Garador Horizon Steel Up and Over Door in 19 Colours

Horizontal Ribs for a Wider, Modern Look

The Garador Horizon has closely spaced horizontal ribs running across the steel panel. These lines emphasise the width of the opening and give the door a different appearance from the vertical ribs of the Carlton.

It works well with newer homes, modernised bungalows and properties with horizontal cladding or rendered fronts. The ribbed pattern also coordinates naturally with brick courses and wide window frames.

Colour makes a noticeable difference to the finished appearance. Anthracite Grey, Slate Grey and Jet Black give the ribs stronger definition, while lighter greys and Light Ivory create a softer look against render or stone.

The door is constructed from galvanised steel with a factory applied powder-coated finish and a steel box section chassis supporting the panel. No initial painting is required, although regular cleaning and maintenance will help keep the finish and operating gear in good condition.

* The Horizon is also available through our separate Traffic White and White Special Offer listings, as well as in double-width versions. Check the relevant listing for current prices and available sizes.

Use the Measure tab to find the ordering size code and corresponding internal timber-frame or overall steel-frame dimensions. Do not use a simple feet-to-millimetres conversion to calculate the required frame size.

* Purpose-made sizes are also available. Please contact us with your opening dimensions if a standard size does not suit.

Can't Find Your Size in the Online Shop?

We are continually updating the sizes available to order online, so not every size shown in the Measure tab will necessarily appear in the shop's drop-down selections.

If your required size is listed but is not showing in the online shop, please call or email us for a price and confirmation of availability. Let us know the ordering size code, your preferred colour, and whether you require canopy or retractable gear.

* A size missing from the online selections does not necessarily mean it is unavailable. Please check with us before choosing a different size.

Canopy or Retractable Gear

Canopy gear uses vertical side tracks and an overhead torsion spring to counterbalance the door. There are no horizontal tracks extending back into the garage, making it a practical choice for manual operation. When fully open, approximately one-third of the door projects outside the opening. An anti-drop safety device is included.

Retractable gear allows the panel to travel back into the garage on horizontal overhead tracks supported from suitable wall or ceiling positions. It is the more straightforward choice if you intend to fit an electric operator, but clear space is needed inside the garage for the tracks and their supports.

* Both mechanisms swing outwards during opening. Leave sufficient space in front of the garage for the door to move without contacting a parked vehicle.

Optional Retractable Plus gear uses modified lifting arms and bottom spring brackets to provide more usable drive-through width at wing-mirror height. It is worth considering when clearance between your vehicle and the standard lifting arms is tight.

Steel Fixing Frame, Handles and Locking

We recommend a factory-fitted steel fixing frame for consistent operating clearances around the panel and a more straightforward installation. Check the selected frame finish and overall dimensions when ordering.

The standard single-door steel frame has 55mm-wide side sections for canopy gear and 75mm-wide side sections for retractable gear. Use the overall dimensions in the Measure tab rather than calculating the framed size from these section widths alone.

The door can also be supplied for installation into a suitable timber fixing frame. An existing frame must be sound, square and correctly sized.

Two-point mechanical locking is standard for manual operation. An optional four-point locking upgrade adds further locking points and is available at an additional charge for manually operated doors.

A black nylon handle is supplied as standard. Optional metal handle finishes allow you to coordinate with other exterior fittings. Chrome effect provides a contrasting detail against grey or black, while brass effect works well with warmer colours. Check the Options tab for the finishes offered.

Electric Operation

A retractable Horizon can be automated using a compatible Garamatic electric operator. The operator and boom must suit the selected door size and installation space. Canopy automation requires compatible bow-arm conversion equipment and additional clearance checks.

An emergency external release is essential if an automated garage has no other entrance. It allows you to disengage the operator from outside and open the door manually during a power cut.

An optional de-latch security locking kit allows the mechanical locking catches on a compatible retractable door to work alongside the electric operator, releasing when the door opens and re-engaging when it closes.

* Please email or call us to confirm de-latch kit compatibility, obtain a price and arrange to add it to your order.

To order, choose your required door ordering width and height from the drop-down sizes. These dimensions refer to the internal ordering frame size. If you are fitting between the structural brickwork aperture, remember to allow for your fixing sub frame and fitting tolerances when working out your opening dimensions.

