Hormann 2601 Elegance Steel Up and Over Garage Door (White or Anthracite)

The Hormann 2601 Elegance is designed for homeowners who want the proven reliability of a steel up and over door without the utility look of standard narrow ribs. By pressing the galvanised steel leaf into broad vertical panels, Hormann has created a door with visual depth that suits 1930s semis, modern detached houses, and village renovations alike. The vertical lines add height to the garage opening while giving the front elevation an uncluttered, modern feel.

Every 2601 Elegance is hot-dip galvanised and finished at the factory with a high-grade polyester primer powder coating that resists weather, corrosion, and UV fading. Whether you choose bright Traffic White or architectural Anthracite Grey, there is no initial site painting needed, and keeping it clean only takes a quick wash with warm water and a sponge once or twice a year.

Two Factory Colour Finishes

  • Traffic White (RAL 9016): A clean, crisp white that pairs naturally with standard white uPVC window frames, fascias, and soffits. It brightens darker driveways and offers a timeless exterior look.
  • Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016): The benchmark architectural grey. A deep, modern shade that coordinates with grey composite entrance doors, aluminium glazing systems, and contemporary render or brickwork.

Available Standard UK Opening Sizes

We supply the 2601 Elegance in the six most common UK standard single garage sizes. Sizing refers to the nominal door leaf dimension / inside frame opening (daylight width x height):

  • 7ft 0in wide: 7ft 0in x 6ft 6in (2134mm x 1981mm) | 7ft 0in x 7ft 0in (2134mm x 2134mm)
  • 7ft 6in wide: 7ft 6in x 6ft 6in (2286mm x 1981mm) | 7ft 6in x 7ft 0in (2286mm x 2134mm)
  • 8ft 0in wide: 8ft 0in x 6ft 6in (2438mm x 1981mm) | 8ft 0in x 7ft 0in (2438mm x 2134mm)

Canopy or Retractable Operating Gear

Matching the mechanism to your garage layout ensures the best day-to-day operation:

  • Canopy Gear: The classic UK manual mechanism. Lifted by a top torsion spring and guided by slim vertical side tracks. When fully open, about one third of the door leaf extends outward past the brick face to create an overhead canopy. Because no tracks run back into the garage, canopy gear leaves your entire ceiling area clear for storage, high shelving, or loft hatches. Canopy doors are engineered primarily for smooth manual hand operation.
  • Retractable Gear: Uses enclosed side tension springs and horizontal ceiling-mounted tracks that guide the door leaf completely into the garage when open, leaving nothing protruding outside. Retractable gear is required if you plan to add remote control electric automation, and it provides light, balanced fingertip manual lifting.

With or Without a Factory Steel Sub Frame

Up and over doors must be hung within a fixing sub frame. While you can hang the door leaf to an existing sound timber frame, ordering it with the factory fitted steel box section sub frame is the best way to get a durable, professional finish:

  • Factory Pre Assembled Gearing: Single doors ordered with the steel frame arrive pre-hung as a complete unit. The springs, side arms, and tracks are already fixed and aligned at the factory, cutting installation time and eliminating squareness problems on site.
  • Colour Matched and Maintenance Free: The steel sub frame is galvanised and factory powder-coated to match your door leaf (White or Anthracite), eliminating timber rot, regular repainting, and timber movement.
  • Tighter Security: The rigid steel-to-steel interface leaves minimal pry gaps, offering vastly superior resistance to crowbars and lever tools compared to a soft timber frame.

*The standard 75mm steel frame adds 70mm to each side and 57mm across the head. If fitting between your brick piers, remember to include these frame dimensions and a small fitting tolerance in your opening calculations.

Mechanical Security and Fittings

  • Twin Rotary Catch Locking: Hormann mechanical rotary latches at the bottom corners clamp the door leaf firmly into the steel frame legs. This locks the panel far more securely against lever attacks than budget slide bolts.
  • Lock Furniture: Supplied with an exterior round black nylon handle, interior turn release disc, euro profile cylinder, and two keys. Optional metallic handle upgrades (brushed chrome, brass, or stainless steel) are available to match house door handles.
  • Optional 4-Point Locking: Add an optional top-latching kit to upgrade the mechanical security from two points to four points.
  • Multi Spring Safety System: Enclosed multi-spring coils on each side prevent the panel from dropping suddenly in the rare event of a single spring break.

