GDO ROLL77 Electric Key and Genesis Button Control (3 Standard Colours)

Simple Control from Inside and Outside

The GDO ROLL77 Electric Key and Genesis Button Control model gives you the same robust, insulated roller door as the standard push button version, but with extra convenience built in. A Genesis wall mounted control panel inside the garage provides simple push button operation, while an external key switch lets you open and close the door from outside using a secure key. This is ideal if you regularly arrive at the garage from outside and want hard wired controls without remote handsets.

Best for Regular External Access

This model suits garages that are often accessed directly from the driveway, particularly where there is no side or rear pedestrian door. From inside, you can use the Genesis control panel buttons just like a normal wall switch. From outside, you simply insert and turn the key in the external switch to activate the door, removing the need to carry remote controls but still giving quick, convenient access.

Semi Automatic, Safe Operation

The Genesis control system is set up so the door opens on a single impulse command and closes using a “hold to run” action. You press once to open fully, then press and hold to close, giving you full control and allowing you to stop the door at any point while you can see it moving. This simple operating logic keeps the system compliant without extra safety beams or bottom edge sensors and avoids the complexity and cost of full remote control systems.

Made to Measure with 3 Standard Colours

As with all GDO ROLL77 models, this door is made to measure as standard, manufactured to the exact millimetre for a neat, secure fit in your opening. It is supplied in three popular standard curtain colours that complement most homes and keep the overall price highly competitive:

  • White (RAL 9016)
  • Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016)
  • Black (RAL 9005)

Matching guides in white, anthracite or black complete the clean, modern appearance around the opening.

When to Choose this Model

Choose the GDO ROLL77 Electric Key and Genesis Button Control if you like the idea of simple, reliable hard wired operation but also need regular external access via a key switch. If you only ever use the garage from inside, the basic push button model may be sufficient, while if you want remote handsets or smartphone control there are upgraded GDO ROLL77 remote models available.

How to Order Your Made to Measure Door

Ordering your GDO ROLL77 is straightforward. First, measure your opening and select the nearest next size up as an “up to” size from the drop down menu to choose your price band. Then, enter your exact required width and height in the boxes provided so your door is manufactured to the precise millimetre.

Choose Your Standard Colour

This model is supplied in three popular standard curtain colours, chosen to suit most UK homes while keeping costs highly competitive:

  • White (RAL 9016)
  • Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016)
  • Black (RAL 9005)

The guides are supplied in a matching white, black or anthracite finish when ordered, creating a clean, coordinated appearance around the opening.

Included Control and Access

This GDO ROLL77 model is supplied with the Genesis wall mounted control panel inside the garage as standard, together with a fixed external key switch. The Genesis control provides simple push button operation from inside, while the key switch gives secure access from outside without the need for remote controls.

  • Genesis Control Panel (internal): Mounted inside the garage, this panel offers clear up and down buttons for everyday use, with semi-automatic operation for opening and “hold to run” control for closing.
  • External Key Switch (included): A robust, wall mounted key switch in a steel housing lets you open and close the door from the driveway using security keys. This is ideal if you regularly approach the garage from outside or have no separate pedestrian door.
  • Additional Internal Push Button (optional): You can add a second internal wall mounted push button if you want control from another location inside the garage, wired back to the Genesis control panel.

Manual Override and External Release

Every GDO ROLL77 is supplied with an internal manual override system as standard. In the event of a power cut, you simply use the supplied winding handle on the internal override point to wind the door open or closed from inside the garage.

If your garage has no other access door and the roller door is your only way in, you should add an external manual low-level release. This allows you to operate the manual override from outside if there is a power failure and you cannot get into the garage.

Hood Cover Options

As standard, this door is supplied with no hood cover. When fitting fully behind your garage opening, you may choose to leave the curtain roll exposed. However, you can upgrade to improve appearance and protection:

GDO Roll 77 Hood Cover Options
  • Half Hood Cover: Provides a neat aluminium fascia to cover the front and top of the roll. Ideal when installing underneath or behind a lintel with limited headroom and you wish to cloak the exposed section from outside.
  • Full Hood Cover: Fully encloses the curtain roll and mechanism, offering the best protection against weather and dust. Strongly recommended for external installations or where a fully finished look is desired.

Configuring Your Final Details

  • Guide colours: Select matching guides to your chosen curtain colour for a uniform look.
  • Installation position: Choose to fit the door behind the opening (recommended for maximum clear width and height) or inbetween the opening where required by your garage structure. External fitting is also possible when combined with a full hood.
  • Motor side: Decide which side you want the electric motor, internal manual override and power cable to be situated on when viewed from inside the garage, to suit your socket position and access.

Construction and Operation

Roll77 slat profile

The GDO ROLL 77 is constructed from high quality 77mm deep, double skinned aluminium slats with a foam filled core. It is a made to measure, electrically operated roller garage door as standard, manufactured to the exact millimetre in both width and height.