Colour Finish & Packaging

The Garador Horizon features an attractive horizontal ribbed panel pressed from high-grade galvanised steel. The 19 colour options are finished in a tough, factory-applied polyester powder coat, ensuring a durable, low-maintenance finish that needs no further painting on site.

Unlike standard white doors which are supplied unwrapped, all 18 optional coloured doors are factory shrink-wrapped for transit protection and include a colour-matched touch-up paint stick as standard for minor site marks.

Factory-Fitted Steel Fixing Frame

We strongly recommend ordering your door with a factory-fitted steel sub frame. A steel frame provides precise, consistent clearances around the door panel, speeds up site installation, and will never rot, twist, or need periodic staining like timber. When ordered with a coloured door, the exterior face of the steel frame is powder-coated in the matching door colour.

Handle Options

All doors are supplied with a practical black nylon handle as standard. If you want to match external door ironmongery, you can upgrade to an optional diecast metal design handle in white, brass effect, or chrome effect.

Garador Handle Options

Extra Security 4-Point Locking (Manual Doors Only)

Standard manual doors feature reliable two-point latching into the bottom corners. You can upgrade to a factory-fitted 4-point locking system for extra physical security. This kit adds steel locking bars and spring catches into the top corners as well. When combined with a factory steel fixing frame, the built-in slam strips and corner plates protect the latching points against forced entry.

De-Latch Security Locking Kit (Automated Retractable Doors)

When an electric operator is added to a retractable door, the manual locking catches are usually disengaged so the motor can cycle freely. An optional de-latch kit links the bottom mechanical catches directly to the operator carriage via a release cable. The catches release automatically on opening and lock back into the frame on closing, giving you three-point physical locking alongside the motor drive.

* De-latch kits are suitable for retractable doors only and cannot be fitted to canopy gear. Please phone or email our team to confirm compatibility with your operator and add this to your order.

Emergency External Release

An emergency release kit is essential if your garage does not have a separate pedestrian side door. It connects a release cable to either the outside door handle or a separate key barrel, allowing you to manually disengage the operator carriage from outside and open the door during a power cut.

Remote Control Electric Automation

For smooth automation on retractable doors, we offer the Garamatic electric operator series. Supplied with two remote hand transmitters, it features smooth soft-start and soft-stop ramping, automatic obstacle safety reversal, an internal manual release cord, and an integrated multi-LED courtesy light for low energy consumption.

* Supplied with an operator boom suitable for doors up to 2500mm high. Retractable doors are ideal for automation; canopy doors require an additional bow-arm converter or are best left manual.

Construction & Finish

The Garador Horizon is manufactured from high grade galvanised steel featuring a horizontally ribbed panel pressed into a rigid steel box chassis. The panel has a tough, factory applied polyester powder-coated paint finish that requires no initial painting and very little ongoing maintenance.

Choose from 19 factory powder coated colour options:

  • Traffic White (RAL 9016)
  • Jet Black (RAL 9005)
  • Terra Brown (RAL 8028)
  • Window Grey (RAL 7040)
  • Agate Grey (RAL 7038)
  • Light Grey (RAL 7035)
  • Stone Grey (RAL 7030)
  • Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016)
  • Slate Grey (RAL 7015)
  • Fir Green (RAL 6009)
  • Moss Green (RAL 6005)
  • Pigeon Blue (RAL 5014)
  • Steel Blue (RAL 5011)
  • Signal Blue (RAL 5005)
  • Ruby Red (RAL 3003)
  • Light Ivory (RAL 1015)
  • Chartwell Green (BS 4800)
  • Golden Brown
  • Burgundy Brown

Standard Traffic White (RAL 9016) doors are supplied unwrapped. All 18 optional coloured doors are factory shrink-wrapped for transit protection and include a colour-matched touch-up paint stick as standard.

Standard & Extra Locking Options

All manual Garador doors come fitted as standard with secure 2-point slam-latch locking operated by an exterior handle and euro-profile cylinder.

  • Optional 4-point locking upgrade: Available for manual doors at an extra charge. This adds steel locking rods and corner latches to the top of the door panel, providing physical four-corner latching against forced entry.

