GDO Dorridge with Windows Purpose Made Up and Over

Georgian panelled styling with natural light

The GDO Classic Dorridge with Windows purpose made up and over garage door takes the popular Georgian panelled Dorridge design and adds a row of glazed windows across the upper section of the door. This brings natural daylight into the garage without sacrificing the traditional panelled look that makes the Dorridge such an appealing choice for period and classically styled UK properties.

The windows are positioned within the upper panels of the door, maintaining the balanced and symmetrical appearance of the Georgian layout. Below them, the solid raised and recessed panels continue to provide the structured, architectural character that defines the Dorridge design. The result is a door that looks every bit as elegant as the solid version but with the very real practical advantage of a brighter, more usable garage space.

Key features and benefits

Purpose made sizing

This model is built to your exact garage opening dimensions. A purpose made door removes the need for infill panels, packing pieces or any compromise on drive through space. It simply fits properly and looks the way a well chosen garage door should.

Classic Georgian panelled design with glazed windows

The lower section of the door features the same deeply recessed rectangular panels with raised borders that define the standard Dorridge. The upper section adds glazed windows set within PVC frames with a subtle grained effect. The glazing uses an obscure stippled finish that allows generous amounts of natural light into the garage while maintaining your privacy from the street.

Interchangeable window designs

The glazing inserts are available in a choice of designs including Plain, Waterford Diamond and Stockton patterns. These can be swapped at any time without the need for special tools, so you can update the look of the windows whenever you choose.

32 factory finished colours

White (RAL9016), Black (RAL9005) and Anthracite Grey (RAL7016) are available as standard colours. A further 29 factory applied colours are available for a small extra charge, letting you match or complement the existing finishes on your home. The window frames are supplied in white as standard.

Canopy or retractable gear

You can select either canopy gear for straightforward manual operation or retractable gear for compatibility with electric operators. Retractable gear allows the door to retract fully into the garage, leaving the opening clear and making it the correct choice for automation.

Factory fitted steel sub frame

The optional factory fitted steel sub frame is strongly recommended. It delivers the complete door, frame and mechanism as a single pre assembled unit in a matching finish. This makes installation faster and easier and produces a cleaner, more secure end result.

Purpose made size ranges

The available purpose made size ranges for this model are:

Minimum Width (Canopy Doors) 1829mm Maximum Width (Canopy Doors) 2744mm

Minimum Height (Canopy Doors) 1905mm Maximum Height (Canopy Doors) 2134mm

Minimum Width (Retractable Doors) 1829mm Maximum Width (Retractable Doors) 4267mm

Minimum Height (Retractable Doors) 1905mm Maximum Height (Retractable Doors) 2134mm

The GDO up and over garage doors are available in a range of standard and purpose made sizes and the first option to decide upon is whether to use canopy or retractable operating gear.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages and generally you have canopy gear is you only every want a manual door and retractable if you want to add an electric operator to the door.

Canopy with steel frame

Canopy mechanism with steel frame

Retractable up and over door
Retractable mechanism with steel frame

The Canopy gear has a preassembled torsion spring above the door panel which lifts the door panel via a cable either side and once opened the door panel sticks out about a third and hence the name ‘canopy’

Retractable operating gear has arms either side lifting the door panel both assisted by tension springs. The motion of the retractable door is far more direct which means it does swing out more but ends up fully retracted inside the garage on the horizontal rails the door slides along. Fitting an electric operator to a retractable garage door is very easy indeed as long as you have the headroom and length to take the operator and its boom.

Colour Finish
Choose from 18 standard powdercoat finished colours with the standard white at no extra charge (RAL9016)
Door panel is finished inside and out in the same colour chosen

GDO Handle option

Handle Option
We offer a standard black handle with euro profile cylinder locking or the option of no handle at all and no hole drilled either when you are putting an electric operator onto the door.
(Most other up and over door brands are not able to offer the door without the handle hole drilled)

Factory Fitted Steel Sub Frame
This is an option we recommend as you receive a door with the frame already fitted and ready to fit into the garage aperture. The frame is a box section steel finished in either white or any of the other colours offered.
It is a 50mm wide frame all round the door on all the steel up and over doors so for the OVERALL dimensions simply add 100 mm to the ordering width and 50mm to the ordering height.

4 point locking
We offer the option to have 4 points of internal locking rather than the standard 2 point locking making the door considerably harder to break into by force.

4 point locking - FOR MANUAL DOORS ONLY
We offer the option to have 4 points of internal locking rather than the standard 2 point locking making the door considerably harder to break into by force.

GDO Classic Steel Up and Over Door Specification

The GDO Classic range of purpose made steel up and over garage doors combines robust construction with outstanding versatility. Engineered for everyday reliability and security, these doors boast the widest standard colour choice of any up and over garage door in the UK, ensuring a perfect match for any property exterior.

