The Decograin Difference: Tough Polymer Laminate Foils
If you want the authentic look and feel of natural timber to match your home's woodgrain uPVC windows or entrance doors, Hormann's Decograin finish is the benchmark. Unlike painted wood-effect doors (such as Decopaint), which use a printed or painted pattern on the metal surface, Decograin uses a heavy-duty, multi-layer synthetic laminate foil hot-bonded directly to the exterior aluminium lath under high pressure.
This foil surface features a tactile, embossed grain texture that closely replicates natural planed timber. It is engineered with a UV-resistant protective film that guards against weathering, scratching, and fading over years of exposure:
| Decograin Finish | Visual Appearance | Matching House Features |
|---|---|---|
| Golden Oak | Warm, medium tone honey oak with authentic natural wood graining and tactile embossed texture. | Golden oak uPVC double glazing, warm timber fascias, and natural red or buff brickwork. |
| Rosewood | Rich, deep reddish brown timber reproduction with dark, pronounced grain detailing. | Rosewood or mahogany uPVC windows, traditional timber front doors, and period brick or stone properties. |
* Inside curtain and frame finish: To maintain a neat, practical appearance, the synthetic foil is applied to the outside face of the curtain slats, while the inside face of the lath is finished in a durable protective brown coating. The full hood casing and vertical side guides are factory powder-coated in complementing Terra Brown (RAL 8028) as standard.
Full Hood Protection as Standard
Every Hormann Rollmatic T Decograin door includes the complete aluminium box enclosure as standard equipment. Having the full box fitted provides practical advantages every day:
- Curtain protection: shields the coiled aluminium slats from everyday garage dust, cobwebs, and airborne debris when rolled up overhead.
- Safety enclosure: forms a solid barrier around the barrel, preventing tools, loose clothing, or fingers from being drawn into the rolling mechanism.
- Neat internal appearance: conceals the drive axle, straps, and wiring behind a smooth aluminium fascia box inside the garage.
Practical Motor Drive and Everyday Controls
The Rollmatic T uses a conventional single-phase 240V tubular motor engineered specifically for smooth, dependable daily operation. Because the motor sits inside the curtain axle, there are no bulky external motor heads protruding into your garage storage space.
Power is supplied via a pre-wired lead with a standard 3-pin UK plug, meaning you can plug it straight into an existing 13-amp socket without needing an electrician to hardwire it.
The wall-mounted receiver box features two push buttons on the front casing, allowing you to operate the door from inside the garage without reaching for your keys. You also receive two Hormann HSE 4 mini hand transmitters. These operate on Hormann's 868 MHz BiSecur radio frequency, an encrypted signal developed to stop code-grabbing and give reliable range from inside your car.
Safety Edge and Manual Override as Standard
Under current UK and European safety legislation (BS EN 13241), powered roller garage doors must detect obstructions to prevent injury or damage. The Rollmatic T achieves this with an active optical sensor integrated directly inside the hollow rubber bottom seal.
If the descending door touches a vehicle bumper, a toy, or a pet, the infrared light beam inside the rubber profile breaks. The control unit cuts power instantly and reverses the curtain to clear the obstruction.
- Standard spiral cable connection: a tough coiled cable feeds the bottom edge sensor back to the wall control unit for dependable signal transmission.
- Optional wireless safety edge: can be selected if you prefer a clean look without the visible coiled cable running up the wall.
- Internal emergency hand chain: allows you to wind the curtain up or down smoothly if there is a mains power cut.
* If your garage has no separate pedestrian side door or back door, you must order an external manual release kit so you can disengage and operate the door from outside during a power failure.
Customising Your Door Options
Before selecting your finishes and accessories, the first step on Garage Doors Online is always entering your door size. Every Hormann RollMatic T is made to measure at the factory to your exact opening dimensions at no extra charge, ensuring a neat, precise fit to your garage opening.
Choose Your Width and Height
Please pay close attention when measuring for a Hormann roller door, as the sizing method is specific to Hormann:
- Ordering width (Between Guide Width): unlike most roller garage doors on the UK market that are ordered by total overall width including guides, Hormann roller doors are ordered by the clear width in between the guide channels. When fitting behind the opening (internal face fit), your ordering width should normally match the structural brickwork opening width so the guides sit flush behind your piers. If you are fitting in-between the brickwork opening, you must subtract the guide widths (75mm each side up to 3000mm, or 105mm each side over 3000mm) from your brickwork opening to determine your ordering width.
- Ordering height (Guide Height): ordering height follows standard roller door sizing. It is the Guide Height measured from the finished floor to the top of the side guide channels (the underside of the lintel or fascia box). This ordering height does NOT include the hood cover dimensions.
- Allowing for the full hood: the 290mm full hood cover sits completely above the ordering height (guide height). For an internal face fit, you must ensure you have at least 290mm of clear headroom above the top of the side guides up to the ceiling.
* Always check your opening width and height at three points (top, middle, and bottom), using the smallest dimensions and allowing appropriate tolerance for out-of-square walls or floors.
Choose Door Colour
Select from 2 authentic Decograin synthetic laminate foil finishes applied to the exterior face of the aluminium curtain:
- Decograin Golden Oak: warm honey oak with embossed grain detailing, supplied with complementing Terra Brown side guides and full hood casing.
- Decograin Rosewood: rich, dark reddish-brown timber reproduction with pronounced grain structure, supplied with complementing Terra Brown side guides and full hood casing.
Choose Side for Motor
Select which side the tubular drive motor will be installed on, viewed from inside the garage looking outwards towards the driveway:
- Left hand side (looking from inside)
- Right hand side (looking from inside)
Choose the side closest to your existing 240V 13-amp power socket or where you intend to position your wall-mounted control box. The internal emergency hand chain mechanism will also be positioned on this same side.
