Hormann LPU42 L Ribbed Decograin in Standard Sizes up to 6000mm wide
The Hormann LPU42 L Ribbed Decograin sectional garage door is designed to look like it truly belongs on the property rather than simply filling a hole in the wall. The wide L Ribbed profile gives the impression of broad timber planks, while the Decograin foil finish brings the warmth and variation of real wood grain without the regular staining, painting or swelling you get with timber. With 5 Decograin options available in a mix of imperial and metric standard sizes, including widths up to 6000 mm and heights up to 3000 mm, this model suits many typical United Kingdom and European garage openings where a visually distinctive and durable finish is a priority.
Decograin Wood Effect in Five Finishes
Decograin is a decorative laminate foil that is bonded to the outer steel face of each LPU42 panel in the Hormann factory. It is UV resistant and designed specifically for long term outdoor use. The 5 Decograin options on this L Ribbed model are Golden Oak, Dark Oak, Night Oak, Rosewood and Titan Metallic CH703, covering everything from warm honey tones and rich mid browns through to very dark, almost black timber effects and an anthracite metallic variant. Each finish carries a 5 year surface warranty from Hormann in normal domestic use, reflecting the stability of the foil colouring and grain structure under sunlight and weather exposure.
Unlike many painted wood effect doors, Decograin foils are produced with consistent grain patterns and colour tones and are less prone to the patchy fading and chalking that can affect sprayed finishes on south or west facing elevations. The effect up close is convincing, but from the street the Decograin L Ribbed door reads very much like a high quality timber sectional door, particularly in the Golden Oak and Dark Oak options.
Standard Sizes for Practical Projects
This LPU42 L Ribbed Decograin model is offered in a broad range of standard sizes, drawing from both United Kingdom imperial references and European metric ranges. That means you can order doors to suit common single garage widths and heights, as well as selected double widths up to 6000 mm wide and 3000 mm high, without the additional cost and lead time of a fully made to measure specification. Many domestic garages fall within these brackets, so choosing a standard size is often the most cost effective and straightforward approach.
Because the doors follow established size grids, they pass through Hormann production and distribution more quickly than bespoke dimensions. If your existing opening is close to one of the standard sizes, small adjustments to the reveal or packing pieces can often be used to achieve a neat installation. Where an opening is significantly outside these ranges, or you want the panel grid to line up exactly with a particular width, a purpose made metric size version of the L Ribbed Decograin is also available.
L Ribbed Timber Effect Appearance
The L Ribbed profile and Decograin finish work naturally together. The broad horizontal ribs suggest the look of wide timber boards laid across the opening, and the Decograin grain pattern adds the texture and tonal variation you would expect from real wood. In Golden Oak or Dark Oak, the effect is a door that many people will assume is timber until they see the neat rubber seals and flush frame details close up.
Night Oak and Rosewood offer deeper, more formal tones that suit traditional brickwork and darker cladding, while Titan Metallic CH703 within the Decograin range combines the L Ribbed profile with an anthracite metallic appearance for more contemporary architecture. Whatever the choice, the L Ribbed Decograin finish has enough structure and character to hold its own alongside stone, brick or render, making the garage door a positive part of the overall facade.
White Steel Sub Frame and Frame Cover Options
Every LPU42 sectional door is supplied with a factory finished steel fixing frame, which is powder coated white as standard on the visible faces. On many installations the frame legs sit behind the brickwork or reveal and only a narrow edge is visible, which works well with lighter facades and internal reveals. The white frame also gives a clean, neutral edge around the opening where the Decograin door leaf sits back slightly within the frame.
For installations where more of the frame is exposed, or where you prefer the frame colour to match or contrast with the Decograin finish, Hormann offers frame cover profiles in a range of colours and finishes. These slim covers fit over the outer faces of the frame legs and head and can be specified to match the door finish for a continuous timber effect look, or in a complementary solid colour if you want the opening to be picked out against the surrounding wall. This flexibility is particularly useful on retrofit projects where the brickwork or render around the opening has already been decorated.
LPU42 Insulation and Weather Performance
The LPU42 construction is the same across all finishes. The door leaf is made from double skinned steel panels with a polyurethane foam core, giving a panel thickness of 42 mm and a fitted door U value of around 1.3 W per square metre Kelvin when installed correctly. This level of insulation helps to moderate temperature changes inside the garage, which is especially useful where the space is attached to the main house, used for hobbies or contains services such as freezers and utility appliances.
