Garador Sutton Steel Up and Over Door in Traffic White
The Look of Side Hinged Doors with Up and Over Convenience
The Garador Sutton offers a clever visual twist on the standard up and over garage door. Its pressed steel panel is laid out to replicate the traditional appearance of a pair of vertical side hinged doors. A distinct horizontal cross header spans the top section, sitting above two symmetrical banks of narrow vertical ribs. This gives the illusion of two side opening timber or steel doors, but with all the ease, balance and overhead operation of a modern one piece up and over door.
It is an ideal choice for character cottages, period semi detached homes and traditional brick garages where real side hinged doors would swing out too far over a short driveway or foul a parked car. The dividing vertical styling breaks up the overall width of the opening, giving the frontage more architectural interest than a plain, full face vertical rib.
The door leaf is pressed from high grade galvanised steel built inside a rigid box section chassis for long term panel stability. It is supplied factory finished in durable Traffic White (RAL 9016) polyester powder coat, so it is fully weather protected from day one with no need for initial priming or painting on site.
* This listing is for the standard Traffic White finish. If you want to match heritage colours or darker architectural fittings, the Sutton is also available across 18 factory powder coated colour options on a separate listing, as well as in double door sizes.
Sizes and Mechanism Options
The Sutton single door is produced in 12 standard ordering sizes, covering three popular heights and four standard opening widths.
Available heights:
- 6ft 4in high (1931mm)
- 6ft 6in high (1981mm)
- 7ft 0in high (2136mm)
Available widths across all three heights:
- 7ft 0in wide (2134mm)
- 7ft 5in wide (2259mm)
- 7ft 6in wide (2284mm)
- 8ft 0in wide (2439mm)
Every size listed can be ordered with either manual canopy lifting gear or tracked retractable lifting gear. These dimensions are Garador nominal ordering references, so please consult the Measure tab to verify your frame and aperture requirements before ordering.
Canopy or Retractable Lifting Gear
With canopy gear, an overhead zinc coated torsion spring and cast alloy cable drums counterbalance the door leaf within the frame uprights. When fully open, roughly one third of the door projects outward past the brickwork, forming an overhead canopy. Because there are no tracks running back into the garage, your ceiling remains clear for overhead storage or loft ladders.
With retractable gear, the door leaf rolls completely into the garage on horizontal overhead tracks hung from the ceiling or high side walls. Supported by side mounted spring cassettes, retractable gear provides exceptionally smooth travel and is the natural mechanism to choose if you intend to add an electric remote control operator.
* Both canopy and retractable doors swing outward at the base as they begin to open, so always allow space on your driveway in front of the garage.
For narrower brick openings, you can also specify optional Retractable Plus gear. This uses specially curved lifting arms and lower spring brackets that keep the drive through opening clear at vehicle wing mirror height.
Factory Steel Sub Frame, Handles and Security
We always recommend ordering your Sutton door with a factory pre fitted steel fixing frame. A factory steel frame matches the door panel perfectly, provides consistent weather margins, and will never rot, warp or twist like a timber frame. If you already have a sound, plumb and square timber frame in place, the door can also be supplied unframed to fit directly into your existing opening.
Manual doors are supplied as standard with a black nylon handle set and secure two point bottom slam latching operated by a euro profile cylinder. For higher physical resistance against break in attempts, an optional four point security locking kit can be added to manual doors, giving you two extra locking latches at the top corners of the door leaf.
Electric Remote Control Automation
Automating a retractable Sutton door is very straightforward using a Garamatic electric operator. The operator boom mounts to the garage ceiling and pulls the door open smoothly at the touch of a button, featuring soft start and soft stop motion, automatic obstacle safety reversal and built in motor locking.
If your garage has no other entrance or pedestrian side door, remember to order an emergency external release kit so you can disengage the electric drive manually from outside during a power cut.
To start, choose your door ordering width and height along with your chosen canopy or retractable lifting mechanism from the drop down menu options. These figures refer to the internal ordering reference sizes, so remember to allow for your fixing sub frame when measuring between your brickwork opening. See measure tab for overall dimensions
1. Choose a Factory Fitted Steel Fixing Frame
We always recommend ordering your door with a factory pre-fitted steel fixing frame. Choosing a steel frame ensures the door leaf arrives already hung and aligned with tight, factory-set tolerances all the way round, saving significant installation time on site. The steel frame is powder coated in matching white, completely eliminating the rot, twisting and maintenance of a traditional timber sub frame.
