Purpose Made Garage Doors

Today, there are many situations in which it is beneficial to look at a purpose made garage door. Not does this optimise your opening size, but also makes installation easier, improves the aesthetic, and often reduces the cost to less than anticipated.

Many door suppliers will try to make a standard size garage door fit into a non standard structural opening in order to save money and get the door faster from stock. It is achieved by using packers, or using the fact that roller or sectional doors do not go through the opening, therefore you can install larger doors in smaller openings and vice versa. This may be fine if you don’t have issues with the drive through dimensions, but in most cases everyone benefits from the maximum width and height, and of course the best possible visual appearance.

The left image shows a perfectly acceptable installation of a sectional garage door where a standard door size has been used in a non standard opening, with the result of the outer frame showing. The outer frame required additional profiles to match the door panel colour but can also contrast it depending on individual tastes.

The right image shows a sectional garage door where the structural opening size is exactly the same as the door ordering size to maximise the opening and drive through dimensions. In the case of an insulated sectional door this provides the very best insulation as the outer frame is not insulated and the door panel in this instance will slightly overlap the structure to provide a thermal break.

Bear in mind that, whilst it is often ideal to have a purpose made door, you still have to accommodate the fixing sub framework and mechanism for the door type chosen, and this requires space inside and around the structural opening. If there isn’t sufficient installation space then compromises will have to be made anyway in the door ordering sizes.

Many packers, infills and special profiles exist to assist when a door has to be fitted which isn’t the exact size required for an opening, so whilst we always recommend trying to optimise by installing the exact right size door, we also realise this is not always possible.
