Side Hinged Timber GEAR TYPE: Side Hinged

The Cedar Ashbourne side-hinged garage door offers a classic alternative to the modern Up and Over mechanism, providing a conventional opening style that allows for convenient pedestrian access. Traditionally constructed from premium solid Western Red Cedar, the Ashbourne features a generous glazed upper section paired with vertical tongue-and-groove cedar boarding in the lower half. There is no plywood used in this design; the solid cedar stiles and rails are assembled with mortice and tenon joints—glued and wedged to provide the strongest joint method in timber door construction. Doors are available in both standard and made-to-measure sizes from 6ft to 10ft wide by 5ft 6ins to 8ft high, complete with a choice of hardware combinations to suit your property's style.

Cedar Ashbourne Side Hinged Garage Door (Made to Measure)

No two garages are quite the same, and the made-to-measure Cedar Ashbourne side-hinged door is built to reflect that reality. Whether your opening is an awkward width from an older property, a non-standard height from a self-build, or simply outside the dimensions that off-the-shelf doors can accommodate, the Ashbourne can be crafted to fit precisely. Cedar Doors produces this door to your exact specification in solid Western Red Cedar, ensuring the finished result is indistinguishable from a door built for a standard opening.

The ability to order a Cedar Doors side-hinged door to measure is particularly valuable in the UK, where garage openings vary considerably across the housing stock, from Edwardian terraces to post-war semis to contemporary detached homes. The Ashbourne is constructed with solid cedar stiles and rails, housing a generous glazed upper section and traditional vertical tongue-and-groove solid cedar boards in the lower half. Every joint is morticed and tenoned, glued, and wedged for a frame that remains sound across years of use. A choice of 10 colour options means the door can be finished to match the existing woodwork or colour palette of the property, and a basecoat delivery option is available for homeowners who wish to apply their own finish.

  • Made-to-measure construction tailored exactly to your opening dimensions
  • Solid cedarwood stiles and rails with vertical tongue-and-groove cedar boarding
  • Large upper glazed section featuring 4mm toughened safety glass (plain or stippled)
  • Traditional mortice and tenon joints, glued and wedged for lasting durability
  • Available in 10 timber stain and finish colour options, or in a basecoat for DIY finishing
  • Custom sizes available spanning from 6ft to 10ft wide and 5ft 6in to 8ft high
  • Choice of hardware combinations including strap or butt hinges and a Yale-type lock
  • Natural thermal insulator, outperforming single-skin steel alternatives

Customisation Options for Cedar Timber Side-Hinged Garage Doors

Size Requirements and Ordering Process

When selecting your required door width and height (available from 6ft to 10ft wide and 5ft 6in to 8ft high), the ordering process will depend on the type of door you require:

  • Standard Size Doors: Simply choose your required width and height from the standard dimension options.
  • Made to Measure Doors: Select the nearest 'up to' width and height sizes that cover your requirements. When proceeding to place your order, you can fill in the specific ordering dimension boxes where you can enter your exact sizes required.

Colour and Finish Options

Choose how your door is finished from the factory:

  • Factory Applied Basecoat : The door is supplied with a single basecoat stain applied at the factory, ready for finishing on site to your own specification. This option gives you full control over the final colour and is suitable where a specific site-mixed or third-party stain is to be used.
  • Factory Finished Colour : Choose from 10 factory applied colour and stain options. The door arrives finished and ready to install, providing consistent colour coverage and the highest level of protection from the manufacturer.

Timber Sub Frame Selection

A sub frame is required to fix the door into the garage opening. Select one of the following:

  • 95 x 75 Hardwood Sub Frame : A hardwood timber fixing frame supplied with the door for installation into the opening.
  • 95 x 75 Softwood Sub Frame : A softwood timber fixing frame supplied with the door for installation into the opening.
  • No Sub Frame Required : Select this option if you are reusing an existing frame or sourcing your own fixing frame separately.

Sub Frame Colour Matching

If a sub frame has been selected, specify whether it should be finished to match the door colour or left unfinished:

  • Colour Matched to Door : The sub frame is finished in the same colour as the door.
  • Not Colour Matched : The sub frame is supplied without colour matching.

Door Handing and Leaf Configuration

Specify the handing of the door relative to your opening and which leaf is to be the leading leaf. The leading leaf is the first to open and carries the primary locking point where the two leaves meet at the centre.

  • Left Hand Leading : The left leaf (as viewed from outside the garage) is the leading leaf and opens first.
  • Right Hand Leading : The right leaf (as viewed from outside the garage) is the leading leaf and opens first (This is the standard configuration).