The profile width of the steel sub frame depends on the operating gear selected:
- Canopy gear steel frame: Uses a 55mm wide by 40mm deep box section profile on both uprights.
- Retractable gear steel frame: Uses a 75mm wide by 40mm deep box section profile on both uprights to accommodate the retractable pivot arms.

* If you are fitting to an existing timber frame that is completely sound, plumb and square, the door can also be supplied unframed to fit directly into your existing wooden sub frame.
2. Choose a Handle Option
All doors are supplied with a practical black nylon handle set as standard. If you want to complement your property's exterior fittings or front door ironmongery, you can upgrade to a high quality diecast metal handle finished in white, brass effect or chrome effect.

3. Choose Extra Security Locking (Manual Doors Only)
Standard manual doors feature reliable two-point bottom locking catches operated by the exterior handle and key cylinder. For increased physical security against forced entry, you can upgrade to a factory fitted 4-point locking rod system.
This upgrade adds two additional steel locking rods and spring-loaded slam latches into the top corners of the door leaf. When paired with a factory steel fixing frame, the frame's steel slam strips and protective internal corner plates shield the latch points from external lever attack.
4. Choose a Remote Control Electric Operator
For effortless push button opening, add a Garamatic electric operator to a retractable door. Supplied with two remote hand transmitters, it features smooth soft start and soft stop ramping, automatic obstacle safety reversal, an internal manual emergency release cord and integrated LED courtesy lighting with low standby power consumption.
The package includes a short K boom suitable for standard door heights up to 2500mm.
Emergency External Release (Electric Doors)
An emergency external manual release kit is essential if your garage has no other pedestrian side door or secondary entrance. It connects a mechanical release cable from the operator towing carriage to the door handle or a dedicated key barrel, allowing you to disengage the motor drive from outside and open the door manually in the event of a power cut.
Optional De-Latch Security Locking Kit
When an electric operator is fitted to a retractable door, the standard manual locking latches are disconnected and the motor boom holds the door closed at the top. The optional de-latch kit reconnects the bottom mechanical latches directly to the operator carriage via a release cable. The latches automatically release when opening and engage back into the frame on closing, giving you three point locking security.
* De-latch kits are suitable for retractable doors only and cannot be used with canopy gear. Please call or email our technical sales team to check operator compatibility, get a price and add this option to your order.
Construction & Finish
The Garador Sutton is manufactured from high grade galvanised steel built into a rigid steel box section chassis. The panel layout features a distinct horizontal top header section above two symmetrical banks of narrow vertical ribs, creating the appearance of traditional side hinged doors within a one piece up and over panel. The outer face is completely rivet free and is protected with a factory applied polyester powder coat finish in Traffic White (RAL 9016), requiring no initial painting on site.
White (RAL 9016) doors are supplied unwrapped as standard. Factory poly-wrapping is available as an optional extra for transit protection.
Available Standard Sizes
The Sutton single door is available in 12 standard ordering sizes across three heights, offered with either canopy or retractable gear:
- Height 1931mm (6ft 4in): Available in widths 2134mm (7064), 2259mm (7564), 2284mm (7664) and 2439mm (8064).
- Height 1981mm (6ft 6in): Available in widths 2134mm (7066), 2259mm (7566), 2284mm (7666) and 2439mm (8066).
- Height 2136mm (7ft 0in): Available in widths 2134mm (7070), 2259mm (7570), 2284mm (7670) and 2439mm (8070).
* These dimensions refer to the internal ordering reference sizes. Please consult the Measure tab for overall steel frame dimensions.
Canopy Gear (Single Doors Only)
Canopy gear uses vertical jamb tracks and an overhead zinc-coated torsion spring with cast alloy cable drums to counterbalance the door leaf. Because all mechanical components are housed within the frame, no horizontal tracks run back into the garage, leaving the ceiling completely clear for storage.