The sectional design opens vertically and then runs back under the ceiling, so there is no door swing out onto the drive and you can park close to the door without restricting its movement. Rubber seals are fitted around all four edges of the door and between sections to help reduce draughts and water ingress. A flexible bottom seal follows minor irregularities in the floor, and the patented plastic frame shoe at the foot of each side track protects this vulnerable area from standing water and corrosion, extending the life of the installation.
Electric Operation ProMatic and SupraMatic
This Decograin LPU42 door is ideally suited to electric operation and many customers choose to include an operator from the outset. The balanced spring system and smooth running tracks mean that a ceiling mounted operator such as the Hormann ProMatic or SupraMatic can move the door with very little effort, making day to day use simple and convenient. With a remote control operator you can open and close the door from the car, from inside the house or from a wall mounted push button, which is especially helpful in poor weather or when arriving home after dark.
The ProMatic operator is a strong and reliable choice for most single and many double standard size doors, offering quiet movement, soft start and soft stop to reduce stress on the mechanism and built in lighting that switches on automatically when the door is used. For larger doors towards the top end of the standard width range, or where you want faster opening speeds, the SupraMatic operator provides higher pulling force and significantly quicker travel, along with additional programming and control features on certain models.
Both operators use the Hormann Bi Secur radio system, a two way encrypted protocol that helps protect against unauthorised copying or interception of the remote signal. Selected Bi Secur hand transmitters can also indicate whether the door is open or closed, even when you cannot see it, which offers extra reassurance. The operator rail includes a mechanical locking device that engages when the door is closed, holding the door leaf firmly against the frame and making it more difficult to force upwards from outside. Together with the insulated steel panels and frame, this provides a secure and convenient solution for most domestic garages.
Reliability, Safety and Warranty Cover
Double tension springs and safety cables are fitted on both sides of the door to control movement and provide protection in the event of a spring failure, helping to prevent the door from falling unexpectedly. When used with a compatible ProMatic or SupraMatic operator, the system monitors forces during operation and will stop and reverse automatically if the door encounters an obstruction when closing, helping to protect people, vehicles and belongings in the opening.
Hormann supports the LPU42 L Ribbed Decograin door with a 10 year warranty on the door and mechanism for normal domestic use, together with separate warranty periods for the Decograin surface and the electric operator components. With good access to spare parts and accessories, and proven design and construction, this door and operator combination offers a long term, low maintenance solution with the appearance of timber and the practicality of a modern insulated sectional door.

In the unlikely event of a warranty claim becoming necessary, please contact the dealer or distributor who originally supplied your garage door. Your dealer should then supply details of the claim, together with a copy of the warranty card provided with the door and proof of purchase to the Product Services Department at Hörmann (UK) Ltd. 4 Description of defect
An assessment of the claim will then be made. This may require Hörmann to inspect the product in-situ. In the event that there is no legitimate warranty claim under the terms specified herein, you may be liable for the costs of the inspection visit. We strongly recommend that you take note of the care and usage instructions displayed on the stickers on the back of your garage door, and on the page opposite, and that you follow these instructions throughout.

User Information/Care
Finish - Steel Doors
The coating process applied to the door and chassis is environmentally friendly. Minor scratches or marks are not covered under the conditions of our warranty and should be repaired immediately to prevent corrosion and deterioration of the panel. Corrosive substances such as acids, alkalines, and salts, etc. should be cleaned from the door immediately; failure to do so will result in deterioration of the finish, which will not be covered under our warranty. Should deterioration of the finish start to occur you will need to repaint your door immediately. Prepare the surface lightly with wet and dry. Then treat with solvent based 2 pack epoxy wash primer and a normal commercial paint (cellulose paint must not be used). Hörmann steel doors are a finished product. They do not require re-painting on site. They are however not immune to damage, which can occur at any stage of the handling of the product from factory to site.
Finish - Timber Doors
Timber panels are coated with a neutralising base-stain. Doors must be stored upright, under cover, with wrapping intact, until wrapping is removed. As soon as the door is unwrapped, one coat of a good quality basecoat primer must be applied to both sides of the door. Immediately after installation, your timber doors require a further two coats of a good quality exterior wood finish on both sides. Initial application and periodic treatment should be carried out strictly in accordance with the woodstain manufacturer's instructions. Failure to follow these instructions will result in early deterioration of the timber panel.
Finish - GRP Doors
GRP door panels should periodically washed down using water. This should be done more frequently if fitted near the sea. Bird droppings will bleach the finish on GRP. and should be removed using water as soon as possible. GRP doors should not be painted over.
Paint Finish - Steel Doors
Minor surface damage can easily be repaired using touch up sprays or sticks without invalidating warranties.
