door confidently whether you are in the garage or arriving on foot from the driveway.

Ideal for Integral and Foot-Access Garages

Instead of fobs and batteries, you have clear, intuitive buttons and a key. Press once on the internal panel to open the door fully, then press and hold to close so you can stop it instantly if anything is in the way. From outside, you unlock and turn the key to open or close while watching the door move, making this an ideal solution where the garage is integral to the house or used mainly as a store, utility area or workshop rather than a daily drive-in space.

Made to Measure with Premium Finishes

Every GDO ROLL77 is made to measure, manufactured to the exact millimetre up to 5200mm wide and 2900mm high, so it fits neatly and helps to maximise weather sealing and security. The insulated curtain is available in 18 premium powder coated colours, with matching or contrasting hoods and guides if you choose to add a half or full hood for extra weather protection or to cloak the roll.

Reliable, Practical and Easy to Live With

Behind the clean appearance sits a straightforward, reliable mechanism with a built in internal manual override, so you can always wind the door open or closed in a power cut. If the door is your only access, you can also add an external low level manual release for complete peace of mind. The overall result is an insulated roller garage door that is easy to use, easy to install and easy to live with, without the complexity of full remote control systems.

Construction and Insulation

Roll77 slat profile

The GDO ROLL 77 is constructed from high quality 77mm deep, double skinned aluminium slats with a foam filled core. It is a made to measure, electrically operated roller garage door as standard, manufactured to the exact millimetre in both width and height for a precise fit.

Genesis Control Panel and External Key Switch

This model uses the Genesis hard wired control system rather than remote handsets. Inside the garage, a compact Genesis wall mounted control panel provides simple push button operation. From this panel you press once to open the door fully and press and hold to close, giving semi automatic “impulse to open, hold to run to close” control.

For access from outside, a robust wall mounted external key switch is included as standard. Using the security key, you can open the door with a single impulse turn and close it by turning and holding the key while watching the door move. This combination gives you straightforward, reliable operation from both inside and outside without the complexity of wireless remote controls.

Manual Override and Safety

The door incorporates an internal emergency manual override in case of a power failure. A supplied winding handle hooks onto the eye of the motor drive so you can wind the door open or closed by hand. The override can be positioned on either the left or right side as viewed from inside the garage to suit your layout.

Safety during closing is provided by the “hold to run” control logic. Because you must keep the close button (or key) held while the door travels down, you can stop the door instantly at any point if you see an obstruction in the opening.

Barrel, Endplates and Headroom

The curtain rolls around a steel barrel which is supported on both sides by steel endplates measuring 300mm x 300mm. This is the headroom you need if you wish to conceal the roll. Always allow for some curtain hang down when the door is fully open if clear opening height is critical.

Hood Cover Options

As standard, the GDO ROLL 77 is supplied without a hood cover, so the roll and barrel remain visible when the door is open. You can upgrade to a hood cover to improve appearance and protection, depending on how and where the door is fitted:

GDO Roll77 hood cover options
  • Half hood cover: Provides a neat aluminium fascia to cloak the front and top of the roll, ideal when fitting under or behind a lintel and you want to hide the exposed roll from outside.
  • Full hood cover: Completely encloses the barrel and curtain for the best protection against weather and dust. Recommended for external fitting or more exposed locations, and where a fully finished appearance is desired.

Guides, Sizes and Clear Openings

Door guides on each side are either 75mm or 90mm wide and 34mm deep. The door is ordered using the Over Guide Width (OGW), which is the total width of the curtain plus both guides combined.

The door can be fitted behind or inbetween the structural opening as required, but always check that you have ordered the correct dimensions to allow for the guides, endplates and any hood cover selected (the hood uses the same overall dimensions).

Ordering size is specified as Over Guide Width (OGW) x Guide Height (GH).