When fully open, approximately one third of the door leaf projects outside the garage opening, forming an overhead canopy.
Single canopy doors include:
- Anti-drop safety device to prevent the door falling in the event of spring or cable failure
- Zinc-coated torsion spring for long term corrosion resistance
- Cast alloy cable drums and high tensile steel cables
- Two-point mechanical slam-latch locking
- Black exterior handle and internal latch release
Nominal drive-through clearance reductions:
- Width: opening width minus 40mm
- Height: opening height minus 130mm
Retractable Gear
Retractable gear pulls the door leaf fully inside the garage along horizontal overhead tracks supported by ceiling or high wall brackets. Counterbalancing is handled by multiple-spring cassettes mounted on each side arm. Retractable gear is the recommended mechanism if you plan to automate the door with an electric operator.
Single retractable doors include:
- Multiple-spring cassettes with protective pivot-arm covers to prevent finger trapping
- Secure open parking position to prevent accidental closing
- Two-point mechanical bottom locking
- Black exterior handle
Nominal drive-through clearance reductions:
- Width: opening width minus 105mm
- Height: opening height minus 110mm
* These figures are nominal gear deductions, not structural opening tolerances. Always allow for your fixing sub frame separately.
Optional Retractable Plus Gear
Retractable Plus gear features specially curved lifting arms and lower spring brackets that provide additional drive-through width at vehicle wing-mirror height. It is ideal on narrower driveways and single garage openings where clearance between your vehicle and the door lifting arms is critical.
Available on all Sutton single retractable sizes across 1931mm, 1981mm and 2136mm heights.
Steel Fixing Frame Specifications
When ordered with a factory pre-fitted steel box section frame, the profile dimensions are:
- Canopy steel frame: 55mm wide uprights × 40mm deep box section.
- Retractable steel frame: 75mm wide uprights × 40mm deep box section.
Mechanical Locking Upgrades
All manual doors come standard with two-point mechanical locking operated via the exterior handle and euro profile key cylinder.
- Optional 4-point locking upgrade: Available for manual doors at an extra charge. Adds steel locking rods and corner latches to the top corners of the door panel, providing four-corner physical latching against forced entry.
Optional De-Latch Security Locking Kit
When an electric operator is fitted to a retractable door, the manual locking catches are normally disconnected and the motor carriage holds the door closed at the top. An optional de-latch kit links the bottom mechanical catches directly to the operator carriage via a release cable, automatically releasing them on opening and locking them into the frame on closing for combined motor and physical latch security.
* De-latch kits are suitable for retractable doors only and cannot be fitted to canopy gear. Please email or phone our technical sales team to confirm compatibility with your operator and add this kit to your order.
Installation Guide: Garador Up and Over Garage Doors
Installing a Garador up and over garage door is a straightforward job for a competent tradesperson or experienced DIYer, especially when supplied with a factory steel fixing frame. How the door installs depends on whether you have selected canopy or retractable gear, whether you are fitting a single or double-width door, and whether you are fitting into a new steel sub frame or an existing timber frame.
Factory Steel Sub Frame vs Existing Timber Frame
With a factory steel frame: Single canopy and single retractable doors ordered with a steel frame arrive factory pre-hung as a complete unit. The frame is pre-matched to the door panel with consistent tolerances all round, eliminating the risk of timber rot, warping, or seasonal movement. Installation simply involves offering the complete pre-assembled unit into the opening, squaring it up, and fixing it through the pre-drilled points.
With an existing timber sub frame: If you are hanging a door into an existing timber frame, make sure the timber is completely sound, square, and structurally rigid. The internal width and height between the timber frame legs and head must match the door's nominal ordering size exactly. Any twist or out-of-square in a timber frame will cause the door leaf to bind, rub, or fail to latch properly.
* Note on double doors: Double retractable garage doors (over 10ft wide) are supplied with the steel sub frame in kit form rather than pre-hung. The steel frame is assembled and fixed into the opening first, and the door panel and horizontal track gear are installed into it on site.
Canopy Gear: What to Expect
Canopy doors are ideal when you want to keep the garage ceiling completely clear. The entire operating mechanism — vertical jamb tracks, overhead zinc-coated torsion spring, and cast alloy cable drums — is contained entirely within the door frame.
