Idigbo: The Alternative to Oak

The benefitting properties of Idigbo mean it is an excellent choice of timber for the manufacturing of up and over and side hinged garage doors. Perhaps one of its most appealing qualities, Idigbo is a great alternative to oak. Although a beautifully grained timber, the weight of oak can make its use as a garage door material quite difficult. As a result of this, Idigo is frequently purchased to substitute what was originally planned to be an oak door, avoiding the problematic nature of oak, as well as the price tag.

Idigbo however, can provide a beautiful looking timber door without such problems, meaning it has been a substitute for oak on many occasions when there have been complications due to its weight or budget.

Woodrite Idigbo Garage DoorAppearance

The similarities in aesthetic between Idigbo and Oak is a greatly appealing quality that Idigbo has to offer: pale yellow to light brown coloured wood, a course texture and similar grain to oak, which is heavy, and straight to slightly irregular.

Woodrite have a range of garage doors dedicated to Idigbo, in which are some very complimenting designs: the Warwick range. Woodrite also offer bespoke garage door designs manufactured with Idigbo using either a box section steel chassis or alternatively, a ‘solid build’ can be carried out. The latter consists of traditional joinery techniques being used to manufacture panels that are made completely out of timber.

Not only is Woodrite’s Warwick range available as up and over doors, but side hinged garage doors also. Side hinged doors are a fantastic option if the garage door is accessed often both on foot and by car, as only one leaf can be opened if necessary. With a more traditional aesthetic, the side hinged doors would complement any period property, especially with the various designs available in the Warwick range.

Additionally, there is also a range of personnel doors by Woodrite to co-ordinate alongside your garage door for matching, easy access.

Woodrite have a plethora of finishes to choose from:

  • Classic Natural Oak
  • Old Oak
  • Mid Oak
  • Green Oak
  • Midnight Oak
  • Red Oak

Durability

The strength of Idigbo is excellent, and it is as stiff as English oak in regards to bending, however is softer and less resistant to shock loads. Idigbo’s durability makes it a more favourable species of timber than oak, especially in regards to the ever-changing climate in the UK. As Idigbo dries well and quickly, there is little distortion, splitting or shrinkage.

The Warwick up and over range by Woodrite are of panel-construction, to be used with Masta-Gear and Super-Chassis or solid construction with Masta-Gear. Doors with a solid construction have larger, deeper wooden rails, meaning there is no need for a steel chassis or sub-frame. Mechanisms are attached to the panel of the door, creating a sleek, internal look, whilst very large doors can have steel or timber bracing on the inside in order to reduce “door sag” whilst open.

Idigbo is an extremely favourable hardwood species of timber, and its high quality and favourable qualities mean it is absolutely one to recommend.