Hardware and Ironmongery Packs

All hardware packs are CE and CPD compliant and are supplied complete with fixing screws and bolts. Select the style that best suits the door finish and the property:

  • Antique Pack : Black antique finish. Includes: 2 pairs of 18in black antique tee hinges, 1 pair of garage door stays, 1 top bow handle bolt, 1 foot bolt, and a Yale lock with black finger pull.
  • Modern Pack : Stainless steel finish. Includes: 3 pairs of stainless steel 4in butt hinges, 1 pair of garage door stays, 1 top bow handle bolt, 1 foot bolt, and a Yale lock with finger pull.
  • Traditional Pack : Galvanised finish. Includes: 2 pairs of galvanised 24in heavy duty hooks and bands, 1 pair of garage door stays, 1 top bow handle bolt, 1 foot bolt, and a Yale lock with finger pull.

Technical Specification: Cedar Door Timber Side Hinged Garage Doors

Materials and Core Construction

All traditional side-hinged garage doors are manufactured from the finest grade of kiln-dried Western Red Cedar. The primary framework relies on traditional door construction methods; all solid cedar stiles and rails are assembled using mortice and tenon joints that are subsequently glued and wedged. This traditional jointing technique ensures superior structural integrity and a long-lasting service life.

Sustainability and Certifications

All Cedar Door products are manufactured using certified timber sourced responsibly. The company holds PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) Chain of Custody Certification, meaning all timber can be tracked directly back to its sustainable forest of origin. Timber is strictly purchased from suppliers who also hold PEFC certification and support the 'Forests Forever' campaign. Cedar Door regularly reviews the environmental practices of its suppliers to ensure the earth's forests remain a truly renewable resource.

Door Designs and Infill Options

The internal sections of the solid cedar framework can be tailored to several design profiles depending on the chosen model:

  • Close Boarded Designs: Feature solid, vertically boarded tongue and groove cedar profiles (such as 130mm wide bead and butt boards) that are glue-bonded into the solid cedar frame.
  • Plywood Backed (Sherwood Style): Manufactured using selected kiln-dried 16mm cedar facings that are glue-bonded onto 6mm exterior-grade plywood backing sheets for enhanced dimensional stability.
  • Panelled Designs: Constructed with traditional inset panels using either solid Western Red Cedar or exterior-grade plywood, beautifully finished with stopped chamfer detailing.

Door Configurations and Handing

As standard, all Cedar Door side-hinged doors are configured with a right-hand leading leaf when viewed from the outside. A left-hand leading leaf configuration is also available as an optional extra if preferred.

Glazing Specifications

The Cedar Range of traditional side-hinged doors comes complete with 4mm toughened safety glass. Customers can select between plain or stippled glazing. Both plain and stippled window options can be specified with no leading, diamond leading, or square leading to suit the architectural style of your property.

Hardware and Ironmongery

Cedar Door side-hinged doors are supplied with comprehensive hardware packs, complete with all necessary fixing screws and bolts. Any door exceeding 7ft 6in in height will be automatically upgraded to a multi-locking system for enhanced security. Customers can choose between the following packs:

  • Traditional Pack: Includes 2 pairs of galvanised 24-inch heavy-duty hooks and bands, 1 pair of garage door stays, 1 top bow handle bolt, 1 foot bolt, and 1 Yale lock with a finger pull.
  • Modern Pack: Includes 3 pairs of stainless steel 4-inch butt hinges, 1 pair of garage door stays, 1 top bow handle bolt, 1 foot bolt, and 1 Yale lock with a finger pull.

Timber Door Frames

Purpose-made timber frames specifically designed for side-hinged doors are supplied in a 70mm x 90mm cross-section and feature loose stops. Frames can be specified in either Softwood or Hardwood, supporting standard door sizes up to 8ft (2438mm) wide and larger bespoke sizes.

Factory Finishes and Coatings

As standard, all timber door panels are fully dipped in a tank of Remmers light basecoat, providing temporary transit and installation protection. Alternatively, doors can be ordered fully finished from the factory for a maintenance-free experience. Fully finished doors are treated with high-quality Remmers or Teknos wood stains, or they can be colour-matched to any specific RAL or BS colour code.

Installation Guidance for Cedar Timber Side-Hinged Doors

Professional Installation Recommended

Please note that Cedar timber side hinged garage doors are supplied ready for assembly and require a high level of joinery skill to install correctly. Although Western Red Cedar is a naturally lightweight timber, the precise nature of the work, including routing, morticing, and aligning, means we strongly recommend that installation is carried out by a qualified carpenter or an expert tradesperson experienced in hanging traditional timber doors.

Sub Frame Assembly and Alignment

If a timber sub frame has been supplied, it must be assembled, squared, and securely fixed into the garage opening before the door leaves are offered up. The timber frame must be perfectly plumb, level, and securely anchored to the brickwork. Any twisting or misalignment in the frame will prevent the door leaves from operating correctly or meeting seamlessly in the centre.