Canopy Gear (Single Doors Only)

Canopy gear uses vertical jamb tracks and an overhead torsion spring with cast alloy drums to counterbalance the door leaf. There are no horizontal tracks extending back into the garage, making canopy gear the neatest solution for manual doors where internal roof or wall clearance is limited.

When open, roughly one third of the door leaf projects outside the garage opening, forming a canopy.

Single canopy doors include:

  • Anti-drop safety device to arrest the door in the event of cable or spring failure
  • Zinc-coated torsion spring and cast alloy cable drums
  • Two-point mechanical bottom locking
  • Black exterior handle and internal latch release

Nominal drive-through clearance reductions:

  • Width: opening width minus 40mm
  • Height: opening height minus 130mm

Retractable Gear (Single & Double Doors)

Retractable gear pulls the door leaf fully inside the garage along horizontal overhead tracks supported by ceiling or wall brackets. This is the recommended mechanism if you intend to fit a remote-control electric operator.

Single retractable doors include:

  • Multi-spring cassettes with protective link-arm covers to prevent finger trapping
  • Secure open parking position to prevent uncontrolled closing
  • Two-point mechanical bottom locking
  • Black exterior handle

Nominal drive-through clearance reductions:

  • Width: opening width minus 105mm
  • Single-door height: opening height minus 110mm
  • Double-door height: opening height minus 140mm

* Clearance figures are nominal gear deductions, not structural aperture deductions. Always allow separately for your fixing sub frame.

Optional Retractable Plus Gear

Retractable Plus gear features specially curved lifting arms and lower spring brackets that clear drive-through space at vehicle wing-mirror height. It is well worth choosing on narrower single garage openings where drive-through clearance is tight.

Available on door heights of 1931mm, 1981mm, and 2136mm, and for door widths up to 2439mm (8'0").

Optional De-Latch Security Locking Kit

When an electric operator is fitted to a retractable door, the manual locking catches are normally disconnected and the motor carriage holds the door closed. A de-latch kit links the bottom mechanical latches directly to the operator carriage via a release cable, automatically unlocking them when opening and engaging them back into the frame when closing for combined motor and mechanical security.

* De-latch kits are suitable for retractable doors only and cannot be fitted to canopy gear.

Installation Guide: Garador Up and Over Garage Doors

Installing a Garador up and over garage door is a straightforward job for a competent tradesperson or experienced DIYer, especially when supplied with a factory steel fixing frame. How the door installs depends on whether you have selected canopy or retractable gear, whether you are fitting a single or double-width door, and whether you are fitting into a new steel sub frame or an existing timber frame.

Factory Steel Sub Frame vs Existing Timber Frame

With a factory steel frame: Single canopy and single retractable doors ordered with a steel frame arrive factory pre-hung as a complete unit. The frame is pre-matched to the door panel with consistent tolerances all round, eliminating the risk of timber rot, warping, or seasonal movement. Installation simply involves offering the complete pre-assembled unit into the opening, squaring it up, and fixing it through the pre-drilled points.

With an existing timber sub frame: If you are hanging a door into an existing timber frame, make sure the timber is completely sound, square, and structurally rigid. The internal width and height between the timber frame legs and head must match the door's nominal ordering size exactly. Any twist or out-of-square in a timber frame will cause the door leaf to bind, rub, or fail to latch properly.

* Note on double doors: Double retractable garage doors (over 10ft wide) are supplied with the steel sub frame in kit form rather than pre-hung. The steel frame is assembled and fixed into the opening first, and the door panel and horizontal track gear are installed into it on site.

Canopy Gear: What to Expect

Canopy doors are ideal when you want to keep the garage ceiling completely clear. The entire operating mechanism — vertical jamb tracks, overhead zinc-coated torsion spring, and cast alloy cable drums — is contained entirely within the door frame.

  • No rear tracks: There are no horizontal tracks extending into the garage, so you do not need to fix anything to the garage ceiling or rafters.
  • Headroom: Ensure you have sufficient headroom above the frame head for the overhead torsion spring assembly (minimum 55mm to 65mm depending on whether fitting between or behind the aperture).
  • Level floor essential: The door frame uprights must sit on a firm, level base. If the floor slopes, the door leaf will not close down evenly across the bottom.

