Classic Medium Rib Horizontal Side Hinged Door, Standard Sizes
The Medium Rib Horizontal spaces its pressed grooves further apart, creating wide flat bands that run across each leaf. This gives the door a bolder, more contemporary linear look than a traditional narrow ribbed door.
It pairs effectively with modern properties, timber or composite cladding, and garage openings where the owner wants a clean, balanced horizontal profile. This model is available in our 15 standard sizes, matching the most common single garage apertures in the UK.
Panel split options
The medium ribs align across the centre meeting point on either arrangement. Choose an equal 50/50 split for balanced double doors, or a 1/3 and 2/3 split for quick pedestrian entry without unbolting the large vehicle leaf. Both split arrangements are available on standard sizes up to 2386mm, with 2538mm supplied 50/50 only.
What is included
- Pre framed and fully assembled in a factory finished 50mm steel frame
- Black exterior locking handle, 3 keys and an internal release handle
- Two point latches operated by internal steel cables on the active leaf
- Top and bottom shoot bolts fitted to the rear of the passive leaf
- Fitting pack with 6 angled steel brackets, coach screws and washers
Construction details
Single skin galvanised steel panels finished in low gloss powder coat, with robust steel bracing across the rear to keep each leaf rigid. Fixed steel hinges with corrosion resistant plating support the leaves in a 50mm steel box frame, supplied in white or colour matched to the door.
Colour finishes
Choose from 32 powder coated colours. White (RAL 9016), Jet Black (RAL 9005) and Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016) carry no surcharge. Tones like Basalt Grey, Slate Grey and Pebble Grey highlight the wide flat bands particularly well.
Ordering and fitting
Standard ordering sizes include the 50mm steel frame on both sides and at the head. Refer to the conversion table in the Measure tab to verify clear internal frame opening dimensions. A colour matched frame is well worth choosing with this design to create an integrated linear look across the facade.
Classic or Icon range?
For a heavier duty specification with a mortice latch and deadlock, 3 dimensional adjustable hinges and full perimeter rubber seals, consider the GDO Icon Medium Horizontal.
* Outward swinging as standard. Inward swinging is available on request.
Customising Your Classic Ribbed Side Hinged Door
Every Classic door arrives pre framed and fully assembled with hinges, latches and hardware fitted in the factory. Here are the choices to confirm when ordering.
Ordering size
Choose from 15 standard sizes across five widths (2081mm, 2183mm, 2234mm, 2386mm and 2538mm) and three heights (1980mm, 2031mm and 2184mm). These measurements are the overall dimensions of the door and steel frame combined. Have a look at the Measure tab to confirm the clear drive through opening each size gives.
Door leaf arrangement
Available as a symmetrical 50/50 split or an asymmetric 1/3 and 2/3 split. A 50/50 split gives two equal doors that look balanced on traditional garages. The 1/3 and 2/3 split gives a practical everyday pedestrian leaf for quick access on foot, with the larger leaf staying bolted until you need to get a car or bulky gear through. The 2538mm (8ft) width comes as a 50/50 split only.
Leading leaf handing
Choose whether your primary access door opens on the right or the left when viewed from outside the garage. This is the active leaf that carries the handle and opens first. On a 1/3 and 2/3 split, the narrower door is always the leading leaf.
Door finish and colour
There are 32 durable low gloss powder coated colours to choose from. White (RAL 9016), Jet Black (RAL 9005) and Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016) are standard colours with no surcharge. The other 29 factory finishes carry a small surcharge. The full colour palette is listed in the Specification tab.
Steel sub frame colour
The 50mm steel box frame comes in powder coated white as standard. If you want a uniform look from the street, you can choose to have the frame factory painted to match your door leaf colour.
Handle choices
A black composite locking handle with 3 keys and an internal turn lever is fitted as standard. You can upgrade to a cast aluminium black handle if you prefer a heavier, more substantial feel in the hand.
Bottom threshold weather seal
Doors are manufactured without a bottom threshold seal as standard. We recommend adding a bottom seal to keep wind, driven rain and leaves from blowing under the door:
- Brush seals (25mm or 50mm): Ideal if your driveway has uneven brick pavers, rough tarmac or slight undulations, as the bristles sweep across high spots without catching.
- Rubber blade seals (25mm or 50mm): Best on a smooth, level concrete apron or tiled garage floor where you want a tight draught seal.
Friction door stays
A pair of overhead friction door stays fits to the top of the frame and door leaves to hold them firmly open at 90 degrees. We strongly recommend these on 50/50 split doors or driveways exposed to coastal and cross winds, preventing the doors swinging back into your vehicle bodywork.
Opening direction
Outward swinging as standard. If your driveway slopes up sharply or garage space allows, inward opening can be supplied at no extra cost. Please get in touch with us before ordering so we can set that up for you manually.
Fitting without a steel frame
If you have a sound structural timber frame already in place and prefer to keep it, we can supply the door leaves unframed. Contact our sales team before ordering so we can confirm leaf dimensions.