Hanging the Door Leaves

The door leaves and hardware are supplied separately, meaning the hinges must be accurately measured, aligned, and fitted on site. Depending on your chosen hardware pack, the galvanised hooks and bands, stainless steel butt hinges, or antique tee hinges must be carefully positioned and properly anchored into the solid cedar stiles and the timber sub frame to ensure smooth operation and perfect structural geometry.

Expert Lock and Hardware Fitting

Fitting the locking mechanism requires expert precision. The Yale lock requires accurate measuring, drilling, and morticing by your installer to ensure a smooth, secure latching operation without damaging the timber. Alongside the primary lock, all secondary ironmongery must be positioned and fitted on-site. This includes:

  • Top bow handle bolts and bottom foot bolts for securely anchoring the fixed leaf
  • Garage door stays to safely hold the doors open and prevent wind damage
  • Any necessary handles, finger pulls, and optional multi-point locking systems

Clearances and Environmental Tolerances

Because Western Red Cedar is a natural material, it will marginally expand and contract in response to temperature and humidity changes. Your tradesperson must ensure that appropriate clearances and tolerances are maintained around the edges of the door leaves. This allows for natural timber movement without causing the doors to bind, rub, or stick within the frame during wetter months.

Warranty and Natural Timber Information

Warranty Period

Cedar doors and hardware come with a 2-year manufacturer's warranty for unfinished doors and a 4-year warranty for factory-finished doors. This covers structural integrity and manufacturing defects, provided the door is correctly installed and maintained. Please note that this warranty does not cover normal wear and tear items, nor does it cover natural timber variations or damage resulting from weather conditions and improper care.

Timber as a Natural Material

Cedar Door side hinged garage doors are manufactured from solid western red cedar, an organically grown natural material. As with all timber products used in external applications, the behaviour and appearance of the wood will be influenced by the environmental conditions in which it is installed and used. Cedar Door accepts no liability or responsibility for variations that occur as a result of the natural characteristics of the timber, including:

  • Colour variation between boards, panels or between the door and any colour reference
  • Natural grain variation, including close grain, wide grain or short grain
  • Small knots, surface shakes, splits or grain lift inherent in the timber
  • Lateral or longitudinal movement
  • Splitting or shaking resulting from environmental acclimatisation
  • Minor curvature as a result of moisture content or humidity variation
  • Resin exudation

Timber substrates naturally expand and contract in response to changes in temperature and humidity. Moisture content variation may cause joints to open and close marginally, and some minor curvature may occur over time. Any curvature that develops under normal service conditions will not affect the long-term structural performance or working life of the door. These characteristics are considered inherent features of natural timber and are not classified as manufacturing defects.

Visual Inspection Standard

Cedar Door carries out a visual quality control check on each door prior to despatch. On delivery, the customer is required to carry out their own visual inspection of the door in natural daylight before installation takes place. The inspection should be conducted from a distance of 3 metres (10 feet). The door is considered acceptable if none of the following is readily visible from that distance:

  • Marks or distortion attributable to the manufacturing process
  • Minor indentations, marks or surface scuffs
  • Minor paint or stain blemishes

An allowable deflection of up to 1in (25mm) applies to doors up to 8ft in width or height. Any defect or anomaly must be reported to the supplier within 48 hours of the goods being received. Cedar Door cannot be held responsible for any naturally occurring characteristic identified after installation has been completed.

Factory Finish and Coating

Doors supplied with the standard factory basecoat are finished with a dip immersion basecoat stain applied at the factory. This coating is intended for transit and temporary protection during installation and is not a permanent exterior finish. A full site-applied finish should be applied by the installer or customer before the door enters regular service.

Doors ordered with a factory applied colour finish are treated with a coloured woodstain at the factory. This finish has an erosion period of 5 years under normal service conditions. This is not a formal manufacturer's warranty but reflects the expected performance of the coating under regular maintenance. Cedar Door cannot guarantee exact colour matching due to the natural variation in cedar shading; brochure and sample colours are provided as a guide only.

Doors installed on south-facing elevations or in positions subject to prolonged or intense direct sunlight, particularly in darker colour finishes, may experience elevated heat uptake leading to abnormal timber movement or distortion. This is the responsibility of the buyer and is not covered under any Cedar Door warranty or liability provision.

Storage and Handling

To protect the door prior to installation, the following storage requirements apply:

  • Keep the polythene shrink-wrap packaging in place until immediately before site coatings are applied
  • Do not store the door in direct sunlight
  • Do not expose the door to water contamination during storage
  • Store the door upright at all times
  • Protect from site contamination and weather exposure prior to installation