Electric Automation with Hormann Operators

If you choose retractable operating gear, your 2601 Elegance is ready to automate using a Hormann ProMatic or Hormann SupraMatic electric boom operator:

  • Secure BiSecur Signal: Includes 2 remote hand transmitters operating on 868 MHz BiSecur 128-bit encryption, stopping code copying and radio signal grabbing.
  • Automatic Boom Lock: When closed, an automatic mechanical hook in the operator rail engages, holding the door shut mechanically even during a mains power cut.
  • Optional De-Latch Kit: We recommend adding a de-latch kit when automating, which links the door's lower mechanical rotary latches to the motor carriage for dual top and bottom physical frame locking.
  • Emergency Release: Essential if your garage has no pedestrian side door, allowing you to disengage the electric operator from outside with a key during a power cut.

Factory Fitted Steel Fixing Frame

The steel sub frame offered as an option is also finished in the same white finish as the door and saves a lot of time and money over a timber sub frame option whilst also offering tighter tolerances around the edges of the door panel.

We recommend the steel sub frame for all up and over garage doors.

We offer 2 sizes for the steel sub frame, a 60mm wide frame which can only be used on the canopy operating mechanism and a 75mm wide frame which is offered on the canopy or retractable gear mechanism. The retractable operating gear can only have the 75mm frame option.

Choose Handle Option
Choose from a selection of high quality round handles to include euro cylinder security locking with a 2 point internal locking rod system as standard.

A choice of a standard nylon black handle or various aluminium and stainless steel options.

Extra Security Locking
Upgrade to a 4 point locking rod system for the best security and resistance to force entry. The Hormann locking rod system combined with a steel sub frame utilises the steel closing lip along with strategically placed steel plates to prevent easy access to the internal locking catches for the door.

With each locking latch in each corner this is a hard door to break into.

If you decide to order the remote control operator then there is no need to opt for a 4 point locking system as the operator holds the top of the door but the ‘De Latch Security Locking’ is a great device to utilise the manual locking for the retractable gear option in conjunction with the remote control operator by connecting with a mechanical latching system. It will provide a 3 point locking system when added to your door.

If you do not opt for the De Latch system you will have to de commission the manual locking system on the door. For a canopy door the de latch mechanism is not possible with the electric operator, only for the retractable mechanism.

Emergency External Release
This is a cable attachment system internally for providing an external method of disconnecting the remote control operator towing arm for the garage door in the event of a power failure and when you do not have another way of accessing the garage.

Retractable PLUS gear
Only an option if you choose the retractable mechanism on the door. This is a clever cranked arm system to provide a wider drive through width when the door is open by raising the height of the lifting arms either side of the door. It will only provide a wider drive through width for most cars and not 4x4 vehicles. Please check for exact dimensions or ask for clarification depending on the door height chosen.

Door Construction and Factory Finish

The door leaf is constructed from high-grade galvanised sheet steel with welded internal bracing to eliminate panel twist. Both the door leaf and the optional steel sub frame are finished with an electrostatic polyester powder coating that requires no initial decorating and provides long-lasting protection against corrosion and weathering.

Available Factory Colours:
Traffic White (RAL 9016)
Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016)
*When ordered with the factory steel sub frame, the frame is powder-coated in the exact same colour as the door leaf for a clean, uniform finish.

Operating Mechanism: Canopy vs Retractable

Canopy Operating Gear (Manual Specialist)
Canopy gear uses an overhead torsion spring mounted across the head of the frame, paired with cables and precision steel rollers running inside vertical tracks. It incorporates an anti-drop spring and cable-break safety system fully compliant with BS EN 12604.

  • Maximum Drive-Through Width: Because the lifting gear is contained in vertical tracks flush to the frame legs, canopy gear preserves your full clear drive-through width at vehicle mirror height.
  • Ceiling Clearance: Leaves your garage ceiling completely clear of horizontal tracks.
  • Automation Caveat: Can be automated using an electric operator, but it requires an additional canopy bow arm converter fitted to the top of the leaf, which reduces drive-through height by roughly 120mm to 150mm. For regular electric operation, retractable gear is always recommended.

Retractable Operating Gear (Automation Ready)
Retractable gear uses side-mounted multi-spring counterbalance assemblies with enclosed, tight-wound coils that eliminate finger-trap risks, conforming to BS EN 12604. Horizontal overhead tracks guide the door leaf completely inside the garage when open.

  • Ideal for Automation: Connects straight to an electric boom operator towing arm with no additional brackets required.
  • Drive-Through Width Check: The side lifting arms pivot between the frame legs at vehicle wing-mirror height. If your opening width is tight, consider this restriction carefully before ordering.
  • Retractable Plus Option: If you want the smooth running and direct automation of retractable gear without sacrificing drive-through width, the optional Retractable Plus gear raises the side pivot geometry to restore clear passage width equal to canopy gear.

Fittings and Mechanical Locking

Supplied as standard with an ergonomic round black nylon exterior handle and an interior turn disc latch release. The lock body accepts a standard euro profile half cylinder (supplied with 2 keys) and operates an adjustable 2-point mechanical latching system using spring-loaded side rotary catches that bite into the steel frame.

