Timber Garage Doors: Choosing the Right Species

For more than 20 years, Woodrite earned an excellent reputation for their Coach House collection. Whether you're matching existing joinery on a period property or designing an entrance for a modern home, timber provides natural character and structural strength that pressed steel and aluminium simply cannot replicate.

When ordering a replacement or custom built timber door, choosing the right timber species is critical to how the door balances on its gear and how it stands up to everyday weathering:

  • Western Red Cedar: Naturally lightweight with low moisture movement. Its light weight puts less demand on spring counterbalances and lifting gear, making manual operation effortless. It holds rich, warm honey tones and contains natural oils that resist rot and insect attack in damp British climates.
  • European Oak: A dense, heavy hardwood known for distinctive grain patterns and strength. Because of its weight, oak panels demand heavy-duty retractable lifting arms or heavy-gauge steel chassis gear to operate smoothly.
  • Idigbo: A West African hardwood that behaves like oak visually, but without the extreme weight or high tannin leaching. An excellent timber for wide boarded and raised-and-fielded panel designs that need structural stability.
  • Accoya®: An acetylated, modified wood where the cellular structure is treated to prevent water absorption. It will not twist, swell, or shrink with seasonal changes, allowing precision tolerances and factory microporous paint warranties of up to 10 years.

*Practical Note: Timber is a living natural product. All doors supplied factory finished must receive regular inspections and care to maintain the protective microporous coating, especially on south-facing or exposed coastal elevations.

Somerset Collection (Panel Construction)

The Somerset range uses panel-built construction where timber is fitted into a sub-frame chassis. This design keeps the overall weight manageable and balances perfectly on standard retractable or canopy operating gear. Read more about gear and chassis options >

Somerset Chard The Chard
Somerset Kingsdon The Kingsdon
Somerset Yeovil The Yeovil

Buckingham & Balmoral Collection (Solid Timber Construction)

Solid-construction doors use wider, deeper cedar framing sections that carry their own structural load without requiring an external steel chassis border. Retractable gear mounts directly to the timber leaf, presenting a clear, all-wood face inside the garage. On wider openings, subtle rear bracing is added to prevent door leaf deflection.

Warwick Claverdon The Claverdon
Warwick Southam Wide The Southam Wide

Monmouth Collection (English & European Oak)

Crafted for classic brick, stone, and barn-conversion homes where only authentic oak will do. Monmouth doors use heavy-duty steel sub-chassis frames and commercial-grade counterbalance springs to handle the panel weight smoothly.

Monmouth Oakridge Oak Oakridge
Monmouth Oakgrove Oak Oakgrove

Thetford Collection (Modified Accoya®)

Thetford designs use non-toxic, acetylated timber that will not swell against timber frame jambs in wet weather. With outstanding dimensional stability, factory-painted finishes last far longer between re-treatment cycles than standard softwoods.