Construction and Security

  • Rigid Door Panel: All GDO doors feature a strong steel sub chassis equipped with bracing plates to ensure maximum panel rigidity and strength to withstand daily use. (Please note: Doors ordered with Retractable operating gear do not feature a back brace).
  • Reliable Locking Mechanism: Security is handled by simple but highly effective cable operated latches, which are securely engaged and disengaged via the exterior locking handle.
  • Unique Frame Colour Options: Fairly uniquely for the UK market, the factory fitted steel sub frames can be supplied in a standard white finish or fully colour matched to your chosen door panel.

Operating Gear Options

  • Canopy Gear: A fully spring assisted mechanism that provides a simple, smooth, and effective solution for manually operated doors up to 8ft wide. The door panel protrudes slightly to form a 'canopy' when open, leaving the maximum drive through width.
  • Retractable Gear: Designed to run on smooth polymer rollers within suspended horizontal tracks. This mechanism retracts the door fully into the garage and is the perfect, recommended choice if you plan to automate the door with an electric remote control operator.

The UK's Widest Colour Range

Personalise your garage door with an industry leading selection of 32 factory finished, classic low gloss solid colours. Whether you want a seamless match with your front door and windows, or a striking architectural contrast, we offer an unrivalled palette.

Pre-Installation Checks

Before beginning, measure the overall size of the door and the pre-fitted steel frame to confirm it will fit your opening. Remember that a steel sub-frame cannot be trimmed down, so the structural opening must be large enough to accommodate the entire unit. Check that your opening is square and that there is adequate space inside the garage for the door to open fully without obstruction.

Positioning the Frame

With the help of a second person, offer the door and its pre-assembled frame into the brickwork opening and use wedges to hold it firmly in place. Use a spirit level to ensure the top frame header is perfectly horizontal and that both side legs are completely plumb. Keeping the frame perfectly square is critical to prevent the door panel from binding or catching during operation.

Fixing the Steel Sub-Frame

Once you are happy with the level and positioning, secure the steel frame to your structural brickwork or blockwork. Depending on the specific fitting kit provided, this is typically done by attaching the supplied angled fixing brackets to the frame. Drill the appropriate holes into the masonry and anchor the frame securely using coach screws to ensure it cannot twist or move.

Installing Tracks (Retractable Gear Only)

If you have ordered a door with retractable operating gear, you must install the horizontal track system. Connect the horizontal tracks to the top corners of the door frame and secure the rear sections to your garage ceiling or joists using the supplied supporting hangers. Ensure these tracks are completely level and run parallel to one another for a smooth operation.

Finishing and Testing

Install the exterior handle and locking pack according to the provided instructions. Once the handle is fitted, carefully remove any factory transit packaging, and open the door to ensure it moves freely without sticking. Finally, apply a bead of exterior-grade silicone sealant around the outside edges of the frame to protect against the weather.

The door must be kept in a clean condition and free from impact damage.

Measuring Your Purpose-Made Door

When ordering a purpose-made steel up and over garage door, taking accurate measurements is essential to ensure a perfect fit. Because these doors are built to your exact specifications, getting the sizing right eliminates the need for unsightly timber infills or packing pieces.

If in doubt on any aspect of measuring or ordering, then please call or email us. We are here to help and ensure you get the correct size door.

The Ordering Protocol

These purpose-made doors are ordered based on the internal steel sub-frame dimension, which represents the clear drive-through space. The factory-fitted steel sub-frame is 50mm wide. Because of this, the total physical footprint of the unit will be larger than your specified ordering size:

  • Overall Frame Width: Ordering width plus 100mm (50mm for the left frame and 50mm for the right frame).
  • Overall Frame Height: Ordering height plus 50mm (50mm for the top frame crossbar).

* Please be aware that with the retractable operating mechanism, you will lose some drive-through width because of the pivot arm section and door lifting arms - this is the same with ANY retractable up and over door mechanism across all brands.

How to Measure the Opening

Start by measuring the width of your structural brickwork opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Note down the smallest measurement to use as your working dimension. Next, measure the height from the floor to the underside of the lintel in multiple places, again recording the shortest measurement. Finally, check that the opening is square and the floor is level, as uneven surfaces can complicate the installation.

Sizes for Fitting Between

If you are installing the door and frame within the brick tunnel, the overall frame size must be slightly smaller than the opening to allow for a fitting tolerance. A standard installation clearance is typically 10mm off the total width and 10mm off the total height.

  • Find your overall dimensions: Deduct 10mm from your smallest opening width and 10mm from your smallest opening height.
  • Find your ordering size: Subtract an additional 100mm from your new overall width, and 50mm from your new overall height to get the internal frame ordering dimension.

Sizes for Fitting Behind

If you are installing the door on the inside face of the garage, the steel frame is typically hidden completely behind the brickwork.

  • Find your ordering size: Your ordering size (the internal frame dimension) should generally match your structural brickwork opening size exactly with a little bit of tolerance for the door panel to pass through your structural opening, especially if it isn't square.
  • The frame will overlap the inside face of the garage, so you must ensure you have at least 50mm of clear headroom and 50mm of clear space on each side inside the garage to accommodate it.
