Guide and Hood Colours
The aluminium side guides and optional hood components can be supplied in White, Black or Anthracite Grey. Choose matching guides for a coordinated appearance, or select a contrasting colour to frame the garage opening.
For example, Anthracite Grey or Black guides can create a smart frame around a lighter curtain colour, while matching guides create a more uniform finish.

Hood Cover Options
The curtain roll is visible when the door is open unless you select a hood cover. Choose the option that best suits the fitting position and level of finish required.
No hood: Suitable for many behind opening internal installations where the curtain roll is not visible from outside and a more economical specification is preferred.
Half hood: Covers the front and top of the curtain roll. It is a popular option for between-opening installations or where the roll is visible from the front of the garage.
Full hood: Encloses the curtain roll and barrel, apart from the opening where the curtain enters the side guides. This is strongly recommended for external fitting and more exposed locations, where it helps protect the operating components from weather, debris and accidental contact.

The robust curtain provides a strong, insulated solution for single and double garages while rolling compactly above the opening.

Every door is manufactured to your exact width and height requirements for a precise fit, helping you make the most of the available space inside your garage.

Somfy Remote Control Operation

This GDO ROLL 77 model is supplied with a Somfy remote control system for convenient everyday operation.

Your door includes two Somfy RTS remote control handsets, a wireless Somfy wall switch, and a wall mounted receiver and control box. Open and close the door from your vehicle, driveway or inside the garage using the supplied controls.

The wireless wall switch provides simple one touch operation from inside the garage and can be positioned where it is most useful, without wiring between the switch and control box.

Please note that the Somfy Optimo control box does not include built in control buttons or a courtesy light. Choose the GDO ROLL 77 Somfy Rollixo model if you require these features.

Safety and Manual Override

The bottom slat is manufactured from extruded aluminium and fitted with a rubber weather seal incorporating an optical safety edge. If the door detects an obstacle while closing, it will stop and automatically reverse to help protect people, vehicles and property.

An internal manual override is supplied as standard for use in the event of a power cut. The supplied winding handle hooks onto the eye of the motor drive, allowing the door to be opened or closed manually from inside the garage.

Choose whether the motor, internal manual override and power cable are positioned on the left or right side when viewed from inside the garage, according to your available power supply and preferred access arrangement.

The curtain rolls around a durable steel barrel, supported by steel endplates on each side. Allow approximately 300mm above the guide height for the curtain roll and endplates.

When the door is fully open, allow up to 110mm for the bottom slat to hang down within the guides. This is important where maximum drive through height is required for a vehicle, roof box or stored equipment.

Guides, Sizes and Clear Openings

The aluminium side guides are approximately 34mm deep and supplied in one of two widths, depending on the overall door width. Your ordering size is stated as Over Guide Width (OGW) x Guide Height (GH).

Over Guide Width is the total width of the curtain and both side guides combined. Always allow for the guides, endplates and any selected hood cover when checking your available installation space.

Up to 3000mm 75mm each side OGW less 150mm GH less 110mm

Fitting Positions

Between the Opening

The door is fitted within the structural opening. This gives a recessed appearance, but the side guides reduce the available clear opening width and the bottom slat hang down reduces the available clear opening height.

Behind the Opening

The door is fitted to the wall face behind the structural opening. This is the most popular installation position because it provides the maximum available clear opening width and height.

Behind-opening fitting can also be used for external installation. In this situation, the motor handing and curtain orientation are reversed. A full hood cover is strongly recommended to protect the curtain roll and operating components.

Hood Cover Options

GDO ROLL 77 half hood and full hood cover options

No hood: Suitable for many internal behind-opening installations where the curtain roll is not visible from outside.

Half hood: Covers the front and top of the curtain roll, creating a neater finish where the roll is visible from the front of the garage.

Full hood: Encloses the curtain roll and barrel, apart from the opening where the curtain enters the side guides. It is strongly recommended for external fitting and exposed locations, where it helps protect the roll and operating components from weather, debris and accidental contact.

