Full Aluminium Hood Included as Standard
Every GDO ROLL 77 Premium door is supplied with a full powder coated aluminium box hood as standard, at every available door size. There is no separate hood upgrade to add or additional cost for this premium feature.
The full hood completely encloses the curtain roll, steel barrel and operating components, apart from the opening where the curtain travels into the side guides. It creates a smart, fully finished appearance from inside or outside the garage and gives the door a more substantial, high quality look.
Unlike an exposed roller door mechanism, the enclosed hood helps protect the curtain roll and working components from dust, wind blown debris, accidental contact and weather exposure. This makes it particularly valuable for externally fitted doors, garages in exposed locations and installations where the curtain roll is visible.
The full aluminium hood is supplied in the same premium colour as your selected curtain, along with matching heavy duty brush lined side guides. The result is a fully coordinated roller garage door installation with no exposed roll, barrel or unfinished components.

Motor Side and Manual Override Position
Choose whether the motor, power cable and internal manual override are positioned on the left or right side when viewed from inside the garage. Select the side that best suits your available power supply and access requirements.
If your garage has no separate pedestrian entrance, select the optional external low level manual release. This allows you to access and manually operate the door from outside during a power cut.
Optional External Key Switch
Add an optional hard wired external key switch if you would like a fixed external control point as well as the supplied remote handsets.
The key switch allows you to operate the door using a security key from outside the garage. It is useful where several people need access, where remote handsets may not always be available, or where you prefer an additional fixed driveway control point.
Please note that an external key switch operates the door electrically and does not provide manual access during a power cut. Select the external low level manual release if there is no other access into your garage.

Fitting a GDO ROLL77 roller garage door is a straightforward two-person job for competent DIYers or tradespeople. Because every door is purpose-made to your exact ordering dimensions, taking time to check your opening, levels, and tolerances before drilling will ensure a smooth, trouble-free installation and a quiet, long-lasting door action.
1. Pre-Installation Checklist & Site Preparation
Before unpacking the door components, inspect the structural opening and verify the following:
• Floor Level: A level floor across the full opening is essential for the bottom rubber weatherseal to compress evenly and ensure proper operation of the optical safety edge.
• Headroom Check: Ensure you have a clear 300mm of vertical headroom above the guide height for the 300mm x 300mm endplates and full aluminium box hood.
• Side Room (Face Fix): Ensure you have at least 75mm (or 90mm on doors over 3000mm wide) of solid pier on each side to secure the aluminium guide channels.
• Power Supply: Position a standard 13-amp unswitched fused spur or socket within 1.5 metres of the Somfy Rollixo control unit location on the motor side.
2. Choosing Your Fitting Position
The GDO ROLL77 can be installed in three primary positions:
• Internal Face Fix (Behind the Opening): Recommended. Guides and endplates fit to the inside face of the brickwork piers and lintel. This maximises clear drive-through width and height, preserving the full structural opening for vehicles.
• Reveal Fix (Inbetween the Opening): Used when there is limited internal headroom or sideroom. The guides bolt directly to the internal brickwork reveals and the endplates sit underneath the lintel. The included full hood neatly encloses the roll from the driveway.
• External Face Fix (Outside the Garage): Fitted to the external brickwork where there is zero internal space. The full hood is mandatory, and the motor handing and curtain roll direction are reversed.
3. Step-by-Step Installation Summary
Step 1 — Assemble the Framework: Insert the steel endplate spigots into the top of each aluminium side guide channel on a clean, flat floor to form a rigid 'U-frame'. Slide the top and rear sections of the aluminium full hood into the endplate channels.
Step 2 — Position and Level: Lift the assembled framework into position against the opening. Use a spirit level to verify that both side guides are perfectly plumb and the endplates are completely level across the top. Secure the guides using appropriate heavy-duty masonry fixings at approx. 500mm centres.
Step 3 — Mount the Barrel & Motor: Fit the tubular motor into the drive endplate and mount the steel barrel and anti-drop safety brake onto the dummy endplate. Ensure the barrel turns freely and lock the safety clips in place.