Door Installation Position
Specify how the door will be fixed relative to your garage opening:
- Behind the opening (internal face fit): this is the preferred and most common installation method. The side guides fit directly to the rear face of the brickwork piers and the full hood sits behind the lintel. This setup keeps the structural opening completely clear, giving you maximum drive-through width and height for your vehicle.
- Between the opening (reveal fit): ideal when you have limited or no internal headroom or side room. The side guide channels and full hood box fit directly between the brick reveal. Keep in mind that the guides and hood will reduce your clear drive-through width and height by the dimensions of the frame and box.
Emergency External Manual Release
The RollMatic T comes with an internal emergency hand chain override as standard, which allows you to manually wind the door up or down from inside the garage during a mains power cut.
- If your garage has a side door or integral house door: you can access the garage through the pedestrian entrance during a power failure and use the standard internal hand chain override. No external release is required.
- If your garage has no secondary access door: you must select an external emergency manual release kit. This fits through your external brickwork or door fascia with a secure key-lockable barrel, allowing you to manually wind open the door from the driveway if power fails, preventing you from being locked out.

Motor Handing and Pre-Set Limits
The tubular motor is supplied fitted on the Left Hand Side as standard, when viewed from inside the garage looking out towards the driveway. A Right Hand motor position can be selected at no additional charge during ordering to suit the location of your power supply.
The Rollmatic T arrives with top and bottom travel limits pre-set at the factory to simplify installation setup. * Note: Unlike Hormann Promatic or Supramatic boom operators, bi-directional query of door position via the handset is not supported on tubular drive motors.
Safety Edge Connection Options
- Optical safety edge with spiral cable (Standard): an optical transmitter and receiver housed within the flexible hollow bottom rubber profile continuously monitors the closing threshold. If the curtain touches an obstruction, the light path is broken and the door immediately stops and reverses. A heavy-duty coiled spiral cable links the bottom profile directly to the wall control unit.
- Radio closing edge safety device (Optional): uses the same responsive optical sensors in the bottom seal, but transmits the stop/reverse signal wirelessly to a receiver integrated inside the wall control housing, removing the visible coiled lead.
Installation Configurations & Sizing Rules
The Rollmatic T can be fitted to any opening shape, whether square, arched, or angled:
- Behind the opening (Internal face fit - recommended): the side guides bolt behind the brickwork piers and the full hood box sits behind the lintel. This preserves the full clear structural opening width and height, ideal for larger vehicles and 4x4s.
- Between the opening (Reveal fit): fitted under the lintel and between the reveal piers when there is no internal headroom or pier space. The side guide widths and 290mm hood box must be deducted from your structural opening dimensions.
- Externally face fitted: fitted to the exterior face of the building when there is no internal headroom or side clearance inside the garage. * Note: Installing externally reverses the curtain rolling direction and flips the motor handing orientation when viewed from outside.
* Important measuring rule: Hormann roller garage doors are ordered by the clear in-between guide width, not the overall width including guides. The ordering height is the guide height only, excluding the 290mm full hood cover. Always ensure you have adequate physical space on site for both the side guides and the hood box.
* Sun exposure guideline: Darker woodgrain finishes like Rosewood absorb significant solar radiation. As noted in Hormann technical documentation, dark-toned doors should not be installed on unshaded, south-facing elevations exposed to intense daily sunlight, as thermal expansion can cause the curtain slats to bow temporarily.

Measuring Guide for Hormann RollMatic T Roller Doors
Measuring for a Hormann roller door is slightly different to most other roller garage doors on the UK market. Most brands are ordered by their total overall width including guides, but Hormann roller doors are always ordered by the clear in-between guide width. Understanding this distinction ensures your door arrives in the exact size you need.
Understanding Hormann Ordering Dimensions
- Ordering width = In-Between Guide Width: this is the clear opening measurement between the inside faces of the two vertical side guide channels. It is not the total overall width. The guide channels (75mm each side up to 3000mm wide, or 105mm each side over 3000mm) will sit on the outside of this measurement.
- Ordering height = Guide Height: this is measured from your finished garage floor to the top of the side guide channels (the underside of the hood box). The 290mm full hood cover sits above this height, so your ordering height does not include the hood box.
How to Measure Based on Your Fitting Position
- Behind the opening (Internal face fit - recommended): measure the clear daylight brickwork opening width and height. Your brickwork width becomes your ordering width, allowing the side guides to fit flush behind your brick piers for maximum drive-through room. Your floor-to-lintel height is your ordering height. You must have at least 290mm of clear headroom above the lintel for the full hood box, plus 75mm (or 105mm) side room on each pier for the guides.
- Between the opening (Reveal fit): measure the exact brickwork opening width between the reveals. To calculate your ordering width, you must deduct the width of both side guides (deduct 150mm total for doors up to 3000mm, or 210mm total for doors over 3000mm). For the height, deduct the 290mm hood box from your total floor-to-lintel measurement to get your ordering guide height.
General Measuring Advice
- Measure your width and height at three separate points (top, middle, and bottom for width; left, centre, and right for height).
- Always work to the smallest measurement found to ensure the door fits without binding.
- Use a spirit level to check that your garage floor is level across the opening and that your walls and reveals are plumb.
- Deduct a minimum fitting tolerance of 10mm to 15mm overall when installing between the brickwork reveal to allow for uneven walls.
* Always remember: the 290mm full hood cover is not included in the ordering height and requires clear headroom above the guide height.
Please allow additional 5mm to each side of the door.
Guides are 75mm in doors up to 3000mm wide and 105mm in wider doors.