*An optional 4-point locking upgrade kit is available to add upper latching points for maximum mechanical resistance against pry-bar forced entry.

Electric Automation Options

The Hormann ProMatic and Hormann SupraMatic ceiling-mounted operators are designed to integrate seamlessly with Series 2000 retractable doors. Both operators feature:

  • BiSecur Handsets: Supplied with 2 micro hand transmitters operating on 868 MHz BiSecur 128-bit encryption to prevent code grabbing and radio cloning.
  • Integral Safety: Automatic obstacle reversal stops and reverses the door instantly if it encounters an obstruction.
  • Smooth Operation: Soft start and soft stop cycles minimise mechanical strain on door springs and linkages.
  • Automatic Boom Lock: A mechanical hook in the boom rail locks the door shut automatically, keeping it secure even during a power cut.

De-Latch Security Locking Kit
When an electric operator is fitted to an up and over door, the motor boom holds the door shut at the top centre, leaving the mechanical bottom catches disconnected. Adding a genuine Hormann de-latch kit connects the lower rotary latches directly to the motor carriage. When activated, the motor mechanically pulls and releases the side latches before lifting, giving you the dual benefit of electric convenience and physical multi-point frame locking.

External Emergency Release Device
If your garage does not have a separate pedestrian side door or an internal entrance into the house, an external emergency release device is essential. This allows you to disengage the operator carriage with a physical key from outside during a power failure, ensuring you are never locked out.

Standard Build Specification

  • Smooth Running Bearings: Pre-assembled synthetic nylon rollers and maintenance-free bushes in all pivot bearings ensure fluid, quiet travel without metal-on-metal wear.
  • Integral Buffer Stops: Heavy-duty buffer stops prevent over-travel when the door reaches the fully open position.
  • Bottom Weatherstrip: Flexible synthetic rubber bottom seal cushions the panel on floor contact and helps keep windblown leaves and rain out.

Delivery and On-Site Handling

Single doors are delivered fully pre-assembled as a single rigid unit. When ordered with the matching factory steel sub frame, the gear arms, springs, and tracks are pre-mounted directly to the frame, ensuring square align

Full installation details are provided with the door as well as various components for installing the optional steel fixing frame if ordered. Steel brackets and screws are provided for the fixing frame or timber screws for a timber fixing frame installation - you will only need fixings for installing the steel brackets to your structural opening. All Hormann garage doors are delivered with your chosen operating mechanism factory installed to the door panel and the only item to fix after installing the door is the handle set supplied seperately with the door. The spring is already tensioned on the canopy doors and released by removing a transit screw once the door is installed.

Installation Positions

Hormann up and over garage doors with fixing frames can be installed either inbetween or behind the structural garage opening but not in front. The installation position is usually dependant on sizing restrictions or the finish and depth of the garage piers, although aesthetics quite often is a major factor. A garage door fitted onto the inside face of an opening can be wider and higher than a door fitted inbetween the same size opening. If you are not sure please call or email us, it could mean the difference between getting your vehicle into the garage or not.

User Information/Care

Finish - Steel Doors

The coating process applied to the door and chassis is environmentally friendly. Minor scratches or marks are not covered under the conditions of our warranty and should be repaired immediately to prevent corrosion and deterioration of the panel. Corrosive substances such as acids, alkalines, and salts, etc. should be cleaned from the door immediately; failure to do so will result in deterioration of the finish, which will not be covered under our warranty. Should deterioration of the finish start to occur you will need to repaint your door immediately. Prepare the surface lightly with wet and dry. Then treat with solvent based 2 pack epoxy wash primer and a normal commercial paint (cellulose paint must not be used). Hörmann steel doors are a finished product. They do not require re-painting on site. They are however not immune to damage, which can occur at any stage of the handling of the product from factory to site.

Finish - Timber Doors

Timber panels are coated with a neutralising base-stain. Doors must be stored upright, under cover, with wrapping intact, until wrapping is removed. As soon as the door is unwrapped, one coat of a good quality basecoat primer must be applied to both sides of the door. Immediately after installation, your timber doors require a further two coats of a good quality exterior wood finish on both sides. Initial application and periodic treatment should be carried out strictly in accordance with the woodstain manufacturer's instructions. Failure to follow these instructions will result in early deterioration of the timber panel.

Finish - GRP Doors

GRP door panels should periodically washed down using water. This should be done more frequently if fitted near the sea. Bird droppings will bleach the finish on GRP. and should be removed using water as soon as possible. GRP doors should not be painted over.

Paint Finish - Steel Doors

Minor surface damage can easily be repaired using touch up sprays or sticks without invalidating warranties.
