Up and Over Garage Doors

The "up and over" is still the most common garage door style you'll see across the UK. It’s a straightforward, reliable door design that’s been the standard for decades, because it just works. Whether you are looking for a basic functional steel door for a rental property or a high-end timber design to finish off a renovation, the up and over mechanism is usually the most cost effective way to get a solid, secure door.

At Garage Doors Online, we supply these doors from the main UK and European manufacturers like Hormann and Garador, alongside our own GDO range. Because we deal directly with the factories, we can offer the full catalogue of styles, from the classic vertical ribs to more traditional Georgian or designer door panels.

Understanding the Gear: Canopy vs. Retractable

The most important choice you'll make isn't the colour or the pattern quite often, but the type of lifting gear. This determines how the door moves and whether you can easily add an electric motor later.

1. Canopy Gear

This is the traditional "overhead spring" setup. It’s the most popular choice for standard single-width garages because it’s simple to install and doesn't require tracks running back into the garage space.

  • How it works: When open, the door panel sticks out about a third of the way, forming a "canopy" outside the garage.
  • Best for: Manual operation where you want to keep the garage ceiling clear of tracks.
  • Note: We don't generally recommend automating a canopy door. While "bow arm" conversion kits exist, they are often clunky and less reliable than a purpose-built retractable setup. They do however give you the full width drive through if space is tight.

2. Retractable Gear

If you want an electric garage door, you need retractable gear. This uses horizontal tracks that run back into the garage at a high level.

  • How it works: The door panel lifts and slides fully back into the garage, guided by tracks at the top and springs at the sides.
  • Best for: Electric automation. The movement is much smoother and more balanced, which is exactly what an electric motor needs to work reliably for years.
  • Space Consideration: Because the lifting arms sit inside the frame, the "drive-through" width is reduced by about 100mm to 150mm. If you have a very narrow garage, keep this in mind.

Material Choices: Steel, Timber, or GRP

The material you choose will dictate how much maintenance you'll have to do and how the door handles the British weather.

Steel Doors

These are the "bread and butter" of the industry. They are galvanised and powder-coated, meaning they won't rust easily and only need an occasional wipe down. They offer the best value for money and come in the widest range of factory-finished colours.

Timber (Cedar)

For a period property or a high-end finish, nothing quite beats real wood. Our cedar doors use solid Western Red Cedar, known for its natural resistance to rot. These are heavier doors with a lot of character, though they do require a bit of regular staining to keep them looking their best.

GRP (Fibreglass)

Ideal if you live near the coast. Salt air eats through cheap metal, but GRP is completely inert. It doesn't rust, rot, or warp. You can get GRP doors in "woodgrain" finishes that look remarkably like real timber but require zero maintenance.

Why Have an Up and Over?

With sectional and roller doors becoming more popular, why choose a traditional up and over?

  • Speed of Access: For a manual door, it’s the fastest way in. One turn of the handle and a quick lift, and you're in.
  • Simplicity: Fewer moving parts means there is less to go wrong. Maintenance is usually just a bit of 3-in-1 oil on the pivots and springs once a year.
  • Natural Ventilation: Unlike a sealed sectional door, a standard up and over allows a small amount of airflow around the edges. This is actually a benefit in an unheated garage, as it helps prevent damp and condensation build-up on your car or tools.

Security and Safety

Every door we supply is built to current safety standards (BS EN 12604). This includes "anti-drop" devices, so if a spring ever snaps, the door won't come crashing down. On the security side, many modern doors use multi-point locking with steel latching bars, making them much harder to force open than the old doors from twenty years ago.

A level floor is essential for the best results, especially if you want a tight seal at the bottom. You can also order a weather seal for the floor or door.

Measuring and Ordering

When measuring up yourself, always check the ordering dimensions first, as this is how most manufacturers categorise their sizes and they can vary from one manufacturer to another and between standard or purpose made size options.