Installing Your GDO Classic Side Hinged Garage Door
Classic doors arrive pre framed and fully assembled, with both leaves hung in the steel frame and all latches, shoot bolts and keeps pre fitted at the factory. Installation mainly involves fixing the frame into the structural aperture, fitting the handle pack, and fine tuning the frame legs so the leaves meet cleanly at the centre stiles. A competent DIY installer can tackle this, but it is strictly a two person job because the doorset is heavy and awkward to handle alone.
You can download the full fitting instructions and our practical leaf adjustment guide.
Before you start
- Offer the complete doorset up to the opening to double check clearances. If you are fitting behind the brickwork, confirm the outward swinging leaves will clear the reveals, downpipes or external wall lights.
- A level floor across the threshold is essential. If the floor slopes or dips, the door leaves will bind or sit out of square at the top meeting stiles.
- Always keep an adult helper inside the garage until you have tested the latch mechanism, avoiding any risk of being locked out before adjustments are finished.
What is in the box
- Pre framed steel side hinged doorset
- 6 angled steel fixing brackets
- 12 self drilling tech screws and 12 coach screws (50mm)
- 24 M8 steel washers
- Exterior and interior handle pack with cylinder and 3 keys
You will also need 8mm masonry wall plugs, silicone sealant, and a light machine oil (such as 3-In-One). Basic tools required include a spirit level, tape measure, electric drill with masonry and driver bits, spanner set, screwdriver, protective gloves and eye goggles.
Step by step installation
- Position the complete doorset into the opening, using wooden or plastic wedges to shim the frame temporarily. Use a spirit level on both legs and the head to ensure it sits plumb and square.
- Secure at least three angled brackets to the rear of each frame leg, spaced evenly, using two self drilling tech screws per bracket.
- Drill into the structural masonry and secure the brackets using the 50mm coach screws and 8mm wall plugs, fixing the unit securely without fully tightening.
- Check how the door leaves meet across the top stiles and in the centre before final tightening. Shift the base of the frame legs slightly inwards or outwards until the visual lines and margins are uniform.
- Slide the outer handle spindle through the active leaf, fit the interior handle, and secure with the washer and nut using the provided Allen key. Do not over tighten, as excessive force can deform the outer steel skin.
- Apply light machine oil to the hinges, latch bolts, lock cylinder and cable linkages, then test the locking mechanism thoroughly from the inside.
Aligning the door leaves
Because side hinged garage doors are hand built fabricated units, slight tolerances between leaves are normal. You balance the final appearance simply by adjusting the frame legs before locking off your fixings:
- Both leaves slope down towards the centre: Move the bottom of both frame legs slightly inwards to lift the centre stiles.
- One leaf sits lower than the other: The frame has likely followed an uneven floor. Shim up the lower frame leg with a solid packer until both leaves level out.
- One leaf looks slanted: Move that specific frame leg slightly inwards or outwards at the base until the gap aligns.
* Leave your top wall fixings loosely engaged while adjusting the base of the frame to keep the assembly safe. If you run into difficulty getting the leaves square, contact our technical team and we can put you in touch with an approved local fitter (standard installation charges apply).

Delivery and inspection procedure
Always inspect the doorset carefully upon arrival before signing the driver's delivery manifest. You have 3 business days from receipt to notify us of transit damage or missing components. Once a door is installed, it is deemed accepted in good condition and transit damage claims cannot be accepted.
What is not covered
- Damage caused by incorrect handling, improper storage, forced adjustment or poor installation
- Modifications or repairs carried out by unauthorised or non competent individuals
- Surface contact with aggressive agents such as mortar splash, plaster, harsh acids, road salt or bird lime
- Use of non genuine GDO components or non approved accessories
- General cosmetic wear, stone chips or environmental weathering that occurs after delivery
* Doors installed within 250 metres of open sea coastlines, salt estuaries or heavy industrial zones are exempt from the standard paint finish warranty due to airborne saline corrosion.
Understanding the factory paint finish
The front face of the door leaf is inspected for visual uniformity from a viewing distance of 3 metres in natural daylight. Minor surface variations or microscopic blemishes are standard across powder coated steel. The rear face of single skin panels carries a lighter primer or wash coat from the manufacturing line, which is standard across the garage door industry and does not affect corrosion resistance. Any stone chips or accidental paint scratches from everyday driveway use should be touched up promptly with matching enamel.
Routine maintenance and care
- Following installation, wipe down the face of the panels with a soft cloth to remove any microscopic steel swarf generated during drilling or packing.
- Wash the door panels every 3 months using warm water and a mild car shampoo, rinsing thoroughly with clean water. Never use abrasive cleaning pastes or solvent thinners.
- Every 3 months, lubricate all hinges, lock cylinders, internal latches and shoot bolts using a light household machine oil.
- Have the door checked and serviced annually by a competent tradesperson or garage door engineer.
- If the lock or latch mechanism begins to feel stiff or sluggish, adjust and lubricate it immediately to prevent being locked out.
