Why Cedar Is Ideal for a Garage Door
The range on this page is built with Western Red Cedar, one of the most naturally durable softwoods available for exterior joinery. It is chosen for garage doors because it copes with the British weather better than most timbers while staying light enough to lift smoothly overhead.
Natural resistance to rot and insects
Cedar heartwood contains natural oils and extractives that act as a built in preservative, helping the timber resist fungal decay and insect attack.
Stable in changing weather
Cedar shrinks, swells, twists and cups far less than many hardwoods such as oak. That helps the door keep its shape through wet winters and dry summers.
Light but strong
Cedar has an excellent strength to weight ratio. A lighter door panel places less load on springs and gear, giving a smoother manual lift and suiting automation.
Warm, natural insulation
Timber is a far better natural insulator than steel, and cedar is one of the better performers. It is not a thermally rated door, but it feels warmer and quieter than single skin steel.
Takes stain beautifully
Cedar is low in resin and pitch, so stains and coatings bond well. Its grain ranges from light amber to deep honey brown, and no two doors look quite the same.
A renewable choice
Western Red Cedar is grown in managed forests in western Canada and the north western United States. Cedar Door holds chain of custody certification so its timber can be traced back to certified sources.

Cedar Door Timber Up and Over Doors

Cedar Door has been making solid cedar garage doors in Derbyshire for over 30 years. Each door is made in kiln dried Western Red Cedar using traditional door construction. Solid cedar stiles and rails are joined with mortice and tenon joints, then glued and wedged, the strongest joint used in door making. The boards or panels are glue bonded into this solid cedar frame, and every component is hand matched to balance the natural colour and grain.

Cedar Door Factory Treatments
Every Cedar Door is protected before it leaves the factory, and you can choose to have it fully finished so it is ready to enjoy as soon as it is fitted.
Base coat as standard
All Cedar timber doors and components are fully dipped in Remmers Light Oak stain. This dip coat is a temporary seal for transit and installation only, lasting around six weeks after fitting. A full Remmers top coat system must be applied to all surfaces immediately after installation.
Remmers factory finish (optional)
For the best long term protection, choose Remmers factory finishing. The door is fully coated in the factory with a microporous woodstain system that lets the timber breathe while protecting it from moisture and UV. The result is a hard wearing satin finish that typically lasts up to 5 years before recoating, depending on how exposed the door is.
Remmers colours: Light Oak, Golden Oak, Medium Oak, Dark Oak, Teak, Rosewood, Mahogany, Walnut and Ebony.
Matching subframes
Cedar doors can be supplied with a softwood or hardwood timber subframe, made with mortice and tenon joints and supplied unassembled with a dip coat finish. The frame can also be factory finished to match your door colour.

Buying Advice for Timber Doors
Factory finish or base coat?
A factory finish is applied in controlled conditions to every face and edge of the door, giving better protection than most site applied coatings. If you choose base coat, the full top coat system must be applied straight after installation. Leaving a base coated door unprotected can lead to water marking, splitting and movement that is not covered by the manufacturer.
Choosing your colour
Cedar is a natural material, so colour and grain vary from door to door and printed swatches are a guide only. On south facing elevations or in constant direct sun, a lighter shade is usually the better choice, as dark colours absorb more heat and can cause the timber to move.
Drive through height
Timber doors are thicker than steel, and when open the door panel sits within the opening. As a guide, a solid Cedar Door up to 2438mm wide reduces the clear opening height by about 80mm, rising to about 120mm at 3040mm wide and 155mm at 4870mm wide. Retractable gear gives the best drive through width at door mirror height.
Natural timber character
Small knots, grain variation and slight seasonal movement are natural features of cedar and do not affect the long term performance of the door. Wide timber doors may deflect slightly when open, which is normal for timber up and over doors.
Storage and delivery
Cedar doors arrive shrink wrapped. Keep the wrapping on until just before coating, store the door upright, and keep it out of direct sunlight and rain until it is fitted. Please inspect your door in daylight on delivery and report any issues within 48 hours.
Ongoing care
Wash the door down with mild soapy water once or twice a year and check the finish for wear, particularly on the bottom rail and weather facing surfaces. Recoat as soon as the finish begins to dull or thin, using a compatible product, to keep the cedar looking its best.
Automation
Cedar timber up and over doors can be automated with an electric operator, ideally with retractable gear. Ask our team which operator suits your door size and weight.
Timber Door FAQs
Is cedar a hardwood or a softwood?
Western Red Cedar is a softwood, but it is naturally far more durable outdoors than most softwoods and many hardwoods, thanks to its natural oils.
Do I have to stain a cedar garage door?
Yes. Cedar supplies doors with a base coat that is temporary protection only. Choose a factory finish or apply a full top coat immediately after installation.
Can I get a timber door to fit a non standard opening?
Yes. Every Cedar Door is made to measure at no extra cost.
Which is better, a steel or timber subframe?
A Cedar Door softwood or hardwood timber frame suits traditional properties and can be finished to match the door.