This model uses a simple internal wall mounted control panel together with an external key switch, giving you push button operation from inside and secure key control from outside. The Genesis control provides semi automatic opening (impulse to fully open) and “hold to run” control for closing, so you can stop the door at any point while you can see it moving.

Safety and Bottom Slat

The bottom slat is an extruded aluminium profile supplied with an integrated rubber seal. The safety system is built into the control logic: you must keep the close button pressed while the door is closing, giving you full control and allowing you to release the button immediately if you see an obstruction in the opening.

Barrel, Endplates and Headroom

The curtain rolls around a steel barrel which is supported on both sides by steel endplates measuring 300mm x 300mm. This is the headroom required if you wish to conceal the roll inside the garage. Always allow for curtain hang down when the door is fully open if the clear opening height is critical for you; an allowance of up to 50–110mm is typical on insulated roller doors.

Guides, Sizes and Clear Openings

Door guides on each side are either 75mm or 90mm wide and 34mm deep, and the door is ordered using the Over Guide Width (OGW), which is the total width of the curtain plus both guides combined.

The door can be fitted behind or inbetween the structural opening as required, but always check that you have ordered the correct dimensions to allow for the guides, endplates and any full hood cover (the hood uses the same overall dimensions).

Ordering size is specified as Over Guide Width (OGW) x Guide Height (GH).

Doors up to 3000mm wide are supplied with 75mm wide guides either side:
Clear opening width = Ordering size less 140–150mm
Clear opening height = Guide height (ordering size) less approximately 50mm

Doors over 3000mm wide are supplied with 90mm wide guides either side:
Clear opening width = Ordering size less 180mm
Clear opening height = Guide height (ordering size) less approximately 50mm
(to allow for the bottom slat hang down into the guides when the door is open)

Maximum width including guides is 5200mm.
Maximum guide height is 2900mm (overall height approximately 3200mm including endplates and hood) with a maximum width of 4600mm at this height.

Fitting Positions

> Between the opening
> Behind the opening

Fitting behind the opening gives maximum clear width and height and allows the door to be installed in complex openings regardless of shape. Single and double garage door sizes are catered for, making this door highly practical for owners of 4x4 vehicles or other larger cars that might otherwise struggle to access the garage. The same installation style can also be used to fit the door externally; in this case the motor handing and curtain orientation are reversed and a full hood cover is strongly recommended.

Simple, Hard Wired Installation

The GDO ROLL77 Electric Key and Genesis Button Control has been designed to be very straightforward to install. The curtain and barrel are supplied pre-assembled, the guides are pre-formed and the Genesis control panel with external key switch uses simple hard wired connections. There is no remote handset programming, making this system ideal for competent DIY installers or any local builder or electrician.

Core Installation Steps

  • Prepare the opening: Check the structural opening is sound and square, confirm your ordered Over Guide Width (OGW) and guide height match the intended fitting position (behind or inbetween the opening).
  • Fix the guides: Position the side guides plumb and level, then securely fix them to the wall or frame in accordance with the fitting instructions.
  • Mount the barrel and curtain: Lift the pre-assembled barrel and curtain into place on the steel endplates, allowing around 300mm headroom for the roll and any hood cover, then fix the endplates firmly to the structure.
  • Connect the power: Plug the factory-fitted mains lead into a suitable 13 amp, three pin, switched socket. Any new socket or fixed wiring must be installed by a qualified electrician.
  • Fit the Genesis control panel: Mount the internal Genesis control unit inside the garage at a convenient height, where you have clear sight of the door while operating the buttons.
  • Test operation: Check the door opens fully with a single press of the open button and closes smoothly using the hold-to-run close command, confirming you can stop the door at any point.

Installing and Using the External Key Switch

The external key switch is supplied as standard with this model and gives you secure access from outside the garage. It is housed in a robust steel or alloy body and connects back to the Genesis control panel using a low voltage cable.

  • Positioning: Mount the key switch on the outside wall of the garage, usually near the opening at a comfortable operating height, but where it is not easily reached by children.
  • Cabling: Run the supplied control cable from the key switch position back to the Genesis control panel inside, keeping it secure and away from any moving parts of the door. Follow the wiring terminals shown in the Genesis instructions for the external key switch connections.
  • Operation: To open the door from outside, insert the key and turn to send an impulse command; the door will open fully. To close, turn and hold the key so you can watch the door while it closes, releasing it immediately if you see any obstruction in the opening.
  • Security: The key switch uses dedicated security keys, so only authorised users can operate the door externally. When the key is removed, the switch returns to a neutral position and the door cannot be moved from outside.

Manual Override and External Release

Every GDO ROLL77 is supplied with an internal manual override as standard. In a power cut, you simply insert the winding handle onto the internal override point and manually wind the door up or down from inside the garage.

If the roller door is your only way into the garage and there is no separate pedestrian door, you should also specify an external low level manual release. This allows you to operate the manual override from outside if there is no mains power and you cannot enter the garage to use the internal handle.

Always follow the full GDO ROLL77 fitting and wiring instructions supplied with your door, and consult a qualified electrician for any permanent electrical work or if you are unsure about the power supply and control wiring.