Adherence to routine cleaning and maintenance guidelines is a condition of the manufacturer guarantee. When raising a warranty enquiry, contact your supplying dealer with your invoice details and the serial number found on the door edge. For doors over 12 months old, basic annual maintenance records may be requested.

Measuring for a Standard Size GDO Classic Side Hinged Door
Our standard size GDO Classic side hinged doors are available in five widths and three heights, giving 15 size combinations. These sizes suit many common single garage door openings in the UK, so a standard size may provide a practical alternative to a purpose-made door.
The sizes shown are the overall ordering dimensions of the complete doorset, including the factory-fitted steel frame. The frame has 50mm legs on both sides and a 50mm head, so the clear internal frame opening is 100mm narrower and 50mm lower than the ordering size.
For example, a 2234mm x 2184mm doorset has a clear internal frame opening of 2134mm x 2134mm. This corresponds to the traditional 7ft 0in x 7ft 0in garage door reference size.
Standard size conversion table
| Ordering size (overall W x H mm) | Clear internal frame opening (W x H mm) | Imperial reference size |
|---|---|---|
| 2081 x 1980mm | 1981 x 1930mm | 6ft 6in x 6ft 4in |
| 2081 x 2031mm | 1981 x 1981mm | 6ft 6in x 6ft 6in |
| 2081 x 2184mm | 1981 x 2134mm | 6ft 6in x 7ft 0in |
| 2183 x 1980mm | 2083 x 1930mm | 6ft 10in x 6ft 4in |
| 2183 x 2031mm | 2083 x 1981mm | 6ft 10in x 6ft 6in |
| 2183 x 2184mm | 2083 x 2134mm | 6ft 10in x 7ft 0in |
| 2234 x 1980mm | 2134 x 1930mm | 7ft 0in x 6ft 4in |
| 2234 x 2031mm | 2134 x 1981mm | 7ft 0in x 6ft 6in |
| 2234 x 2184mm | 2134 x 2134mm | 7ft 0in x 7ft 0in |
| 2386 x 1980mm | 2286 x 1930mm | 7ft 6in x 6ft 4in |
| 2386 x 2031mm | 2286 x 1981mm | 7ft 6in x 6ft 6in |
| 2386 x 2184mm | 2286 x 2134mm | 7ft 6in x 7ft 0in |
| 2538 x 1980mm | 2438 x 1930mm | 8ft 0in x 6ft 4in |
| 2538 x 2031mm | 2438 x 1981mm | 8ft 0in x 6ft 6in |
| 2538 x 2184mm | 2438 x 2134mm | 8ft 0in x 7ft 0in |
Both 50/50 and 1/3–2/3 split options are available on standard sizes up to 2386mm wide. The 2538mm (8ft 0in) wide size is supplied as a symmetrical 50/50 split only.
How to Measure Your Opening
GDO steel side hinged doors are normally fitted between the structural opening. Measure the clear brickwork or structural aperture, rather than an existing door or timber frame that is being removed.
- Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the opening, then use the smallest measurement.
- Measure the height from the underside of the lintel to the finished floor level on the left, centre and right, then use the smallest measurement.
- Check that the opening is square, as an out-of-square opening may require additional fitting tolerance or a purpose-made size.
- Check that the floor is level across the full width of the opening. A level floor is essential for the door leaves to align and operate smoothly.
- Measure only from finished surfaces. Account for any planned floor screed, render, cladding or timber linings that will reduce the final opening size.
Allowing for Fitting Tolerance
The ordering dimensions are exact overall dimensions for the complete door and steel frame; fitting tolerances are not deducted automatically at the factory. When fitting between the opening, deduct a suitable tolerance from your smallest measured opening dimensions before selecting a standard size or specifying a purpose-made size.
As a guide, allow approximately 10–20mm on the overall width and 5–10mm on the overall height. A slightly greater allowance may be sensible where the brickwork is uneven, the opening is out of square, or the floor is not level.
Example: If your smallest opening measurement is 2400mm wide x 2150mm high, an appropriate overall doorset size would be approximately 2380mm x 2140mm. This allows 20mm on width and 10mm on height for positioning and sealing.
Fitting in or Behind the Opening
Fitting in the opening: This is the most common installation method. Choose an overall ordering size smaller than the smallest structural opening measurement, allowing enough tolerance to position the frame plumb, square and level.
Fitting behind the opening: A behind-opening installation requires the 50mm frame legs and head to overlap the inside face of the brickwork. Check there is sufficient flat, sound brickwork for fixings and that the outward-opening leaves will swing clear of the reveals, downpipes or any external wall lights.
* Outward swinging as standard. Before ordering, confirm there is clear space in front of the garage for both door leaves to open fully.
Need a Purpose Made Size?
If none of the standard sizes gives the right overall dimensions once fitting tolerance has been deducted, the same GDO Classic design can be made to order up to 2750mm wide and 2340mm high. Purpose-made ordering sizes are also the overall external dimensions of the door and factory-fitted steel frame.