Please note: Your accessory box includes a QR code linking to the latest GDO ROLL 77 installation instructions for your specific door configuration. Always follow the instructions supplied with your door, as components and procedures can vary by control system and selected options.

Before You Start

The GDO ROLL 77 insulated electric roller garage door is designed for installation by a competent DIY installer or experienced tradesperson. Before ordering and before installation, check that your garage opening is square, the fixing surfaces are sound, and you have sufficient side room and headroom for the guides, curtain roll, endplates and any selected hood cover.

Although every door is made to measure, accurate surveying and correct installation are essential for safe and reliable operation.

Safety note: At least two people are required to safely lift and position the curtain, barrel and motor assembly. Take care when working at height, handling heavy components and connecting the electrical supply.

Installation Positions

Internal Face Fit

Internal face fitting, also known as fitting behind the opening, is the most popular and generally recommended installation method. The guides are fixed to the inside wall face behind the brickwork piers, allowing the door to provide the maximum possible clear drive through width and height.

When fitted internally, the curtain roll, motor and guides are located inside the garage. A hood cover can be selected where a neater finish or additional protection for the curtain roll is preferred.

Between Opening Fit

Between opening fitting, also known as reveal fitting, positions the guides within the structural opening beneath the lintel. This can provide a neat recessed appearance, but the guide rails reduce the available clear opening width and the bottom slat hang down reduces the available clear opening height.

Because the guide rails, endplates and curtain roll may be visible from outside, a half hood or full hood cover is often selected to create a more finished appearance.

External Face Fit

External face fitting positions the door on the outside wall face of the garage. This can be useful where there is insufficient internal headroom, limited internal side room or an unsuitable internal fixing position.

A full hood cover is strongly recommended for external installations to protect the curtain roll, barrel and operating components from weather, debris and accidental contact. For external fitting, the curtain orientation and motor handing are reversed, so this must be selected correctly when ordering.

Installation Overview

The following is a general overview only. Refer to the door-specific instructions supplied via the QR code and in the accessory box for the complete installation sequence.

  1. Check the delivery: Confirm that all items are present and undamaged, including the guides, barrel and motor assembly, curtain, control equipment, safety edge components, manual override parts and selected hood components.
  2. Prepare the opening: Check that the opening is square and clear of obstructions. Confirm that the fixing surfaces are strong enough for the guide rails and endplates.
  3. Prepare the guides: Mark and pre-drill the aluminium guide rails as required for your chosen fixing surface and installation position.
  4. Fit the guides and endplates: Secure the guides and endplates, or the relevant hood and box assembly, to the masonry, timber or steelwork. Check that the components are level, plumb and correctly aligned before fully tightening the fixings.
  5. Install the barrel and motor assembly: Position and secure the barrel assembly between the endplates in accordance with the supplied instructions.
  6. Fit the manual override: Install the manual override eye and confirm that the winding handle can be used safely from inside the garage during a power cut.
  7. Install the curtain: Carefully feed the curtain into the guide rails and attach it to the barrel using the supplied locking straps or fixings.
  8. Connect the controls: Install the control box in a suitable internal, dry location and connect the motor, optical safety edge and any control accessories exactly as shown in the supplied wiring instructions.
  9. Set and test the door: Set the open and closed travel limits using the method stated in the door-specific instructions. Test the remote controls, wall switch, manual override and optical safety edge before normal use.

Electrical Control Box and Wiring

The Somfy control box includes the receiver for the supplied remote controls and wireless wall switch. It must be installed in a dry internal location, away from direct moisture, excessive heat and accidental damage.

If the door is externally fitted, the control box and electrical connections must still be located internally or within a suitably rated weatherproof enclosure. Do not install non-weatherproof electrical components where they may be exposed to rain, condensation or standing water.

A suitable mains electrical supply is required. Any electrical work should be carried out in accordance with current regulations and by a suitably competent person.

Downloads and Support

Use the QR code supplied with your door to access the latest installation instructions. These instructions should always take priority over general fitting guidance, particularly for wiring, safety edge connection, motor limits and programming of Somfy controls.

If you are unsure about surveying, fixing positions, electrical requirements or installation, please contact our technical team before starting work.