Doors up to 3000mm wide are supplied with 75mm wide guides either side:
Clear opening width = Ordering size less 140mm
Clear opening height = Guide height (ordering size) less 110mm

Doors over 3000mm wide are supplied with 90mm wide guides either side:
Clear opening width = Ordering size less 180mm
Clear opening height = Guide height (ordering size) less 110mm
(to allow for the bottom slat hang down into the guides when the door is open)

Maximum width including guides is 5200mm.
Maximum guide height is 2900mm (total approximately 3200mm including endplates and hood) with a maximum width of 4600mm at this height.

This model is available in a range of standard and premium finishes depending on the specification chosen. Premium colour options include:

Fitting Positions

> Between the opening
> Behind the opening

Fitting behind the opening gives maximum clear width and height and allows the door to be installed in complex openings regardless of shape. Single and double garage door sizes are catered for, making this door highly practical for owners of 4x4 vehicles or other larger cars that might otherwise struggle to access the garage. The same installation style can also be used to fit the door externally; in this case, the motor handing and curtain orientation are reversed and a full hood cover is strongly recommended.

Please note: upon delivery, the accessory box will include a QR code to direct you to the most up-to-date installation instructions.

Simple, Hard Wired Installation

The GDO ROLL77 Electric Key and Genesis Button Control has been designed to be very straightforward to install. The curtain and barrel are supplied pre-assembled, the guides are pre-formed and the Genesis control panel with external key switch uses simple hard wired connections. There is no remote handset programming, making this system ideal for competent DIY installers or any local builder or electrician.

Core Installation Steps

  • Prepare the opening: Check the structural opening is sound and square, confirm your ordered Over Guide Width (OGW) and guide height match the intended fitting position (behind or inbetween the opening).
  • Fix the guides: Position the side guides plumb and level, then securely fix them to the wall or frame in accordance with the fitting instructions.
  • Mount the barrel and curtain: Lift the pre-assembled barrel and curtain into place on the steel endplates, allowing around 300mm headroom for the roll and any hood cover, then fix the endplates firmly to the structure.
  • Connect the power: Plug the factory-fitted mains lead into a suitable 13 amp, three pin, switched socket. Any new socket or fixed wiring must be installed by a qualified electrician.
  • Fit the Genesis control panel: Mount the internal Genesis control unit inside the garage at a convenient height, where you have clear sight of the door while operating the buttons.
  • Test operation: Check the door opens fully with a single press of the open button and closes smoothly using the hold-to-run close command, confirming you can stop the door at any point.

Installing and Using the External Key Switch

The external key switch is supplied as standard with this model and gives you secure access from outside the garage. It is housed in a robust steel or alloy body and connects back to the Genesis control panel using a low voltage cable.

  • Positioning: Mount the key switch on the outside wall of the garage, usually near the opening at a comfortable operating height, but where it is not easily reached by children.
  • Cabling: Run the supplied control cable from the key switch position back to the Genesis control panel inside, keeping it secure and away from any moving parts of the door. Follow the wiring terminals shown in the Genesis instructions for the external key switch connections.
  • Operation: To open the door from outside, insert the key and turn to send an impulse command; the door will open fully. To close, turn and hold the key so you can watch the door while it closes, releasing it immediately if you see any obstruction in the opening.
  • Security: The key switch uses dedicated security keys, so only authorised users can operate the door externally. When the key is removed, the switch returns to a neutral position and the door cannot be moved from outside.

Manual Override and External Release

Every GDO ROLL77 is supplied with an internal manual override as standard. In a power cut, you simply insert the winding handle onto the internal override point and manually wind the door up or down from inside the garage.

If the roller door is your only way into the garage and there is no separate pedestrian door, you should also specify an external low level manual release. This allows you to operate the manual override from outside if there is no mains power and you cannot enter the garage to use the internal handle.

Always follow the full GDO ROLL77 fitting and wiring instructions supplied with your door, and consult a qualified electrician for any permanent electrical work or if you are unsure about the power supply and control wiring.