Retractable Gear: What to Expect

Retractable gear pulls the door leaf fully inside the garage on horizontal overhead tracks, counterbalanced by multiple side-spring cassettes on each side. It is the natural choice if you intend to fit an electric operator.

  • Internal depth & ceiling fixings: The horizontal tracks run back into the garage slightly further than the full door height. You must have clear, unobstructed space along the ceiling or high side walls to mount the rear track suspension brackets.
  • Squaring the tracks: When fixing the horizontal overhead tracks, measure across the diagonals between the tracks and the front frame. Both tracks must be dead level and completely square to the front frame; if the tracks are splayed or out of square, the roller wheels will bind and the door will stick when opening.

Core Installation Steps (Single Pre-Framed Door)

  1. Check the opening: Measure the structural brickwork opening across the top, middle, and bottom, and vertically on both sides. Check that the opening is square by checking diagonal measurements, and confirm that the floor is level across the threshold.
  2. Position the frame: Offer the pre-assembled door and frame into the opening. Support it safely with props or wedges so that the frame head is level and the side jambs are completely plumb.
  3. Check frame diagonals: Measure diagonally from the top corner to the opposite bottom corner in both directions. The two diagonal measurements must be identical before fixing.
  4. Fix the frame: Secure the frame into the surrounding masonry through the prepared fixing points or anchor brackets using heavy-duty frame fixings. Do not over-tighten fixings initially; tighten progressively while checking that the frame jambs remain straight and do not bow.
  5. Hang horizontal tracks (Retractable only): Lift and support the overhead horizontal tracks, secure them to the top corners of the front frame, and fix the rear suspension brackets into sound ceiling joists or side walls, ensuring the tracks are level and square.
  6. Release transit packing: Once the frame is securely fastened, carefully remove transit brackets, safety transit screws, and any protective packaging securing the springs or cables, following the manufacturer's sequence.
  7. Test manual operation: Operate the door by hand. It should move smoothly without dragging, binding, or shuddering, and sit balanced when released halfway. Check that the mechanical latches align and engage cleanly into the frame keeps.

Installing an Electric Operator

Automating an up and over door adds convenience and security, but the operator must be installed correctly to work safely with the door's balance mechanism.

  • Door condition comes first: An electric operator will not fix a badly fitted, sticking, or unbalanced garage door. The door must open and close smoothly and balance properly by hand before an operator is installed.
  • Automating retractable doors: Retractable doors are designed for straightforward automation. A standard ceiling-mounted boom operator (such as a Garador GaraMatic) is installed down the centre of the garage ceiling. The towing arm connects directly from the operator carriage to the top of the door leaf. Standard bottom mechanical locking catches are typically bypassed, as the motor carriage positively locks the door closed at the top. Alternatively, an optional de-latch kit can be fitted to retain the bottom mechanical catches.
  • Automating canopy doors: Because a canopy door pivots outward at the top and runs in vertical tracks, it cannot be pulled straight back by a standard operator boom. You must fit a canopy bow-arm converter (or a dedicated canopy lifting device) to the back of the door panel. The bow arm transfers the horizontal pull of the operator boom into the vertical and swinging motion needed to lift the canopy door. Note that a traditional bow-arm converter reduces the drive-through clearance height in the centre by roughly 100mm to 130mm when open.
  • Fit an emergency external release if required: If your garage has no other pedestrian side door or entrance, you must install an emergency external manual release kit. In the event of a power cut or motor failure, this allows you to disconnect the electric drive carriage from outside using a key and open the door manually.
  • Safety limits and force testing: After installing the motor, set the open and close travel limits carefully so the door closes snugly without forcing the panel down onto the floor. Always test the automatic safety reverse function by placing a solid obstacle on the floor to verify that the door reverses immediately on contact.

* No fitting clearance is included in the overall frame dimensions. If fitting between the brickwork, the opening must be at least 10mm wider and 5mm higher than the overall steel frame. These are total fitting allowances, not allowances per side.

If a listed size is not available in the ordering drop-downs, please email or call us to confirm availability and obtain a price.

*Fitting tolerance: No fitting clearance is included in these dimensions. If fitting between the brickwork aperture, your structural opening must be at least 10mm wider and 5mm higher than the overall frame size to allow for fitting tolerance and squareness.
