Hormann LPU42 L Ribbed Silkgrain 17 Colour Options Insulated Sectional Garage Door Standard Sizes
The Hormann LPU42 L Ribbed Silkgrain sectional door combines the bold, wide horizontal ribs of the L profile with a smooth, subtly textured Silkgrain surface that suits modern architecture very well. The result is a clean, crisp door face that looks simple from a distance but has enough surface interest close up to avoid feeling flat or industrial. With 17 standard Silkgrain colours and standard sizes available up to 6000 mm wide and 3000 mm high, this model works on everything from single garages to wider double openings where you want a contemporary, uncluttered appearance.
Standard Sizes The Practical Path
This model is offered in a range of pre set standard sizes based on common United Kingdom and European garage openings. For many single and double garages, a standard size door will sit neatly within the structural opening, giving a smart, well proportioned result without needing made to measure sizing. Choosing a standard size also means the door moves through Hormann production and transport more quickly than a bespoke build, which usually keeps lead times and costs down for the majority of homeowners. Where your opening falls outside the standard brackets, a purpose made version using the same L Ribbed Silkgrain panels can be specified separately.
Silkgrain More Than a Smooth Paint
Silkgrain is Hormann smooth, fine grained painted finish for steel panels. The outer sheet of steel is coated and finished in the factory, giving a silky, almost satin appearance that reads as smooth and refined rather than glossy. The fine grain in the surface catches the light in a gentle way, which makes colours look deeper and more even across the door leaf and helps the finish sit comfortably alongside modern windows and entrance doors.
Compared with a basic smooth paint, the Silkgrain finish is less prone to showing minor surface marks and small everyday scuffs, as the fine texture helps to diffuse reflections. It is a popular choice on contemporary homes because it gives a calm, consistent appearance that supports the overall design rather than drawing attention to the garage door with heavy texture or shine. The finish is factory applied and tested for external use, so it offers long term resistance to weather and is easy to clean with normal mild detergents.
Seventeen Colours for Modern and Traditional Homes
The Silkgrain colour range includes 17 standard options covering most popular external schemes. Traffic White RAL 9016 remains a common choice for a fresh, neutral look, but there are also several mid and dark greys, including anthracite tones that work well with grey windows and cladding, as well as greens, blues and warmer neutral shades for softer schemes. This makes it straightforward to coordinate the garage door with existing or planned finishes on the house.
For projects where an exact match to a specific frame or cladding colour is needed, many additional RAL shades can be ordered at extra cost. This flexibility is particularly useful on new build properties or major refurbishments where the garage door is one of several elements being specified together.
The L Ribbed Profile
The L Ribbed design uses broad, flat horizontal ribs to give the door a strong, linear look. These wide bands create clear shadow lines across the surface and give the door a sense of visual weight and structure, which is often needed on larger double garages where a very plain panel can look featureless. On modern homes with simple wall lines and larger window openings, the L Ribbed pattern reads as a deliberate, architectural choice rather than a generic garage door panel.
The combination of L Ribbed profile and Silkgrain finish works particularly well where the garage door is prominent in the elevation, such as on front facing double garages, courtyard layouts or properties with integral garages near the main entrance. From the street, the wide ribs and smooth surface sit comfortably alongside contemporary materials such as render, composite cladding and aluminium frames.
LPU42 Construction and Reliability
Behind the Silkgrain surface, this door uses the standard LPU42 construction. The panels are double skinned steel with a rigid polyurethane foam core, giving a 42 mm thickness and a fitted door U value of around 1.3 W per square metre Kelvin when installed correctly. This level of insulation helps to reduce heat loss through the garage, which is especially important where it is attached to the house or used regularly as a work or storage space.
The sectional design opens vertically and runs back under the ceiling on tracks, so there is no swing out onto the drive and you can park close to the door without obstructing it. Flexible rubber seals around the head, sides and bottom edge help to reduce draughts, dust and water ingress, while the plastic frame shoe at the base of each side frame protects this vulnerable area from standing water and corrosion. Double tension springs and safety cables are fitted on both sides to control movement and provide protection in the event of a spring fault. The LPU42 L Ribbed Silkgrain door is fully compatible with Hormann ProMatic and SupraMatic electric operators, and the door assembly is backed by a 10 year Hormann warranty for normal domestic use.

Warranty
Hörmann products are manufactured to the highest quality standards and leave our factory only after rigorous quality testing. However, if you should have grounds for complaint, this section tells you what our door warranty offers, and how to go about making your claim.
In the unlikely event of a warranty claim becoming necessary, please contact the dealer or distributor who originally supplied your garage door. Your dealer should then supply details of the claim, together with a copy of the warranty card provided with the door and proof of purchase to the Product Services Department at Hörmann (UK) Ltd. To enable your claim under warranty to be processed as quickly as possible, you should provide the following details:
1 Your name, address and telephone number
2 Original invoice with date of purchase
3 Product description/door type and product number
4 Description of defect
An assessment of the claim will then be made. This may require Hörmann to inspect the product in-situ. In the event that there is no legitimate warranty claim under the terms specified herein, you may be liable for the costs of the inspection visit. We strongly recommend that you take note of the care and usage instructions displayed on the stickers on the back of your garage door, and on the page opposite, and that you follow these instructions throughout.

A separate 5 year warranty is granted on our electric operators. This includes operator mechanics, motor and motor control systems. A 2 year warranty is granted on radio equipment, accessories and system controls. There is no warranty on consumables (e.g. fuses, batteries, bulbs etc.).
By always fitting a Hörmann operator, you are supplying a tried and tested solution, where the operator has been optimally matched to the door, and you can be assured that their Hörmann door and operator combination will provide reliable operation for many years. Therefore, if you fit a non-Hörmann operator on a Hörmann door, the customer's Warranty will not be valid.
User Information/Care
Finish - Steel Doors
The coating process applied to the door and chassis is environmentally friendly. Minor scratches or marks are not covered under the conditions of our warranty and should be repaired immediately to prevent corrosion and deterioration of the panel. Corrosive substances such as acids, alkalines, and salts, etc. should be cleaned from the door immediately; failure to do so will result in deterioration of the finish, which will not be covered under our warranty. Should deterioration of the finish start to occur you will need to repaint your door immediately. Prepare the surface lightly with wet and dry. Then treat with solvent based 2 pack epoxy wash primer and a normal commercial paint (cellulose paint must not be used). Hörmann steel doors are a finished product. They do not require re-painting on site. They are however not immune to damage, which can occur at any stage of the handling of the product from factory to site.
Finish - Timber Doors
Timber panels are coated with a neutralising base-stain. Doors must be stored upright, under cover, with wrapping intact, until wrapping is removed. As soon as the door is unwrapped, one coat of a good quality basecoat primer must be applied to both sides of the door. Immediately after installation, your timber doors require a further two coats of a good quality exterior wood finish on both sides. Initial application and periodic treatment should be carried out strictly in accordance with the woodstain manufacturer's instructions. Failure to follow these instructions will result in early deterioration of the timber panel.
Finish - GRP Doors
GRP door panels should periodically washed down using water. This should be done more frequently if fitted near the sea. Bird droppings will bleach the finish on GRP. and should be removed using water as soon as possible. GRP doors should not be painted over.
Paint Finish - Steel Doors
Minor surface damage can easily be repaired using touch up sprays or sticks without invalidating warranties.