- No rear tracks: There are no horizontal tracks extending into the garage, so you do not need to fix anything to the garage ceiling or rafters.
- Headroom: Ensure you have sufficient headroom above the frame head for the overhead torsion spring assembly (minimum 55mm to 65mm depending on whether fitting between or behind the aperture).
- Level floor essential: The door frame uprights must sit on a firm, level base. If the floor slopes, the door leaf will not close down evenly across the bottom.
Retractable Gear: What to Expect
Retractable gear pulls the door leaf fully inside the garage on horizontal overhead tracks, counterbalanced by multiple side-spring cassettes on each side. It is the natural choice if you intend to fit an electric operator.
- Internal depth & ceiling fixings: The horizontal tracks run back into the garage slightly further than the full door height. You must have clear, unobstructed space along the ceiling or high side walls to mount the rear track suspension brackets.
- Squaring the tracks: When fixing the horizontal overhead tracks, measure across the diagonals between the tracks and the front frame. Both tracks must be dead level and completely square to the front frame; if the tracks are splayed or out of square, the roller wheels will bind and the door will stick when opening.
Core Installation Steps (Single Pre-Framed Door)
- Check the opening: Measure the structural brickwork opening across the top, middle, and bottom, and vertically on both sides. Check that the opening is square by checking diagonal measurements, and confirm that the floor is level across the threshold.
- Position the frame: Offer the pre-assembled door and frame into the opening. Support it safely with props or wedges so that the frame head is level and the side jambs are completely plumb.
- Check frame diagonals: Measure diagonally from the top corner to the opposite bottom corner in both directions. The two diagonal measurements must be identical before fixing.
- Fix the frame: Secure the frame into the surrounding masonry through the prepared fixing points or anchor brackets using heavy-duty frame fixings. Do not over-tighten fixings initially; tighten progressively while checking that the frame jambs remain straight and do not bow.
- Hang horizontal tracks (Retractable only): Lift and support the overhead horizontal tracks, secure them to the top corners of the front frame, and fix the rear suspension brackets into sound ceiling joists or side walls, ensuring the tracks are level and square.
- Release transit packing: Once the frame is securely fastened, carefully remove transit brackets, safety transit screws, and any protective packaging securing the springs or cables, following the manufacturer's sequence.
- Test manual operation: Operate the door by hand. It should move smoothly without dragging, binding, or shuddering, and sit balanced when released halfway. Check that the mechanical latches align and engage cleanly into the frame keeps.
Installing an Electric Operator
Automating an up and over door adds convenience and security, but the operator must be installed correctly to work safely with the door's balance mechanism.
- Door condition comes first: An electric operator will not fix a badly fitted, sticking, or unbalanced garage door. The door must open and close smoothly and balance properly by hand before an operator is installed.
- Automating retractable doors: Retractable doors are designed for straightforward automation. A standard ceiling-mounted boom operator (such as a Garador GaraMatic) is installed down the centre of the garage ceiling. The towing arm connects directly from the operator carriage to the top of the door leaf. Standard bottom mechanical locking catches are typically bypassed, as the motor carriage positively locks the door closed at the top. Alternatively, an optional de-latch kit can be fitted to retain the bottom mechanical catches.
- Automating canopy doors: Because a canopy door pivots outward at the top and runs in vertical tracks, it cannot be pulled straight back by a standard operator boom. You must fit a canopy bow-arm converter (or a dedicated canopy lifting device) to the back of the door panel. The bow arm transfers the horizontal pull of the operator boom into the vertical and swinging motion needed to lift the canopy door. Note that a traditional bow-arm converter reduces the drive-through clearance height in the centre by roughly 100mm to 130mm when open.
- Fit an emergency external release if required: If your garage has no other pedestrian side door or entrance, you must install an emergency external manual release kit. In the event of a power cut or motor failure, this allows you to disconnect the electric drive carriage from outside using a key and open the door manually.
- Safety limits and force testing: After installing the motor, set the open and close travel limits carefully so the door closes snugly without forcing the panel down onto the floor. Always test the automatic safety reverse function by placing a solid obstacle on the floor to verify that the door reverses immediately on contact.
